To build healthier communities and better respond to public health needs, county officials and public health leaders must work together before crisis hits, panelists said Saturday at a public health summit during #NACoAC26. The National Commission on Local Public Health Leadership, which was formed last year to help identify gaps in relationships between policy, policymakers and public health, recently launched a “Good Health is Good Governance” toolkit to support building partnerships in the public health field. Athens County, Ohio, Commissioner Lenny Eliason and Loudoun County, Va., Chair Phyllis Randall are both members of the public health commission and helped inform the toolkit. They spoke to conference attendees about the new resource during Saturday's summit. Read more from NACo's County News: https://bit.ly/4fr85uN

"Public health is really pretty boring until it isn't." When outbreaks are prevented or contained quickly, it's often because public health systems are doing exactly what they're designed to do. Watch IDSA CEO Jeanne Marrazzo, MD, MPH, FIDSA, explain why sustained investment in public health is essential to protecting our communities. https://bit.ly/4yHqZ8e

Advancing local policies that promote and protect public health is more important than ever given challenges at the federal level. In this brief, we elevate lessons from CityHealth about what it takes to advance city-level policies in the largest cities across Kaiser Permanente's footprint.
When facing barriers at the state and federal levels, cities can advance evidence-based policies to promote and protect public health for their residents. CCHE’s evaluation of CityHealth, an initiative of the de Beaumont Foundation and Kaiser Permanente (KP), shares lessons about the implementation and impact of evidence-based policies that promote public health in 23 cities located in the KP footprint. Public Health Champions, NACCHO launched its Public Health is Local initiative to encourage members to meet with legislators in-state and in-district during August recess. August recess is a great opportunity to educate legislators on the ways federal decisions can impact local public health services in the communities that they represent! As part of this initiative, NACCHO developed a step-by-step guide (https://lnkd.in/eF4TjV4C) to scheduling educational meetings with your Members of Congress and a handout to leave behind after the meeting (https://lnkd.in/eTQ8S8Mq). If you can't meet with your legislators next month, there are other ways to connect with them. Throughout August, you'll have the opportunity to take action on key decision points: -Funding for Fiscal Year 2027 - Encourage Congress to sustain responsible funding levels for federal health agencies. (https://lnkd.in/e_fWMRap) -Reauthorization of Public Health Workforce Loan Repayment Program - Urge Congress to support the public health workforce and ensure local health departments can hire and retain qualified staff. (https://lnkd.in/eRfPYSgJ) -Withdraw the Proposed OMB Grant Review Rule - Ask Congress to request that OMB withdraw the Federal Financial Assistance rule which would make drastic changes to federal grants (https://lnkd.in/egwMfhKp)
🚨 Public Health is Local—and local voices matter. 🚨 Local health departments are on the front lines of protecting and improving the health of our communities, but the decisions that shape public health funding and policy are often made in Washington. That’s why NACCHO launched the Public Health is Local Initiative—to empower local public health leaders to share their expertise, build relationships, and educate Congress on the important role of local health departments during August recess. If you can't engage with your lawmakers in person during August, you can join NACCHO's Congressional Action Network (CAN). By joining CAN, you’ll receive opportunities to engage directly with Congress and help ensure policymakers understand the critical role local public health plays in protecting and improving community health. 📢 Ready to make your voice heard? Find the Public Health is Local resources on our website and join the Congressional Action Network today to be part of a growing movement at https://ow.ly/LaP250ZutWK
