Yesterday I went to the SpotHero Celebration Party, and I left with a lot on my mind. Uber acquired SpotHero — probably one of the biggest tech acquisitions Chicago has seen in years. They took over the Adler Planetarium and brought together employees, investors, and friends to celebrate the moment. Mark Lawrence was one of my very first angel investors, and today he's a board member and one of my most important mentors. Eddie Lou introduced us back in 2017. I still remember walking into his office for the first time feeling like I was meeting a celebrity — he was Chicago's startup star, the one who had fought his way out of 100+ parking apps to become the clear #1 in North America. If you drove in a major U.S. city, you were probably his customer. I was nervous that first meeting. But Mark turned out to be warm, funny, and genuine. He decided to invest after that first conversation — simply because he wanted to support a young founder in Chicago, and believed his marketplace experience could help us as we were building our delivery business. And he did. Mark and Eddie taught me, hands-on, how to build a company: how to read the unit economics and other metrics that matter, how to pitch, how to negotiate a term sheet. After every investor meeting, they'd back-channel for the honest feedback and then coach me on how to do better next time. They walked me into the U.S. investing world and taught me how to run a VC-backed company. And every time I ran into a problem, Mark would pick up my call, break down the situation with a calm, clear mind, and guide me to the solution step by step. He's my go-to sounding board for my toughest challenges. Every stage of his journey brought a different challenge — hundreds of competitors early on, the Uber era when everyone questioned whether people would even own cars or need parking, and the pandemic, when revenue dropped 90% and the company had to go through painful rounds of layoffs just to survive. But every single time I saw Mark, he faced it with the same optimism, energy, and sense of humor. I genuinely admire that. After the pandemic, the business didn't just recover — it came back stronger than ever. Last night, he said to someone, "Linxin and I shouldn't have been here today." Only people who've lived through the darkest moments and come back from them really understand how hard-won a night like this is. Fifteen years. He never gave up. And now, this. I couldn't be happier for him. What Mark taught me goes far beyond how to run a company or raise money. The bigger lesson is this: sometimes one generous act toward a young person can change the entire trajectory of their life. To the moon, Mark. 🎉

🌎 #Chicago = the proud home to hometown rockstars like SpotHero led by CEO & Founder Mark Lawrence. 👏 Thank you SpotHero for the invite for their #proChicago celebration as part of their Annual Team Week (ATW)! Five highlights: 1️⃣ Since launching in 2011, #SpotHero has become the industry-leading parking reservation app, with millions of drivers easily finding affordable parking at more than 13,000 garages, lots, and valets across more than 400 cities in the #UnitedStates and Canada. Uber plans to offer a native, in-app parking reservation experience, powered by SpotHero, with a focus on parking for commuters, as well as at events, venues, and airports. Parking operators working with #SpotHero will benefit from access to #Uber’s large consumer base and network of vehicle charging and fleet partners. 2️⃣ In February 2026, Uber acquired SpotHero. #Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said it best: “We’ve built #Uber around giving people more ways to get around without needing a car. But for the moments when people do choose to drive, SpotHero on the Uber app will make the experience easier than ever, and bring more people into the Uber ecosystem." Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/exqtnUNX 3️⃣ #SpotHero CEO Mark Lawrence also said it best: “We’ve spent 15 years building SpotHero into the most trusted, high-performing digital parking network in #NorthAmerica. Joining forces with Uber will allow us to bring that experience to millions more drivers and make parking a natural part of the Uber platform." 4️⃣ We can't say enough of Mark and Team SpotHero, who have continued to be deeply invested in #Chicago's tech and startup ecosystem. Mark himself is an active mentor, investor, and champion for so many of our city's entrepreneurs and innovators. SpotHero, one of 1871's earliest members, is supported by so many local investors and ecosystem leaders. With whatever ask, Mark and his SpotHero colleagues are always a yes: from several World Business Chicago innovation and venture events to international delegations representing our city on the global stage, and more. Just last week, SpotHero was an active partner with Campus 1871 with ThinkChicago by World Business Chicago: making the pitch to young people on why they should launch their careers in the #Chicagoland #tech and #innovation ecosystem. There are so many colleagues and peers who are part of #SpotHero's success, and we're so proud to see such an amazing win for our city. Thank you Mark and team for building and scaling, right here in #Chicago. 5️⃣ Sorry I missed you Kavita Suthar, DEBRA LAWRENCE, MBA, Stephanie Rayyan, Kevin Willer, and #Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs! 📍Adler Planetarium

  • All-Team Week is off to a great start! 🪐✨ The SpotHero team kicked things off with a morning bike ride around Chicago, taking time to get active and connect outside of the office. Then, we spent Tuesday evening at Adler Planetarium, where we had a galactic-ly good time celebrating our successes this year and reflecting on how far we've come. We're looking forward to the rest of the week as we continue to fuel relationships, drive growth, and enjoy the ride together!

Last night I got to witness something special: SpotHero celebrating its acquisition by Uber, surrounded by the people who built it. What struck me most wasn't the milestone itself, as big as it is. It was how they celebrated. Every single person at SpotHero was recognized for their contribution. Not just the leaders. Everyone. That tells you everything about the culture Mark Lawrence and this team have built over 15 years. And Mark did something else I loved. He filled the room with the people who believed first. First check writers. Early investors. Alumni. Advisors. Longtime Friends of SpotHero. Troy, Betsy, Gamson, Willer, Eddie, Adam, Elan, and so many more faces of "Chicago Greats" who have been in SpotHero's corner since day 1. As a former board director, I've had a front row seat to the grit, the pivots, and the sheer persistence it took to get here. Chicago tech wins like this don't happen by accident. They happen because founders build for the long haul and communities show up for them, again and again. Congratulations to Mark and the entire SpotHero team. You earned every bit of this.
