🔬 Our customer required assistance in the development of a complex, high volume biosensor device that required tight tolerances and fast, very accurate assembly. ADDEV Parafix were heavily involved in the design and development of the biosensor components using laser, plotter and tooled development parts through our R&D Department. Optimum designs and materials were determined, resulting in the production of five components with very specific functions, including a flow cell, made with an inert diagnostic spacer tape, a flow cell lid using a hydrophilic film, a microporous mesh for air flow and barrier to liquid, a component for recognition in vision systems and a PET backing to provide stiffness and enhance aesthetics. We identified suitable materials and developed the biosensor components and assembly process, incorporating our automated assembly equipment for quick and very accurate assembly. Yesterday I wrote about where diagnostics is heading. Today, here’s almost all of it in a single cartridge. This is one reference design from Team HiComp — not a product pitch, but an example of what “everything working together” actually looks like: • Saliva in — no blood, no swab • Sample prep built into the cartridge, not bolted on around it • LAMP isothermal amplification — no thermocycler • Lateral-flow readout — the “old” tool doing exactly what it does best • A visual result in ~30 minutes, at a sub-$10 unit-cost target The point isn’t any single piece. Each of these is well understood on its own. The hard part — and where microfluidics actually earns its keep — is integrating all of them into one cartridge that someone can use at their kitchen table, and that can still be built at cost, at scale. Here's a scientific solution we're proud of. In spray-dried dispersions, particle wall thickness affects how a tablet compacts, holds together, and dissolves. But these walls are so thin they sit at the resolution limit of micro-CT. Standard image processing techniques fail to properly segment these walls due to resolution and contrast limitations, missing critical microstructural information that affects product performance. digiM patented a method that reconstructs those thin walls from the image, reading their shape and curvature to recover a real, measurable number. Published work ties the reconstructed wall thickness to tablet strength, porosity, and dissolution, further proving its effectiveness.
