It’s great to see our very own Dr. Craig Primack on the panel at #EconObesity making the case for digital health's role in transforming obesity treatment. Digital health care platforms hold so much promise for increasing access and support for people needing care for obesity and overweight as well as other everyday health conditions. Craig Primack MD, FACP, FAAP. MFOMA, Dipl. ABOM , head of weight management at hims & hers, met with other experts in Brussels this week to advance discussions on this topic.

A productive few days with my hims & hers colleagues Susan Cadrecha and Pavlo Maherovsky, and with Dr Simon Doyle and Ash Sharma who were representing our newly expanded Eucalyptus team. New research confirms what people living with obesity have known for a long time: the first conversation with your doctor matters enormously. A panel of primary care experts recently published a framework urging physicians to approach obesity through a stigma-free, patient-centered lens, from the very first visit. Their key finding? Weight stigma in the clinical setting is not just harmful to patients emotionally. It actively prevents accurate diagnosis, reduces treatment adherence, and widens the communication gap between doctors and the people they are trying to help. The framework draws on Obesity Canada's 5As of Obesity Management and calls on physicians to: • Ask permission before starting a conversation about weight • Listen without judgment or assumptions • Share decisions with patients, not make them for them • Recognize that weight regain often has nothing to do with willpower At Obesity Matters, this is the care standard we advocate for every day. People living with obesity deserve a doctor who is a partner, not a gatekeeper. When we focus on the measuring tape, do we lose sight of the person? A new white paper from the International Federation of Health Plans reinforces an important message: obesity is a chronic disease, and meaningful care goes beyond short-term solutions. Rethinking the Obesity Challenge highlights the growing recognition that effective obesity care is most successful when it combines medical treatment with behavioural support, nutrition, regular follow-up, and long-term care. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, and lasting health outcomes take time. One message that particularly resonated with us is that even modest weight loss can lead to meaningful improvements in health, especially when people receive the right support. Success isn't defined by reaching a certain number on the scale - it's about improving health, quality of life, and overall well-being. The paper also highlights the impact of weight stigma, which can prevent people from seeking care and accessing the support they need. Creating safe, respectful, and compassionate healthcare environments is an essential part of improving outcomes. At Obesity Matters, we believe people living with obesity deserve access to evidence-based, person-centred care that recognizes the complexity of this chronic disease.
