We were so pleased to host Tomás Aragón (托马斯·阿拉贡) at the University of San Francisco. Sincere thanks to Dr Aragón for his time and thoughtful reflections on Leading Public Health in Turbulent Times! This special lecture and interactive Q&A session was hosted by Master of Public Health (MPH) students as part of a new subject I designed and delivered: Navigating Crisis and Uncertainty in Public Health. Over the last 8 weeks, we covered: ⁉️ Understanding uncertainty and the "wicked problems" of public health. ⚖️ Public health decision-making when information is incomplete, contested, and changing. 📣 Persuasive communication and influence during crisis and uncertainty. 🤝 The importance of building networks and trusted partnerships with collaborators and communities before a crisis. 💪 Building your character and becoming a trusted leader. The subject was shaped by my own experience in public health practice over many years; while also drawing on ideas and lessons from Rob Moodie (on public health leadership), Adam Kahane (on "collaborating with the enemy"), and Cade Massey / Michael Useem (on persuasive leadership development at Wharton Executive Education).

Today at NACCHO360, the National Commission on Local Public Health Leadership released its roadmap to empower local health departments and elected officials to shore up public health in their communities. "Good Health is Good Governance: A Toolkit for Strengthening Partnerships Between Elected Officials and Public Health Leaders" equips elected officials and local public health leaders with practical, nonpartisan ways to strengthen collaboration, enabling scientific evidence to be translated into effective policy and community action. Good public health research starts by listening. Lived experience is sometimes described as anecdotal or secondary to quantitative evidence. I think that misses the point. Statistics help us understand patterns. Lived experience helps us understand context. When these different forms of evidence are brought together thoughtfully, research becomes more relevant, interventions become more practical and prevention becomes more equitable. I’ve written a new article exploring why lived experience should be viewed as an essential component of evidence-informed public health rather than an optional addition.
