Unsafe workplace cultures continue to shape who feels safe to participate, stay, and lead within journalism. New research launched today by WAN-IFRA Women in News, BBC Media Action, and City St George’s, University of London examines sexual harassment across media workplaces and the structural barriers that continue to prevent reporting and accountability. The study reinforces that addressing sexual harassment is not only about individual protection. It is about newsroom culture, safety, inclusion, and the future of journalism itself. This week in Nairobi at the Pan-African Media Summit, WIN joined conversations shaping the future of journalism across Africa, from media sustainability and AI to information integrity, safety, and newsroom leadership. Representing WIN, Jane Godia contributed to discussions across the summit, including a powerful session on sexual harassment in newsrooms co-organised by WIN. The session brought together Jane Godia, Queenter Mbori, zubeidah Kananu, and Kenfrey Kiberenge, moderated by Ken Bosire. Across perspectives from journalism, media leadership, and advocacy, the discussion reinforced a shared reality: sexual harassment remains deeply embedded within newsroom cultures, sustained by silence, unequal power dynamics, and limited accountability mechanisms. Speakers reflected on the ways perpetrators are often protected within institutions, while survivors continue to face barriers to reporting and support. The conversation also highlighted the importance of leadership buy-in, stronger safeguarding systems, psychosocial support, and independent reporting pathways to create meaningful and lasting change across the media sector. The discussion also acknowledged the experiences of male journalists, whose cases often remain invisible due to stigma and fear, reinforcing the need for newsroom safety approaches that are comprehensive and survivor-centred. The session concluded with calls for stronger collaboration across the media ecosystem, including legal actors, media councils, HR systems, and newsroom leadership, to move beyond awareness and towards sustained action and accountability. These conversations come ahead of the global launch of the Sexual Harassment in the Media 2025 research findings by WIN, BBC Media Action, and City St George’s, University of London on 21 May.
