Recent large-scale power disruptions around the world have highlighted the importance of resilient infrastructure. A common issue, though, is legacy substations and control facilities were never designed to accommodate modern communications equipment or large-scale uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. This challenge was recently faced by ELE Verteilnetz GmbH (EVNG), a German utility responsible for managing electricity and gas distribution networks across multiple municipalities. To meet critical infrastructure requirements, EVNG needed to modernise 21 existing sites and ensure communications and control systems could continue operating independently for up to 72 hours during a major outage. Working alongside Rittal LLC and IT solutions provider Bechtle, EVNG deployed a standardised outdoor infrastructure concept built around climate-controlled outdoor enclosures.
