A while back, I posted about how I feel that AI is basically the newest tool in our fabrication belt, just like parametric CAD or 3D printing. I have also been looking at how it works upstream, way before we start designing anything. Coming up with creative new ideas isn't necessarily the hard part. The hard part is making sense of the noise, the mountain of consumer research, trends, trials, claims, and the messy data we get at the start of every project. For years, I've spent a massive amount of time manually wrangling that data into a clear vision that project teams can actually agree on. AI is completely changing this step. It isn't a magic idea generator; it is the ultimate synthesizer. It does the heavy lifting to organize all that raw, conflicting data into actionable parameters, but it still requires a skilled human at the helm. The prompts we use must be thoughtfully directed, deliberate, and well-crafted. AI can structure the noise, but we still have to define the intent. Just like advanced simulation reduced time and risk at the back end of development, AI is speeding up the front end. It is doing exactly what experienced designers have always done, finding the signal in the noise, just a lot faster. It lets us get from abstract research to tangible concepts and design directions in a fraction of the time.
