Factory Production Is Growing—The Question Is Whether Capacity Can Keep Up Recent Federal Reserve data shows U.S. manufacturing output was essentially unchanged in June, but looking at the broader picture tells a different story. Factory production expanded at an annualized 4.7% during the second quarter—the strongest quarterly growth in five years. For manufacturers, that's an encouraging signal. Sustained production growth doesn't just increase demand for raw materials. It also puts greater emphasis on machine uptime, process consistency, preventive maintenance, and the ability to scale efficiently as order books grow. Manufacturing output rose 4.7% annualized in Q2. Capacity use still trails. Fed G.17 data (17 Jul 2026): output was flat in June but grew at a 4.7% annual rate for the quarter. Capacity utilization: 75.7%, down 0.1 point in June, 2.5 points below the 1972-2025 average. Output is climbing while existing capacity sits underused. That looks like new lines coming online, not the AI-efficiency story consulting decks favor. Your OEE number says 60%. It won't tell you which loss to fix first. That's the real problem. Most plants track one OEE figure and stop there. The figure is a symptom. A machine running all day doesn't necessarily mean your factory is running efficiently. According to manufacturing benchmarks, world-class manufacturers achieve an OEE of around 85%, while many plants operate between 40% and 60% without realizing where productivity is being lost. The gap isn't always because machines stop. It's because small losses accumulate every shift: • Minor stoppages • Reduced operating speed • Rework and quality losses • Waiting for material or changeovers Individually, they seem insignificant. Friday bit with interesting thot of - Managing Constraints & bottlenecks Every manufacturing plant has a constraint—a machine, process, or department that ultimately sets the pace for the entire facility. Think of it as the "slowest runner in the relay race"—everyone else can sprint, but the team only moves as fast as that one runner. According to the Theory of Constraints (Eliyahu M. Goldratt #Thegoal), improving areas that aren't the bottleneck can sometimes create the illusion of progress. You might see machines producing more parts, operators staying busy, and dashboards looking great. But if the bottleneck can't process the additional output, all you've really done is create a larger WIP warehouse disguised as a production line. The parts are busy, but the customer is still waiting! As manufacturing leaders, our continuous improvement efforts should focus on maximizing throughput at the constraint. Whether it's optimizing NC programs, reducing setup times with quick-change tooling, improving maintenance reliability, or adjusting shift schedules, the goal is simple: keep the bottleneck running efficiently. After all, when the constraint stops, the entire factory suddenly discovers it has a lot of free time. A good rule of thumb: an hour lost at the bottleneck is an hour lost for the whole plant, while an hour saved on a non-bottleneck might just earn you more inventory and fewer places to store it. 👉 What's the primary bottleneck in your facility today, and what are you doing to keep it productive?
