Here is a number that should make every packaging operations leader uncomfortable: 88% of snack food manufacturers alone are expected to purchase new labeling and coding machinery before 2027. And snack food is just one category.

The reason? By December 31, 2027, every major retailer in North America will require their POS systems to scan 2D barcodes—QR codes and GS1 DataMatrix—at checkout. That is the GS1 Sunrise 2027 mandate. It is not a government regulation. It is something potentially more consequential: a retailer-enforced requirement backed by Walmart, Target, Kroger, and Dillard’s.

And yet, walk into most mid-size CPG packaging lines today, and you will find the same continuous inkjet coders and label applicators that were specced for 1D linear barcodes five or ten years ago. They print lot codes, expiration dates, and the occasional UPC just fine. They are not built to produce the high-resolution, high-contrast 2D codes that retail will demand in 18 months.

The Technical Gap Nobody Is Talking About

The conversation around GS1 Sunrise 2027 has mostly focused on the what—new barcode formats, digital link URLs, data capacity. That is the strategic layer. Important, but incomplete.

The operational reality is more immediate and less glamorous: can your packaging line physically print a scannable 2D code at production speed?

2D barcodes are fundamentally different from 1D codes. A traditional UPC is a series of thick and thin lines. Forgiving to print. Easy to scan even with moderate print quality. A QR code or DataMatrix is a dense grid of tiny dots where every single module must be precisely placed, with sharp contrast and clean edges. Miss a few dots, and the code fails at the register.

That requires:

  • Higher print resolution—most 2D codes need a minimum of 300 DPI for reliable scanning, well above what many legacy CIJ coders deliver on corrugated or film substrates
  • Consistent contrast—ink adhesion, drying time, and substrate compatibility all affect whether a 2D code will scan reliably across thousands of units per hour
  • Precise dot placement—thermal inkjet (TIJ), piezo inkjet (PIJ), and laser marking technologies are best suited for 2D production; older continuous inkjet systems often cannot achieve the required fidelity

If your coders were purchased to print lot codes and date stamps on secondary packaging, they were almost certainly not evaluated for 2D barcode output. That gap is not going to fix itself.

Why Q4 2026 Is Already Too Late

Equipment lead times for packaging line machinery are not what they were pre-pandemic. If you need a new thermal inkjet coder, a label applicator upgrade, or integration work to tie a new printer into your existing line—you are looking at weeks to months of lead time, plus installation, calibration, and verification testing.

Now multiply that by every line in your facility that prints variable data. Now add the artwork and spec changes required to accommodate 2D codes alongside your existing 1D UPC. Now factor in the retailer submission timelines for updated packaging.

Brands that wait until Q4 2026 to start this process will be competing for equipment, integration capacity, and supplier attention with every other company that procrastinated. The pricing will be higher. The timelines will be longer. And the margin for error will be zero.

  • For each one, determine: can it produce a GS1-compliant 2D code (QR or DataMatrix) at your current production speed, on your current substrates, at 300+ DPI?
  • Identify which lines need equipment upgrades, which need recalibration, and which are already capable
  • Map that against your retailer compliance timelines—not just the 2027 deadline, but any earlier pilot requirements from your top accounts

That audit gives you a clear picture of the investment needed and the timeline to get there. Without it, you are guessing.
