Quantum computing is set to redefine the future of computing, and Israel is investing now to help shape it! The Israel Innovation Authority has launched a NIS 100 million initiative to establish Israel's National Quantum Computing R&D Infrastructure, providing researchers, startups, industry, and academia with access to cutting-edge quantum technologies through a single national platform. By integrating multiple quantum computing technologies under one roof, the infrastructure will accelerate R&D, shorten development cycles, enable real-world testing, and help Israeli companies transform scientific breakthroughs into globally competitive innovations. As Israel's official agency responsible for advancing the nation's innovation ecosystem, the Israel Innovation Authority is building the strategic infrastructure needed to ensure Israel remains at the forefront of one of the world's most transformative technologies. 🚩 QUANTUM COMPUTING FLAGSHIP COMPETITION UPDATE 🚩 Thanks to everyone who applied to QuNorth's flagship competition for first access to Magne, one of the world's most powerful quantum computers. We are impressed by the strength, quality and diversity of applications from researchers, startups and industry teams across the Nordic quantum ecosystem. The competition has now entered the review phase. Together with collaborators from Microsoft and Atom Computing, we will assess and shortlist proposals based on innovation, feasibility, impact and team strength. 🔬 Why Hamburg is becoming an increasingly attractive hub for quantum computing It was an inspiring and hugely promising evening at the Deep Tech Club Hamburg at Capital Square. Jan Henrik Leisse, CEO of eleQtron, shared his perspective on the future of quantum computing and Hamburg’s growing role in the global race for this game-changing technology. Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, Carbon13, Start-Up Labs Hamburg, Life Science Nord, Hamburg Investors Network, Hamburg Invest and Impossible Founders invited Jan Henrik Leisse for a Fireside Chat, and he had plenty of insights to share, along with a clear message for Hamburg’s innovation ecosystem. Founded in 2020 as a spin-out from the University of Siegen, eleQtron made a conscious decision to establish its second location in Hamburg. The reasons are clear: 👉 a strong research landscape 👉 proximity to key industry partners 👉 excellent conditions for developing and building quantum computers Together with experimental physicist Christoph Georges, Ph.D., Leisse provided fascinating insights into the technology behind quantum computing. The discussion explored which approaches to developing qubits could prevail in the long term and why hybrid models may ultimately offer the greatest potential. Another key topic of the evening was what customers and investors are looking for in quantum computing today. Among the most important factors are: 👉 scalability 👉 operational stability 👉 energy efficiency 👉 integration into existing systems While quantum computing is still in the early stages of commercial adoption, eleQtron is already demonstrating the significant economic potential of the technology. D-Wave just got $1.57M from the National Science Foundation (NSF) . Not for building a quantum computer. For helping OTHER researchers use theirs. The National Quantum Virtual Laboratory program is the NSF's way of saying: we don't just want quantum breakthroughs in one lab. We want the infrastructure shared across universities, startups, and industry so the whole country moves faster. That's the real story here. The US government is actively funding the infrastructure layer of quantum computing. Not just the hardware. The access. The tools. The workforce. At APEXAREO we’ve been building toward exactly this kind of moment. Room-temperature quantum infrastructure that doesn’t need a $20M refrigeration setup to run. patents pending. The whole thesis is: make quantum computing something more labs and more companies can actually touch. Grants like this prove the government sees the same gap we do. He later led Google’s quantum-hardware team and played a key role in its landmark #quantumsupremacy experiment. Today, he is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Qolab, where he is working on scalable quantum computers. Martinis came to Jülich to give a keynote at the Peter Grünberg Institut (PGI)annual #PGIDay after a visit to Croatia, where he was honoured by the president for his scientific achievements and Croatian heritage. In Jülich, he also met long-time collaborators Rami Barends, Frank Wilhelm-Mauch, and Mohammad Ansari. Series: Tech Analysis Today’s Topic: Quantum computing Europe talks about quantum computing as the next big industrial advantage. The reality is more complex. The region has real strengths: strong research universities, active public funding, and a growing ecosystem in countries like Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK, and Spain. Europe is also pushing hard on quantum software, sensing, communications, and hardware research. But the engineering and business challenges are still huge. Quantum machines remain difficult to scale, error correction is not solved at commercial level, and many use cases are still experimental. For most companies, the near-term value is in research partnerships, pilot projects, and quantum-safe security planning, not immediate disruption. Europe’s advantage may be patience and coordination, not speed.
