Marketing Isn't the Problem, Your Process Is

I thought I was walking into a marketing problem. I wasn't. A business owner recently reached out because they were convinced they had a marketing issue. The website wasn't producing enough business. The messaging needed work. Maybe they needed SEO? Maybe more ads? So we started digging. What we found had very little to do with marketing. The website was generating leads. People were filling out the contact form. Could we help them improve, absolutely, but marketing had done exactly what it was supposed to do. The problem started after that. Every inquiry was called twice. If there was no answer, the lead simply sat there. No email. No text. No follow-up sequence. No task assigned. No reminder to reconnect. No person to check on them later. Just... silence. Some of those people undoubtedly hired someone else—not because the company wasn't qualified, but because another business showed up when they needed them. This is why I spend so much time talking about strategy instead of tactics. Marketing doesn't exist in a vacuum. Your website, CRM, automations, sales process, customer experience, reporting, and leadership all influence whether marketing actually produces revenue. It's a little like blaming your GPS because you never reached your destination, only to discover your car ran out of gas halfway there. As a fractional CMO, this is often where I add the most value. I'm not just asking, "How do we generate more leads?" I'm asking: What happens after someone raises their hand? Where does the process break down? What systems are creating friction? What small operational change could dramatically improve results without spending another dollar on advertising? Sometimes the biggest opportunity isn't getting more traffic. It's making sure you don't lose the people who have already found you. Strategy has a funny way of revealing that the problem you thought you had isn't always the one holding you back. #FractionalCMO #MarketingStrategy #BusinessStrategy #LeadGeneration #CustomerExperience #SalesProcess #GrowthStrategy #Leadership #SmallBusiness #Marketing

Excellent diagnosis Dr. Katherine Spradley Many companies try to solve a revenue problem by buying more traffic, when the real leak is in follow-up, ownership, and process discipline. Fixing the journey after a lead raises their hand can often create more growth than another campaign ever will.

Well said. Thanks for sharing your valuable insights.
