A new step for energy storage in Italy and Europe. Eni Storage Systems – jointly owned by Eni Industrial Evolution and FIB, part of SERI Industrial Spa – has begun construction work at the Brindisi industrial site for a new integrated hub dedicated to the production of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. The project will support the development of Battery Energy Storage Systems, solutions designed to store renewable energy when production exceeds demand and release it when needed, helping to strengthen grid stability and overcome the intermittency of renewables. The development of our future Eni Storage Systems Gigafactory in Brindisi represents a major milestone in our industrial evolution. More importantly, it marks our entry into a sector that is absolutely critical to global decarbonisation: stationary batteries for renewable energy storage and grid stability. Today’s laying of the first stone marks the beginning of construction at the Brindisi site. Developed through a valuable partnership with SERI Industrial Spa, which includes Eni’s entry into FAENIX, this project aims to enhance Italian industrial know-how, leverage existing assets, and boost overall competitiveness. It represents a tangible step into a new business with high growth potential, driven by investments in innovation, skills, and a new local supply chain. By integrating renewable energy development with grid resilience, we are creating opportunities and strengthening strategic autonomy from non-EU markets. The H2 Hollandia project in the Netherlands has produced its first green hydrogen using a 5 MW electrolyser, marking a significant milestone in the development of a renewable hydrogen facility designed to reduce solar energy curtailment and support regional hydrogen supply. The first production run generated approximately 25 kilograms of green hydrogen using a Plug Power electrolyser installed at the 115 MW Vloeivelden Hollandia solar park in the province of Drenthe. Developed by Dutch renewable energy company Novar, the H2 Hollandia project integrates hydrogen production with a large-scale solar park to utilise excess renewable electricity that would otherwise be curtailed. Installation of the electrolyser began in November last year, with Novar estimating that the project could reduce energy curtailment at the solar facility by up to 50% once fully operational. Work is continuing on the remaining infrastructure, including hydrogen compression and filling systems required for commercial operations. Once completed, the facility is expected to produce approximately 300 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The hydrogen will be loaded into tube trailers and transported to refuelling stations and industrial customers across the region. Novar has secured more than €12 million in funding from the Dutch national government, alongside an additional €1 million grant from the provincial government to support the project. For green hydrogen, in addition to reiterating the 2 million ton production target by 2030, the document shows some crucial shifts in policy positioning: green hydrogen is no longer treated primarily as a pilot industry or a means of renewable energy integration, but as a key pathway for the utilization of renewable energy and an integral part of China’s broader renewable energy and energy transition strategy. Specifically, the policy document provides goals for the 4 aspects of developments of green hydrogen-production, storage and transportation, utilization, and technology innovation.
