Physical AI for critical infrastructure: building the real-time control layer for society’s most important systems.

About us

Sand builds the AI operating system for critical infrastructure. Symmetri is the real-time control layer for the systems that power modern society, from water networks and energy grids to telecom infrastructure, healthcare systems, and government operations. As infrastructure becomes more complex, organisations need more than dashboards and analytics. They need systems that continuously model real-world assets and networks, operate in real time, and directly improve outcomes. Sand defines a new category of Physical AI: combining data, scientific models, and operational intelligence to create a unified platform for sensing, analysing, and acting across complex physical systems. Designed for rapid deployment at scale, Symmetri is already operating in 18+ countries across government, water, energy, telecom, and healthcare environments, helping organisations anticipate risk, optimise performance, and make faster, more reliable decisions. Trusted by organisations including Southern Company, Thames Water, Telkomsel, MTN, Severn Trent and others.

We're thrilled to welcome Michael Flaxman to Sand Technologies as our Chief Science Officer. He’s spent his career asking one question: how do you take what the physical world is telling us and turn it into better decisions? It started at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he taught spatial planning and GIS. Then came startups across hydrology, transportation, and telco. The problems changed. The sensors evolved. The question never did. At HEAVY.AI, he helped build a geospatial analytics platform that could render billions of data points in real time, using NVIDIA GPUs and digital twin technology to make complex infrastructure legible in ways that hadn't been possible before. NVIDIA acquired the company last year. We'd been watching Dr. Flaxman for a few years and had already worked with him in telco. His thinking maps closely onto the Sense-Analyze-Act framework we've built, and we see it stretching across healthcare, water, telco, and beyond. We caught up with him recently to talk through what all of this means in practice. Why physical data is a different kind of problem. How we're approaching it. And what it looks like when infrastructure goes from dark to intelligent. Watch the video, let us know what resonates with you. • Critical infrastructure is fundamentally asymmetric. Operators rarely have a complete picture of the systems they manage. We've been working on something to help solve that. Today, we're excited to share a first glimpse of Symmetri. Symmetri continuously builds a living representation of the physical world, bringing together fragmented signals into a shared understanding of how complex systems behave. It helps our clients and partners move beyond monitoring what's happening now to understanding what is likely to happen next, and which actions are most likely to lead to better outcomes. This video offers a first look at the thinking behind Symmetri: why we believe world models matter, and how we're helping governments and enterprises better understand and operate the critical systems society depends on every day. • At Sand, we're applying Physical AI to the infrastructure the world depends on: water, energy, telecoms, the critical systems people only notice when they fail. Our Founder & CEO, Fred Swaniker, sits down to talk about why Sand exists, and what it actually takes to solve problems that matter. If you want to be significant, not just successful, Sand is hiring. Explore our open roles at https://lnkd.in/ejPzbvnF #PhysicalAI #CriticalInfrastructure #SandTechnologies #Hiring #AI

  • American Water Works Association ACE 2026 is a wrap and it was a worthwhile few days in Washington D.C. The energy this year made one thing certain: the water sector is ready for intelligent transformation, and the momentum behind adopting AI solutions is accelerating faster than ever. Between the insightful technical sessions and the packed exhibit hall, it’s clear that leveraging advanced analytics to tackle everything from infrastructure aging to operational resilience is top of mind for forward-thinking utilities. • We are on the ground at American Water Works Association ACE 2026 and the conversations have been exactly what we came for. Utilities are dealing with infrastructure pressure, fragmented data environments, and the challenge of making AI work in conditions that rarely look ideal. Incomplete sensor coverage, legacy systems, inconsistent data quality. This is not the exception, it is what most utilities are actually working with day to day. Come find us at the Innovation Hub Booth 119, A4 Delph Mak, Asong Suh and Jordan Cisco are here through June 24. Reply or DM to book time for a focused conversation. #ACE2026 #AWWA #WaterSector #AI #SmartUtilities #WaterInfrastructure

  • SWAN 2026 is a wrap, and Tampa delivered. One of the standout moments of the week was Niraj Patel, PE Director of Public Utilities at the City of St. Louis, and Ifeanyichukwu Alika, Senior Director of AI Strategy & Solutions at Sand, taking the stage to share how the City of St. Louis Water Division has transformed its water network management in partnership with Sand. By deploying AI-powered digital twins across 1,440 miles of network infrastructure, we slashed anomaly response times from hours to minutes. This not only drove down operational costs and non-revenue water but also delivered the kind of real-world impact that gets the industry talking. That energy carried through to our booth and into the evening at SiX, where a great group of water sector leaders came together for our reception with exactly the kind of honest conversation the industry needs more of. A huge thank you to Niraj Patel, PE and the City of St. Louis for sharing their story on stage. And to Ifeanyichukwu Alika, Asong Suh, Delph Mak, and Susan Herber for representing Sand throughout the week. To everyone who stopped by, joined us at SiX, and made SWAN 2026 what it was: thank you. The water sector is ready to move and we're glad to be part of it. Learn more about how Sand works with water utilities at: https://www.sandtech.com/ #SWAN2026 #SmartWater
