Since early 2020 (before you-know-what happened), patient portal message volume is up 153%, according to research from NYU Langone Health. Phone call volume is down 6%. The interesting wrinkle is that in-person visit volume is also up - albeit "just" 17%. This poses a dilemma wrapped inside an enigma and stuffed inside a tote bag filled with other questions about healthcare operations, as I wrote for Digital Health Insights. Namely: What the heck are health systems supposed to do if clinicians are spending more time on visits *and* portal messages? It's not Robot Doctor time, or PA Hiring A-Go-Go time, but it might be time to find some practical and sensible ways to use technology to help clinical teams and admins sort through all the message they're getting - and, when possible and without fear of liability, generate responses as well. Link in the comments, because I'm trying to keep y'all on your toes.
I just heard about this problem from a local community health center here on Cape Cod, but it's even worse because portal messages are up but phone calls are only down a little. So staff is having to deal with more volume than ever, plus visits are up too. I don't believe in Robot Doctor but a solutions is needed!
I realize I could have trolled you and plopped in an image of the protagonist of The Legend of Zelda instead of pasting the actual link. Maybe I'll do that on April 1 if I remember. Maybe I'll tell my son. He forgets NOTHING.
