When Shawn Oakland was five years old, all he wanted to do was play baseball. Today, he's helping nearly 1,900 young athletes experience that same joy. As South Suburban's Athletics Coordinator, Shawn has spent the last nine years organizing our youth baseball, softball and flag football leagues. From registration and schedules to coaches, officials and field prep, he's the person working behind the scenes to make game day happen. His favorite part? Watching our youngest players take the field for the first time. "When you get stuck behind a computer, the kids are just names and numbers. But then you actually get outside and see them playing, and you realize why we do it." One thing Shawn never wants to do is turn away a child who wants to play. As our leagues have grown, he's worked hard to expand opportunities so more kids can get in the game. Quick Hits ⚾ 🥎 Favorite position: Pitcher 😂 Funniest recent sports moment: A player was told to run to first base... and just kept running for about 200 feet. ⛳ Favorite South Suburban amenity: Golf, of course! Thanks, Shawn, for helping create memorable seasons for thousands of young athletes and their families.

It takes a bicycle village. Here's to our Bike to Work Day team at Sheridan's station in Wildcat Park on June 24, 2026. South Suburban Parks and Recreation came through with coffee and swag, Lucky Bikes was there with on-the-spot bike tuneups, and our new selfie station was a huge hit along with the free burritos! Thank you to our City of Sheridan staff and our fabulous partners! The 9-1-1 Safety Fun Day was a blast! ☀️ We played games, cheered each other on, and had some fun in the sun. From exploring patrol cars and fire engines to racing across the field in real police and firefighter gear, it was the best way to spend a summer day! 🚓🚒 We even cheered on the LTPD officers as they faced off agaisnt the SMFR firefighters in a relay to determine the best agency – it ended in a tie and ice cream for all 🎉🍦 We're grateful to have such an awesome community come out and join us for some fun, education, and connection! Thanks to South Metro Fire Rescue, Town of Castle Rock PD, and South Suburban Park and Recreation District for joining in on the fun 😁

Lee Gulch’s revitalized channel is taking shape! This stream channel stabilization project at Littleton’s Carbone Park addresses flood mitigation and improved access, including two improved pedestrian crossings and a large vegetation restoration - from wetlands to uplands. The improvements will strengthen aging drainage infrastructure, expand safe trail connectivity, improve park user access, and restore habitat with native plantings. #streamchannelstabilization #ecologicalrestoration #wetlands #infrastructure #connectivity #parks #landscape architecture Mile High Flood District City of Littleton Olsson Naranjo Civil Constructors Western States Reclamation South Suburban Park and Recreation District ERO Resources Corporation

☀️ Employee Spotlight: Jordan Dupuy ☀️ As summer heats up at South Suburban, few people are busier than Day Camp Coordinator Jordan Dupuy! Jordan oversees our five licensed full-day summer camp locations alongside the rest of the Family Services team, helping create memorable experiences for hundreds of campers each year. Since joining South Suburban in January 2024, Jordan has brought a wealth of experience working with children as an elementary school PE teacher, after-school care provider, and nanny. As Jordan puts it, “You name the kid-centric role, and I've probably done it in some capacity!” While campers enjoy the fun of summer, Jordan spends months behind the scenes planning field trips, coordinating schedules, and creating engaging activities. This summer, she's especially excited about introducing new STEM challenges, including designing tin-foil boats and testing how much weight they can hold. Jordan's favorite part of the job is working directly with campers and finding new ways to make each summer even better than the last. A few quick facts about Jordan: 🦋 Most anticipated field trip: Butterfly Pavilion or Denver Museum of Nature & Science 😄 Campers would describe her as loud, goofy, fun, and someone they trust 🌳 Favorite South Suburban amenity: Hudson Gardens and our outdoor spaces (with a special shoutout to ice skating, too!) Thank you, Jordan, for helping make summer camp such a special experience for our community!

🎉 Big news for Cornerstone Park! South Suburban has been awarded a $900,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado - GOCO to help bring our first fully inclusive playground to life. The new 15,000-square-foot playground will create a welcoming space where children of all ages and abilities can play, explore, and connect together. Designed with input from community members and families of children with diverse sensory and physical needs, the nature-themed playground will feature accessible play structures, a multi-user swing, musical elements, quiet spaces, and more. This funding, combined with support from Arapahoe County Open Spaces and a private donor, helps ensure the project can be built to its full vision and serve families across the south metro area for years to come. Construction is expected to begin in October 2026. Follow the project and subscribe for updates on Game Plan https://lnkd.in/gg-yhwdx
