Last week, together with the Centre for a Smart Future, the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance co-hosted an expert roundtable in Colombo on ‘The Return of Industrial Policy: Considerations for Trade, Competitiveness, and Green Growth in Sri Lanka’. We were honoured to have Hon. Chathuranga Abeysinghe, the Deputy Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship, deliver a keynote highlighting the government's determination to develop a coherent industrial policy despite all headwinds. Diana Barrowclough from UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) provided an excellent framing of the changing global landscape of industrial policy and the factors that determine success. And Asanka Wijesinghe provided insights into trade and competitiveness challenges facing Sri Lanka. I highlighted that an industrial policy is only as effective as the financing strategy supporting it and spoke of the role that a new public development bank could play in Sri Lanka in this context. Many thanks to Anushka Wijesinha for initiating and convening this event so eloquently, and for inviting the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance to partner with you.
Industrial policy has re-emerged as a central feature of economic policymaking around the world. For Sri Lanka, the challenge is not simply identifying priority sectors, but developing the institutional capacity, policy coherence, and governance mechanisms needed to support long-term structural transformation. CSF's latest analytical note, builds on discussions from our recent expert roundtable, bringing together perspectives from policymakers, researchers, the private sector, and international experts. It examines the opportunities, trade-offs, and implementation challenges that will shape Sri Lanka's approach to industrial policy in the years ahead. 📖 Read the note here: https://lnkd.in/ggbf2eRE Anushka Wijesinha Ulrich Volz Chathuranga Abeysinghe FCMA CGMA Diana Barrowclough Asanka Wijesinghe SOAS University of London
