The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2026 offers a clear message: progress is happening—but not fast enough. Since 2015, billions have gained access to clean water, electricity, health services and digital connectivity. Yet global challenges—conflict, climate pressures, debt and declining development assistance—are slowing momentum. This week at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development  (#HLPF2026), countries are reviewing progress on: - Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation - Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy - Goal 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure - Goal 11: Sustainable cities - Goal 17: Partnerships The focus is practical: how stronger partnerships, financing, technology and data can accelerate results across all sectors. With less than five years to 2030, decisions made now will shape outcomes for decades.

Strategy? If we blow each other up, we don't have to worry about the climate anymore. Besides, it's profitable.

There will be no sustainable transition without systemic changes... While Europe is going through a massive heatwave, the French government just dissolved a research project on climate change adaptation despite the warning issued in January in Le Monde, in an op-ed signed by more than a thousand people (scientists, elected officials, former ministers, architects, urban planners, and geographers). While budgets for the sustainable transition are being cut. Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, announced 10s of billions of dollars of contracts for military equipment in all segments. As per the words of a consultant I was discussing with, the sustainable movement is in limbo. Only a third of the sustainable development goals see progress, half of them are moving far too slowly, and 18% are regressing, including climate, biodiversity, land degradation, peace, justice, hunger and inequalities. In movements supporting the transition, the exhaustion is psychological, financial and structural. Pressure from industrial lobbies, inflation, instability, economic growth and competitiveness at all costs have led governments to reduce both their engagements and their support of the transition. We are facing a reality check. The polycrisis that we are dealing with will not be resolved with the mindset, patterns, and economic system that created it: consumerism, individualism, competition, addiction to growth, geopolitical rivalries. To make things worse, existing alternatives have been made invisible by mainstream and social media, pushing content designed to grab attention. At the same time, the public debate remained focused on symptom treatments. When a system cannot bend, it breaks. Yet, we should not despair. Inability to proceed with a vitally needed transition means the cracks in the systems will widen. It is through those cracks that the much-needed change can be infused. The role of those working for a sustainable future can't just be to beg the current system to change its nature. It's to prepare the structures, the alternative economic models, and the local resilience networks that will be needed to fill the void as those cracks widen. The situation calls for us to be up to the challenges of our times – our future depends on it. Let’s continue acting to pave the way toward a desirable and sustainable future – together

The clean transition must be our new mantra 🌱 One word has come to dominate Europe’s public discourse: competitiveness. It is on every leader’s lips, in the media, and across opinion polls. Too often, it has been treated as separate from, or even in tension with, the European Green Deal. A new JRC study shows the opposite: delivering on the clean transition is not just vital for the planet, but can also boost… guess what? Competitiveness!   This is a systemic challenge. The transition means: 🌍 Stepping up climate action ⚡ Building climate-neutral energy systems ♻️ Advancing a circular economy 🚆 Developing sustainable mobility 🌾 Strengthening resilient food systems 🌿 Preserving and restoring nature 🏭 Reducing pollution   JRC researchers identify the key enablers needed to make this happen, demonstrating that the transition is not a trade-off between sustainability and competitiveness. If done right, it can be a foundation for both.   The report is a strong example of the JRC’s role in supporting EU policymaking through collaborative science. At 250 pages, it is quite comprehensive... but fret not, an essential brief is also available for those looking for the key takeaways.
