He is the lead author of Teachstone’s CLASS, the most widely used tool for observing teacher-child interactions, and the founding director of the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning at University of Virginia . After four decades on the faculty, he recently moved into emeritus roles. His life’s work points to something both simple and profound. Strong relationships are how young children learn. A good teacher-child relationship works like a steady hand on the back of a bike. The child does the pedaling. The relationship holds them steady long enough to find their balance. We recently celebrated the success of Future Mission Makers, Teachstone's inaugural high school internship program! This experience gave Baltimore-area high school seniors, Isaiah Drake, Jalise Drayton, and Joshua Turner access to the people, teams, and decisions that make our organization run. They each tackled a defined research question within a specific area of focus, rotated through various teams across the organization, and delivered a final presentation to our executive leadership team, C-suite, as well as shared high level findings at our recent All-Hands meeting. We are so proud of what each of these students accomplished and can't wait to see the incredible impact they will make in the future. Thank you, Isaiah, Jalise, and Joshua for showing up, making the most of the experience, and for helping us learn and grow, too.
