On 6 July 2026, DOS and CANADEM signed a Memorandum of Agreement to provide specialized expertise in support of the United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH) as it establishes its operational footprint. Through this agreement, CANADEM will provide specialized gratis personnel in water and sanitation engineering and environmental management. This expertise will be critical to embedding environmental safeguards, strengthening public health protection and supporting sustainable infrastructure practices from the outset. DOS also welcomed Ambassador Michael Gort, Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations, as an observer to this milestone event, recognizing CANADEM’s longstanding partnership and its early roots with the Government of Canada, as well as Canada’s continued support to international efforts in Haiti. For DOS, the establishment of UNSOH represents an important milestone in the efforts of the United Nations to deliver agile, responsive and effective operational support in challenging environments. It also reflects our continued commitment to ensuring that UN operations do no harm, raise our environmental ambition and leave a positive legacy for the communities we serve. 🌍 It has been an absolute pleasure working on this programme over the last two and a half years. At both PwC and Mott MacDonald, I have had the chance to work with and learn from some truly fantastic colleagues - far too many to name. It has given me exposure to such a wide range of projects from establishing a provincial Programme Management Office in Gauteng, South Africa, to supporting an AI pilot on Ukraine's country wide reconstruction platform DREAM. It has also left me with a clear view: at a time when funding is so constrained and the political headwinds strongs, the UK can and should still seek to play an influential role as a convenor, drawing on our world class expertise. Over the past three years, GCIEP has helped over 35 countries and 55 cities improve their infrastructure, their energy systems and their urban spaces. Among many other results, the programme has helped to mobilise £988 million in infrastructure financing and has contributed to more than 33 adopted policy or regulatory changes, with another 80 currently under consideration. GCIEP is now entering a new phase and work will continue in Indonesia, Jordan and Ukraine, while there will be no further centrally funded programme activity. What matters now is carrying forward the programme's valuable learning. Lessons from GCIEP are already being applied to the design of a new UK Community of Expertise on Accelerating Climate Transitions, with a focus on helping countries adapt infrastructure to the realities of climate change. NAMIBIA URGES STRONGER WATER COOPERATION - nbc: Namibia has called for stronger cooperation between countries sharing rivers and water resources, warning that transboundary water management is falling behind and could undermine progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Speaking on behalf of the Transboundary Water Cooperation Coalition at the UN High-Level Political Forum, Namibia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Penda Naanda, said cooperation is key to ensuring water security, peace and sustainable development. "Transboundary water cooperation is among the most off-track dimensions of SDG 6, yet it determines the success of the entire 2030 Agenda. Transboundary basins span 153 countries and host 40% of the world's population. Yet, only 43 states have operational arrangements covering most of their shared waters. Climate impacts do not respect borders, and only 14% of transboundary basins have joint adaptation strategies. Cooperation secures water, stability, peace and prosperity for all." Naanda urged countries to strengthen legal frameworks and joint water management institutions, saying greater cooperation would unlock investment, improve climate resilience and support the sustainable management of shared water resources. https://lnkd.in/dsV89WvV

#Kazakhstan and #Japan just took a concrete step forward on carbon cooperation. Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mansur Oshurbayev met with representatives of Marubeni Corporation to discuss expanding joint projects under #Article6 of the #ParisAgreement and advancing the Joint Crediting Mechanism (#JCM) between the two countries. The timing matters. On July 8, 2026, the President signed amendments to Kazakhstan's environmental legislation, establishing the legal framework needed to implement emission reduction and carbon removal projects under Articles 6.2 and 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. Very grateful to have been part of 'Crossroads of Crisis: Conflict, Climate, and the Environment in the MENA Region', organized by the Arab Reform Initiative and the Robert Bosch Stiftung in Istanbul. It was a rich two days of discussion, bringing together perspectives that do not always meet in the same room: environmental expertise, policy, law, journalism, civil society, and field experience from across the #MENA region and beyond. The panels touched on many urgent issues, from conflict-related environmental harm and climate vulnerability to food and water insecurity, documentation, accountability, and recovery. I was glad to contribute to one of these conversations, and even more glad to learn from the others. Many thanks to the organizers, fellow speakers, and participants for such a thoughtful and generous exchange. The group photo says a lot about the spirit of the event. Two days. Seven panels. Voices from across the #MENA region and beyond and a conversation that was long overdue. Last week, the Arab Reform Initiative and the Robert Bosch Stiftung brought together researchers, legal practitioners, environmental experts, policymakers, civil society representatives, and journalists in Istanbul for Crossroads of Crisis: Conflict, Climate, and the Environment in the MENA Region. Nearly 140 people gathered with us in Istanbul over two days, and the conversation extended far beyond the conference room Across both days, more than 300 viewers attend online via Zoom and a further 780 viewers followed the sessions live on Facebook. Participants submitted over 70 questions through Zoom alone, a testament to the depth of engagement the sessions generated. The programme covered ground that rarely finds a single forum: the emerging legal concept of ecocide, the environmental legacies of conflict in #Syria and #Iraq, transboundary water dynamics, the cascading consequences of the Strait of #Hormuz crisis on food and energy systems, the use of #GIS technology to document war-induced environmental destruction, the human cost borne by farmers and agricultural workers, and lessons from Africa and Latin America on accountability and recovery. A sincere thank you to every speaker who brought their expertise, their field experience, and their candour to these panels. To the technical and logistics teams in Istanbul, your work made this possible. We are pleased to have joined CISCOT: Civil Society Coalition on Transport in Uganda and key stakeholders this week at the Uganda National Round Table held at Hotel Africana this week under theme; “Balancing Urban Growth with Environmental Justice, Understanding Wetland Evictions by NEMA" Key insights from the dialogue highlighted progress by National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) in wetland restoration, alongside persistent challenges including population pressure, compensation concerns, and enforcement complexities. As NEMA continues inter-coordination on green infrastructure and environmental conservation, there is need for stronger land-use planning, real-time environmental monitoring, and community empowerment. Representing CoST Uganda Africa Freedom of Information Centre, Jolly V. underscored that transparency is central to sustainable infrastructure systems. Public access to infrastructure data—such as Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), climate finance information, and Environmental-Social-Health (ESHS) safeguards remains critical for accountability and early risk detection in wetland conservation and infrastructure development. Our new practice paper, ‘The peacebuilding promise of environmental management,’ is now available. Drawing on programming experience across East and Central Africa, the Horn of Africa, West Africa, South Asia and the Pacific, it examines how and under what conditions managing environmental issues can support conflict transformation. This paper explores cross-cutting lessons that emerge from the work, including: • Intentional design is essential • Environmental interventions need to engage with underlying power dynamics rather than remain purely technical • Holistic approaches spanning multiple levels of engagement produce more lasting outcomes The paper also sets out recommendations for donors and policymakers on how to support an enabling environment for both environmental and peacebuilding outcomes. An important partnership and a timely reminder that effective UN operations depend not only on mandates and political decisions, but also on specialized technical expertise and the practical support of Member States.
