One year ago, Blauwe Bagger won the BK-Launch Post-Launch Award. We checked in with founder Sil van de Bovenkamp to see what that €20,000 actually became. The short answer: two completed pilot installations, promising partnerships with brick and concrete manufacturers, and a much clearer picture of where their dredging separation technology fits best. The longer answer involves a deliberate choice to bootstrap, a genuine technical puzzle around getting consistent colour from a variable waste stream, and a hard-earned lesson about making decisions without having all the answers. "It almost always works out. That's probably the most important lesson," Sil says, reflecting on a year that involved hiring, relocating and the start of a new funding round, all while still working out the company's longer-term direction. Swipe through for the highlights, and read the full story via the link in the comments. Could this be your story next year? Applications for the BK-Launch Entrepreneurship Awards 2026 are open until 13 September.

Very nice read about BK-Launch award winner Blauwe Bagger. A start-up actively working on turning dredging waste into construction materials!

💠 Entrepreneurship for Everyone workshop today carried a simple but powerful truth - when knowledge is shared openly, more people step forward with confidence. 💠 What I appreciated most was the tone of the room: grounded, generous, focused on capability and the willingness to demystify the path to make entrepreneurship feel accessible, not exclusive. What happens when higher education, entrepreneurship, and regional partners come together? This story is a great example. Through SEED Innovation Hub, a Longwood University senior gained hands-on startup experience while working alongside the team at the Longwood Small Business Development Center (SBDC). As the driving force behind SEED, the SBDC's strategically located advisors helped him develop a business plan and provided the guidance that turns ideas into viable businesses. It's a powerful reminder that investing in entrepreneurship isn't just about supporting today's businesses—it's about building tomorrow's innovators, strengthening regional partnerships, and growing Virginia's economy. One of the most expensive parts of building CloudCradle never reached production. We rejected it. Not because it looked bad. In fact, some of our early samples looked good enough to launch. The stitching looked clean. The colors looked beautiful. The product photographed well. From the outside, nothing seemed wrong. But building for newborns taught me something important : “Good enough” can be a dangerous standard. One of the biggest decisions we made was walking away from components that made manufacturing easier - like zippers, velcro, and other plastic elements. They reduced complexity. They reduced cost. They improved convenience. But they didn’t align with what we wanted CloudCradle to stand for. That decision made production harder. But it made our conviction stronger. I’ve realized something while building this brand : People usually see the final product. They rarely see the dozens of choices, iterations, and rejections behind it. But often, that is where quality is shaped the most. Not just in what you choose to build - But in what you choose not to compromise on. #StartupJourney #BuildingInPublic #Entrepreneurship #ProductDevelopment #CloudCradle

Those of you who work with entrepreneurs--or just follow what's going on in the startup world--must recognize the convergence that occurs periodically around hot ideas (AI this, app that...). My new peer-reviewed article in Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship develops a framework to explain how the evaluative ecology within entrepreneurship ecosystems produces this effect. If we want broader opportunity recognition, to avoid dominant narratives and archetypes that may not be warranted, and to incentivize entrepreneurs to build things that draw on their talents, experience, and community needs then we need to build ecosystems that don't evaluate and legitimize through one-sized fits all criteria. Oh...and shout out to my son who I drug to a conference when he was six the first time I presented a paper on Girard. At least we went fishing afterwards!

Last week, Madeira Geo Tours had the opportunity to take part in the 7th edition of StartNOW's Motivational Talk, joining a panel alongside Power3 Marketing, Flor de Lis, and ZenIA, finalist projects from the previous edition. Based on our experience building Madeira Geo Tours, we shared some of the key lessons we have learned along the way: 🔸 Taking the first step and embracing the unknown is where every entrepreneurial journey begins; 🔸 Managing uncertainty and overcoming challenges requires resilience, persistence and the ability to find solutions every day; 🔸 A clear business model provides the foundation to transform an idea into a structured project; 🔸 A good idea is only the starting point. The market teaches us what needs to be improved and where to focus; 🔸 Learning from experienced entrepreneurs and sharing knowledge can accelerate growth and improve decision-making; 🔸 The market validates ideas. A great product without customers remains only a great idea. Without sales, even the best ideas struggle to survive. A sincere thank you to Startup Madeira for the invitation and for creating a space where experiences, challenges and lessons learned can be shared. To all participants of the 7th edition of startNOW, we wish you every success on your entrepreneurial journey. May this be the beginning of a path filled with learning, perseverance and the achievement of your goals. 📷 Photo credit: StartUp Madeira (2026) #MadeiraGeoTours #Power3Marketing #FlordeLis #Zenia #StartNOW #StartUpMadeira #Entrepreneurship #Innovation #MotivationalTalk #Networking
