Amir's example is a set of headphones: you tell the agent your preference, and it scours the internet for the best price, applies available discounts, and completes the purchase regardless of whether you have any existing relationship with that merchant. That last part is the key unlock, agents acting independently of brand loyalty or an existing account, but it only becomes genuinely useful once this kind of experience is scaled broadly across the internet rather than limited to a handful of partnered retailers. In the live demo linked below Nash Ali, VP of Strategy at Experian, walks through an end-to-end purchase made by an AI agent. A consumer asks an agent to find noise-cancelling headphones from Bose Corporation. Behind the scenes, Experian runs passive fraud checks on the human, Skyfire issues a KYA token that the agent carries as it shops, and Akamai Technologies lets the agent through because it can unpack and verify that token in real time. When money enters the picture, the consumer verifies their identity with a single tap on their phone. Skyfire creates a pay token, the transaction routes through the card network, and Bose calls an Experian trust score before approving checkout. No guesswork about who is behind the agent. I spent an evening at Skyfire’s agentic commerce event at Okta’s headquarters in SF, sitting in on the fireside chat between Nikhil (Nik) Sathe from Blackhawk Network and then talking with @ Nash Ali , Kathleen Peters , and Nate Pegram (Head of Product, Rye) about what “trust” has to mean when agents touch real money. Akamai Technologies’s Brent M. (AI security and strategy) set the baseline: roughly half of the traffic they see is now automated or agentic, some reports closer to 60%, and in peak season one in five sessions can be an agent. All the old “is this a human?” tricks – mouse movement, keystrokes, captchas – stop working as soon as the actor is a bot by design. The panel’s answer to “why hasn’t the agentic economy broken out yet?” was simple: liability and ecosystem coordination haven’t caught up. In e‑commerce, everyone knows who makes things right when an order goes wrong. With agents, nobody has a clean answer yet for who’s on the hook when an agent misbuys or gets frauded. Experian’s piece of the stack came through both on stage and in hallway conversations. Nash Ali and Kathleen Peters walked through KYA tokens binding humans, agents, and cards with low‑friction KYC and a trust score merchants can call when they need more than “this looks fine,” plus the reality that about one in four fraud reports involve a gift card and someone has to own the fix when an agent gets it wrong. Kathleen’s consumer angle was sharper: Experian already has hundreds of millions of people in its bureau and tens of millions of members freezing and unfreezing credit; she wants that same level of control for agents – the ability to freeze/unfreeze agent authorization, see a history of what agents did on your behalf, and catch gaslighting behavior before it becomes normal. Nate Pegram’s demo from Rye filled in the commerce side. Rye's universal checkout and product data APIs stay out of discovery entirely: they take product URLs, run guarded two‑step checkout (first pulling tax and shipping back to the user, then executing the transaction), and let agents operate only on the URLs they’re explicitly given. That matched a theme from the panel: a lot of latent demand is already there - agents are handling deep discovery and referral traffic is shifting off traditional search - but the trust and guardrails around execution are what will decide whether the next shopping season is “agents quietly doing useful work” or “a new attack surface for fraud.” I’m an AI engineer focused on agents, evals, and safety infrastructure, so this is the layer I care about most: human‑bound identity, dynamic fraud signals, and consumer‑level controls like “freeze/unfreeze my agents,” plus a clear “declare, prove, authorize” path for any agent touching production systems. #ai #agents #security #ecommerce #trust #sanfrancisco

At our event last week, The Trust Layer, co-hosted by Okta and Experian, every single demo ended with an agent buying something. So, for our closing panel, we stopped asking *whether* agents can buy - they clearly can and do. Instead, we asked four of the people building the stack what it takes for every merchant to let one. More importantly: when will the dam break and we see millions of agents treated as first class consumers across the web? Kathleen Peters Chief Innovation officer at Experian, Craig Gilbert VP of Identity Solutions at Mastercard, Gareth Davies CPO of Auth0 from Okta, and our CEO Amir Sarhangi, moderated by Danny Fortson of The Sunday Times. Their insights are worth a read and listen for anyone building agents, but struggling with identity and payment. The panel touched on not just the opportunity, but the roadblocks to agentic commerce - while all agreed on the end goal, there was also healthy debate on the finer points of how we get there: - Agent traffic has crossed 57% of what the largest networks see, and most of it isn't fraud. It's pent-up demand. - The real debate: do agents need new protocols, or do they just use the web that already exists? - Why liability still traces back to a human, because there's nothing at stake for an LLM but the next token.
