This summer, the University of Lagos, Nigeria (Team Antimony) won the second edition of the WIPO IP Moot Court Competition. Selected from 215 teams across 50 countries, eight university teams advanced to the final rounds taking place at WIPO headquarters in Geneva. They argued a fictional dispute between two rival drone companies spanning patent validity and infringement, trademark protection, trade secrets, and cross-border enforcement. In the grand final, the winning team was Israel Idara Ifiok and Kaosisochukwu Andrina Nkpolara, with Ewha Womans University 이화여자대학교, Republic of Korea (Team Ruthenium) as runner-up. Israel Idara Ifiok was also named Best Oralist, and Sultan Qaboos University (Oman) received the Best Memorial Award. Beyond the trophies, participants gain WIPO Academy scholarships and mentorship through the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI). The competition is one of the initiatives advancing WIPO's IP and Youth Empowerment Strategy (IP-YES!). Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who took part 👏 More: https://lnkd.in/dSQmSarP #WIPO #IPMootCourt #IntellectualProperty #IPlaw #MootCourt

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) patenting activity has nearly tripled in two years. Published GenAI patent families – a common measure of new inventions – rose from around 14,000 in 2023 to over 37,800 in 2025. And in 2024-25 alone, GenAI patenting activity exceeded the total for the entire preceding decade. Released today, WIPO's latest Technology SPARK report looks into where GenAI innovation is happening, who is driving it, and which technologies are at its leading edge. Alongside the fastest-growing and leading GenAI invention locations, the report reveals that the race to protect generative AI inventions is increasingly being led by large multinational enterprises operating across diverse industries.
