Last year, the SV4CASH project helped strengthen flood resilience in Uganda through:    💧 A community vulnerability assessment, which identified flooding as the most significant local hazard.  🎒 Training of around 70 community members in a vulnerable area on flood preparedness, early warning signs, and safety measures.  🗺️ Practical exercises that helped students identify high-risk areas in their community and gain hands-on experience in understanding local flood risks. From data gaps to flood preparedness: How did ROD assess Badakhshan's early warning potential? Seasonal floods caused by snowmelt and heavy rainfall threatened many communities in Badakhshan, Afghanistan. Together with FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance, ROD assessed hydrometeorological stations and evaluated the region's early warning capacity. The assessment combined desk review, expert consultations, field inspections, and time-series analysis of river flow. ● Study area: Shighnan, Tangshew, and Nusai—key hydrometeorological stations in Badakhshan Province. ● Objective: Identify the best monitoring locations and improve flood early warning systems. ● Why does it matter? Five years after the devastating floods of 2021, a new water level monitoring station is now officially live on the VÖLKEL premises in the Morsbach Valley. Developed in cooperation with LANUK NRW, the State Office for Nature, Environment and Climate, the station continuously measures the water level of the Morsbach and transmits the data to a publicly accessible online monitoring system. This gives neighbours, local businesses and everyone living along the Morsbachtalstraße access to current water level information at any time. During periods of heavy rainfall, this data can help people assess changing conditions earlier and make better-informed decisions. No monitoring system can prevent flooding. But reliable and accessible information can improve awareness, support preparation and help reduce risk. Taking responsibility means turning lessons from the past into practical action. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗲, 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 We're proud to share the installation of two new flood preparedness signboards (English and IsiZulu versions) in Quarry Road West Durban, South Africa, developed through the CLARE Programme Research for Impact Opportunities Fund, and linked INACCT Resilience project. More than just a sign, it is a practical community resource that provides clear guidance on what to do before, during and after a flood, based on Quarry Road’s Community Based Flood Early Warning System, initiated in 2014 and further developed through the INACCT project. What makes this signboard especially meaningful is how it came to life. Working hand in hand with local community members, we co-created its content and design to ensure it reflects local knowledge, addresses real needs, and is easy to understand and use. Seeing the community's excitement as the signboard was installed was a powerful reminder that the most effective resilience solutions are those developed with communities, not for them. This signboard is one small but significant step towards strengthening flood preparedness and empowering communities with the knowledge they need to respond confidently when extreme weather events occur. 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼-𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.

Weather is a key driver of Australia’s natural hazards, and the recent Natural Hazards Research Australia (NHRA) forum highlighted bureau research and tools that can be used to improve hazard prediction, mitigation and response. During the forum, bureau researchers delivered presentations on the following topics: • Long-range flood outlook for seasonal preparedness (Dr Christopher Pickett-Heaps) • Case studies of flash flooding using a value chain approach (Dr Carla Mooney) • Integrated predictive capability for extreme rainfall and inundation (Dr Paul Fox-Hughes) • Fire case studies (Dr Mika Peace) The forum was a valuable opportunity to meet with and listen to many of the bureau's key stakeholders, including AFAC, fire agencies, NEMA, state emergency services, national parks management, CSIRO and universities. 📸: Dr Mika Peace presenting research on Fire case studies. Technology can play a powerful role in flood preparedness. Google Flood Hub is a free public tool that provides AI-based flood forecasts, river water trends, and location-specific flood risk information. Tools like this can be very useful for field planning, disaster preparedness, watershed management, and community awareness. In flood situations, timely information can save lives and reduce damage.
