Financial Education Program Success Beyond Curriculum

This video is a follow-up to my last video on what exactly the definition of GOOD EDUCATION is. 'Curriculum' is beyond being an educational buzzword. There are serious questions we must ask ourselves if we must determine what/how best to define our educational systems.

Reading Horizons recently launched the Michigan Literacy Impact Grant, designed for a select group of districts implementing Reading Horizons Discovery Suite during the 2026-2027 school year. 📯 Not to toot my own horn (and Natasha Jankowski, Ph.D's), but our book has certainly proven useful and come in handy of late! I was able to draw content/resources from it recently with a colleague looking to lead a curriculum mapping effort (i.e., overhaul) at their institution. They needed language and context to frame the "why" for this work, as well as to know considerations and context to navigate/anticipate in the effort. I was able to draw/point to Chapter 5: More Than Mad Libs: Reframing Learning Outcomes. Another institution was looking for guidance/support in elevating their assessment planning efforts - including method selection - to best position themselves for success come reporting season (not to mention starting off their cycle on the right foot). I readily referenced content from Chapter 6: Establishing a Firm Foundation via Assessment Planning. I just participated in a panel presentation on data storytelling, where I had to do little preparation due to having compiled my thoughts already when I put together Chapter 7: The Art of Analysis and Taking Action. And to prove I'm not just listing chapters in order here, going through some accreditation efforts at my institution and onboarding some new staff, it's been helpful to reference and point to materials in Chapter 11: Combatting a Compliance Mindset. To avoid repetitive cycles, odd processes, and poor operations, carry out a proper review in these areas; ✅️Academic performance: Review students' performance at the end of the term. Look out for lagging students and the areas where they lag. ✅️Administration: Pay attention to the administrative report and fish out struggles that persisted throughout the academic session. ✅️Financial management: Finance is a critical building block of your school. So, look out for money leaks and payment records, and ensure that the records are up to date. ✅️Teaching quality: Examine the quality of teaching in your school and ensure it aligns with the curriculum and broader educational policy. 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐢𝐩: Never assume things are going smoothly; ask teachers questions, and, if possible, send a review form to parents to gather their thoughts so you can run your school better. Test-Optional Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All 📊 Test-optional doesn’t mean test-irrelevant. Some colleges require scores, others don’t, and many sit somewhere in between. The key is that there is no universal rule anymore. If you have a strong SAT or ACT score, it can still strengthen your application. If you don’t, many schools will focus more heavily on your transcript, essays, and activities. But either way, the decision to submit should be intentional—not automatic. Always check each college’s policy directly. Testing strategy now depends on the school, not the system. #SAT #ACT #CollegeApplication

This feels topical as I reflect on the hard earned solid results of our recent DP cohort and send them off to uni. Google forms are great. Marking papers is sometimes necessary but the habit of self and peer assessment gives you and the students a much better life. Students understand; - The system they’re signed up for, - Their own strengths and weaknesses, - Their place within their cohort, - The reasons behind what they are taught. Meanwhile you get more data about individuals. You also create opportunities, time, and the culture necessary for meaningful, honest and insightful conversations. To do anything less is a disservice to these growing young minds. #studentagency
