📚New study summary 📚 Are patient portal messages replacing the waiting room? A new JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association study suggests the exact opposite. According to research that reviewed nearly 8 billion encounters across 2,067 hospitals and 47,100 clinics between 2020 and 2025, digital messaging is booming, but it is acting as an addition to regular medical care, not a substitute. Here are some TL;DR 🔑 key takeaways: - Messaging volume skyrocketed by 153%, jumping from 0.99 messages per patient annually in 2020 to 2.50 by 2025. - Active users are doubling down: Patients who regularly use portals increased their messaging intensity by 146%, hitting 5.4 messages a year. - In-person visits actually grew by 17%, even as digital communication spiked, and telehealth has plummeted from its pandemic peak. - There’s an obvious digital divide: Messaging was significantly higher among adults aged 40-64 (35%) and women (33% vs. 26% for men). Patients in the least socially vulnerable neighborhoods used messaging far more than those in the most vulnerable areas (almost 37% vs. 25%). Remember this 🤞: “This shift has practical implications for staffing, workflow, and reimbursement, as more patient care now occurs asynchronously, often outside traditional visits. Sometimes your friends and family’s ability to explain back to you what you do is the best measure of how clear your messaging is and how well understood your category is. I’m kicking off another video interview series with our service line chiefs. This time I asked them what their friends and family thinks they do for work. Like before, I’m starting this series off with the one and only Saurin N. Patel, MD our Chief of Hospitalist Medicine and Emerging Service Lines. Telemedicine is still a relatively new, unknown and misunderstood category, despite being around for 20+ years. Many hospitals do not yet realize the full extent of its reach or its potential to boost margins and fuel their own growth. Lawmakers may still think of telemedicine as a pandemic-era stopgap which only had a narrow use case. But telemedicine existed a decade before the pandemic, and virtual-first care is quickly becoming the standard across individual hospitals and larger systems alike. That said there is still much work to do before the category is fully recognized and understood. Even for those of us who live and breathe this work, it can be hard to explain succinctly what we actually do, in a way people outside the industry understand. That’s why I wanted to interview our service line chiefs and ask how they explain telemedicine to their colleagues and to their friends and family. Each of them had their own interesting way of describing telemedicine to those who don’t fully understand it yet.
