As many of us sweat in the heat today, remember that heat emergency preparedness can save lives and money. This new brief offers action steps for public health leaders, as well as health systems, employers, and insurers. With climate change and the federal disinvestment in public health infrastructure, now is the time.

Extreme heat is a growing public health threat—and preparedness matters. A new scenario-based brief from the Common Health Coalition, Milbank Memorial Fund, and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health estimates that a five-day heat wave in an archetypal metropolitan area could lead to hundreds of deaths, thousands of emergency department visits and preventable hospitalizations, and hundreds of millions of dollars in medical and broader societal costs. The takeaway is clear: sustained investments in public health preparedness, health care readiness, data systems, and cross-sector planning are essential to protecting communities—especially those most at risk.

I recently had the opportunity to talk with Kiley Trecker and Erin Wilgenbusch, APR about how local public health communicators can help communities make sense of noisy (and fast moving!) national headlines. For me, the key is making sure we share data and stories together—every time. Data helps us understand what's happening. Stories help people understand why it matters. Whether we're talking about measles, cyclospora, cancer prevention, or another emerging health issue, our job isn't just to share information. It's to build trust, provide local context, and help people understand what it means for them and what they can do next.
