I’m pleased to see Mars Petcare (a division of Mars) open a new $112.6 million factory in regional Victoria. To me it shows there’s a real future for manufacturing in Australia, as long as you make products people want, at a reasonable price and top quality. The facility will make Whiskas and Dine cat food, employ 67 people directly, and create 100 indirect jobs in the local economy. Whilst the sector has slipped from 25% of GDP in the 1980s to around 6% today, it hasn’t been all bad as the change in composition indicates Australian manufacturing is an evolving scene, Australian industry has moved into advanced and niche manufacturing and still employs around 900,000 people. What matters most to me is that, as the Mars factory shows, manufacturing here still attracts capital investment. So how do we make sure the next one gets built here, too?

Established in Malaysia in 2023, Sustainexus is a Malaysian climate solutions and sustainability development company focused on helping businesses, governments and project partners transition towards a low-carbon and circular economy. We connect environmental assets, technical expertise and commercial opportunities to develop projects that are practical, scalable and commercially relevant. Through this page, we will share more about our work, strategic partnerships, project development activities and the opportunities we are building across Malaysia and the wider region.

Driving large-scale infrastructure change cannot be achieved in isolation; it requires an entirely new level of collaboration. Proud to say that Mars, alongside PepsiCo, Nestlé, Unilever, and others—led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Clean Rivers—are launching a pioneering, systemic project to transform urban waste management across Brazil, starting with the city of Recife. The project aims to unlock up to $50MM in multi-year investment, combining corporate collaboration and philanthropic capital, with work set to begin as early as 2027. It is designed to build a financing mechanism that becomes self-sustaining over time — and to set a new standard for collection and recycling systems across Brazil, including fair compensation for waste pickers and ensuring good working conditions.  The lessons learned are also expected to inform the formulation of national public policies aimed at improving and expanding the collection and recycling system. Meet Alejandra Rueda from NES NATURALEZA, one of our early partners in delivering sustainability projects across Latin America. She played a key role in supporting our smallholder programmes developed in collaboration with Wilmar and later MARIPOSA.   Here are her reflections on the programmes:   “Our partnership was built on a shared belief that sustainability in the palm oil sector goes far beyond compliance. From the beginning, we recognized the importance of strengthening the different links of the value chain through inclusive projects that could create lasting value for small and medium growers, mills, communities, and the industry as a whole. Behind every training session, field assessment, farm visit, and technical discussion, there was a deeper purpose: empowering people, building trust, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities for continuous improvement. Over the years, we have seen farmers adopt better practices, mills strengthen their sustainability performance, and local stakeholders gain confidence in their ability to contribute to a more responsible and resilient industry. For us, sustainability means taking collective action 🌱 Recently, HEINEKEN Vietnam, together with our strategic partner Central Retail Vietnam, the STARS Water Center – Tra Vinh University, and MapMe, successfully implemented the Clean Water for Community initiative. Through the project, rainwater harvesting and filtration systems were installed and handed over to households in Quoi Thien commune, Vinh Long Province, helping strengthen access to clean water in an area increasingly affected by salinity intrusion. Throughout the project, every purchase of Heineken®️ 0.0 products at GO! supermarkets contributed directly to a fund supporting the installation of water filtration systems. Installed ahead of the rainy season, these systems enable households to capture and make better use of rainwater, improving access to safe water for daily use while strengthening resilience against water-related challenges. By bringing together resources, expertise and consumer engagement, the initiative shows how collaboration can create shared value for both communities and businesses. The Green Legacy Project: Growing a Greener Future Together At American & Efird (A&E), responsible business goes beyond what we produce. It is also reflected in the positive impact we create for the communities and the environment where we operate. In celebration of World Environment Day 2026, A&E Indonesia organized The Green Legacy Project in Karangmalang, Mijen, Semarang, in collaboration with the Semarang City Government and the Semarang City Environmental Agency (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Kota Semarang). Bringing together employees, customers, business partners, government representatives, and local communities, the initiative resulted in the planting of 250 trees to help expand green spaces, support biodiversity, and contribute to a healthier environment. The initiative was joined by Angelo Leanage, Regional Managing Director – South Asia, and Sanjay Chandraratna, President Director of PT American and Efird Indonesia, reflecting the importance of collective leadership and collaboration in advancing meaningful sustainability efforts. Through strong partnerships with government, customers, and local communities, we aim to support positive environmental impact that can grow over time.
