"Success in the information age was about being able to answer questions. Success in the AI age will be about being able to ask the right questions." — Jonathan Ross, founder of Groq. Jonathan Ross, whose company Groq is reportedly partnering with NVIDIA in a $20 billion deal, shared a profound insight on the latest episode that goes beyond the tech headlines. He explained that in the age of AI, leadership isn't about having all the answers, but about orchestrating intelligence by asking the *right* questions. This shift became deeply personal for Jonathan in his own journey as a founder. He admits he was "one of the world's worst leaders" initially, trying to fit a mold that wasn't his own. His natural instinct was to delegate and give autonomy, but he hadn't yet learned how to hire for it or set the right parameters. This misstep, he estimates, cost Groq "three to four years." His breakthrough came when he realized he had to lead authentically. For a delegator like him, this meant setting "brutally clear priorities" that were simple enough to fit on a challenge coin — like "25,000,000 tokens per second" for everyone at Groq. His key lesson: "The fewer constraints you give someone, the more freedom they have to solve the problem... and the more freedom they have to surprise you with the solution." If you want a truly innovative team, you must create an environment where they can surprise you in a good way, which means not over-constraining the goal. Agentic design tools cross a real threshold when they can reason about why a constraint exists, not just whether a check passes. In silicon that gap is expensive, because the intent behind a floorplan or timing tradeoff rarely lives in the netlist itself.
