Part 1) The Core Axiom: Where Assets Actually Exist A common misconception is that digital assets are "stored" inside a wallet or on a device. In the actual plumbing of a blockchain, this is mathematically impossible. The Ledger Reality: All digital tokens, smart contracts, and transaction histories exist exclusively on the decentralized blockchain network. The Wallet Function: A digital wallet is not a container for assets; it is a key management and transaction-signing tool. It holds the mathematical proofs required to move data from one address to another on the public ledger. Every address on a blockchain consists of a public-private key pair generated by cryptographic algorithms. The public key acts like a routing number—an open identifier where other entities can direct transactions. The private key is a unique mathematical string that functions as an absolute cryptographic signature, verifying the authority to execute and broadcast transactions. The real question for any blockchain entering the quantum era is whether it can change its cryptographic primitives without disruptive protocol upgrades. The existing approach for most chains is to pick one post-quantum scheme and bake it into the protocol. This only works until the algorithm gets weakened or superseded and the migration cycle must starts over. CKB takes a different path. The framework below applies four questions to any chain, and shows how CKB answers each one.
