What untapped data is your company sitting on, and what could you do if you only had better access to it? If you're at all familiar with Protolabs, you probably know about their online quoting and DFM tools. If you've ordered parts through the company, you may have worked directly with one of their engineers to further tweak a design before sending it for manufacturing. Consider that Protolabs has been doing this work and running these tools for years. The company has seen millions of CAD files in its history—that's a huge repository of data that its systems and engineers have only been able to leverage in a limited way. Until now. I spoke with Protolabs chief technology and AI officer Marc Kermisch about the ways the company is incorporating artificial intelligence to improve quoting, speed development and get parts made fast. As a business with more than 2,000 employees, there are AI deployments happening at many levels and for various purposes. But nearly all make use of existing data that was difficult to find, search, access or use before AI. Artificial intelligence can't effectively fill in what isn't there... but it can make untapped wells of information far more usable.
