Rising Input Costs Put Process Efficiency Back in Focus Rising raw-material costs have become the leading concern for manufacturers, according to the National Association of Manufacturers’ latest outlook survey. More than 83% of respondents identified increased material and input costs as a major business challenge—a substantial increase from the previous quarter. For fastener manufacturers, material costs have an immediate effect. When steel and other inputs become more expensive, scrap, tooling performance, process variation, and rejected production all carry a higher price. Manufacturers cannot control every change in the cost of raw materials. They can, however, focus on the amount of value produced from those materials. That places renewed importance on reducing scrap, extending tooling life, maintaining consistent processes, detecting defects earlier, and minimizing avoidable downtime. In a higher-cost environment, incremental improvements across production can have a meaningful effect on margins and competitiveness.
