Net Zero Tracker Time-Series Data Now Available for Download

This is right, thank you Eliot Whittington and Peter Chalkley ! Let's not "fall into the trap": it may have become increasingly difficult to talk about climate risk, but the structural trends are clear: #geopolitical #instability, #AI and #Climatechange are here to stay and as Eliot and Peter are noting: "If we don't talk about net zero then people who want to argue against the things we're building and creating will. The words are out there - they are part of this conversation. And they have #real, hard #science behind them. You cannot have a stable climate whilst the stock of man-made emissions keeps climbing. The bathtub keeps overflowing until you turn the tap off." When the Chair of the IPCC opens #LCW with remarking that current policy projections are taking us to 2.8 degree of global warming, I do pause. Please research what outlook means in real terms. We need to talk about net zero. I mean that literally. It's not for every audience or occasion and it's rarely an opening, but we need to be able to argue for the goal and use the phrase "net zero". And it's feeling a bit like we're getting too embarrassed to do that? Recent events and discussions has bought home to me that everyone who is working to drive economic transition and climate action is grappling with the challenge that the focus has shifted, our audiences have become less sympathetic and the world has become a more challenging place to talk about climate change. At the same time much of the economic case is stronger than ever before, and many of the underlying issues around sustainability have been firmly mainstreamed. So we can talk about energy security, we can build innovations and grow new industries, we can work to manage risks and build resilience. But it increasingly feels like we don't want to talk about net zero - "the language is off putting" we tell ourselves, "it's too negative". I have to give Peter Chalkley the credit here in pointing this out - but this is a trap. If we don't talk about net zero then people who want to argue against the things we're building and creating will. The words are out there - they are part of this conversation. And they have real, hard science behind them. You cannot have a stable climate whilst the stock of man-made emissions keeps climbing. The bathtub keeps overflowing until you turn the tap off. Now obviously, there are other reasons for action. The world is not simple, and to build the case for action we need to go to where people and organisations are and talk about the best strategies for the future across a range of reasons and using a variety of messages. Some times it will be cost of living, sometimes it will be a safer future, sometimes it will be competitive advantage, and so on and so forth. But we can't ignore the climate or leave it out of our thinking and messaging, and we can't leave it to others to talk about this. We need to talk about, and argue for, net zero.

I couldn't agree more Eliot Whittington. Thank you for this important post. Net zero is an essential, scientific framing for addressing and communicating about climate change.

A few months ago, I argued that net zero is the answer to the wrong question. It is now also the least popular climate term across the G7. I wrote earlier about the moment net zero stopped feeling like the right climate goal to me (https://lnkd.in/esiVdYe2). It was after years spent on climate modeling and decarbonization roadmaps, while people around me were dealing with record floods or through heat domes. That was the strategic argument, and the Potential Energy Coalition just added a rhetorical one. Their recent study for the Rockefeller Foundation, drawing on 83,971 adults across the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Canada, found that "net zero" was the single least popular climate term tested. "Achieving net zero" ranked last among nine environmental priorities in every single country surveyed. Messages emphasizing bans, mandates, disruption, or "net zero" consistently underperformed. Sixty-four percent of people think pollution can be solved, compared to 55 percent who think climate change can. The messages that broaden support focus on health, household costs, energy independence, and protecting families. Our approach to adaptation investing is to look for products people buy because heat, water stress, unreliable power, and pollution are already problems in their day-to-day life. That customers will pay for without needing to be told the abatement target.
