🇺🇸 As America enters it's 250th year as a nation, we’re spotlighting  the strengths of American manufacturing on Brooklyn’s working industrial waterfront in Sunset Park. Brooklyn Army Terminal is Sunset Park’s flagship site with rich history, playing a critical role in the city’s industrial ecosystem, providing 4.3 million square feet of space for manufacturing businesses in sectors such as food, fashion, and advanced manufacturing, and being a home to more than 100 businesses and employing 3,500 New Yorkers. Keeping manufacturing local is critical to creating quality jobs, building resilient supply chains, and continuing the rich industrial legacy of neighborhoods like Sunset Park. The benefits of investing in local manufacturing strengthens regional economies and industries. Derecktor Shipyards, located on the Long Island Sound, is one example of how local manufacturers and skilled trades work together to keep America's working waterfront thriving. To date, the Brooklyn Army Terminal has hosted a number of pilot projects for emerging climate tech startups through the Pilots at BAT program. Participating startups have successfully completed their pilots, exiting the program with valuable market insights, real customer feedback, and data-driven results, leading to opportunities such as unlocking local and state incentives, securing new funding and prototype development. Popwheels, a Brooklyn based startup which completed a pilot project in 2025, offers a safe e-bike battery-swapping solution for delivery workers, helping reduce the risk of battery-related fires in New York City. Through the Pilot’s at BAT program, Popwheels set up a battery-swapping cabinet at the Brooklyn Army Terminal for delivery workers and e-bike users in the surrounding neighborhood to swap depleted e-bike batteries for charged ones. Following their pilot completion, Popwheels announced a partnership with Uber to open the first public battery-swapping hub in the United States at Hudson Square in NYC. As they expand, Popwheels is making an impact on battery infrastructure for delivery workers across the nation. This month we met with the Sunset Park Economic Mobility Network (SPEMN) led by Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation in partnership with Brooklyn Workforce Innovations and Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow. SPEMN is a coalition of trusted and experienced local workforce and service providers seeking to advance a neighborhood walk-to-work model of employment. The Network is committed to helping connect neighborhood residents to family-sustaining jobs on Sunset Park's working waterfront. In the meeting, members analyzed the results of a 500 person needs assessment survey in Sunset Park which focused on identifying  workforce development needs in Sunset Park. SPEMN shared their excitement about our participation in the network stating, “as a newer neighborhood addition, we enthusiastically look to BATWorks, one of our Network partners, to offer access to state-of-the art training spaces at the Brooklyn Army Terminal as well as meaningful connections to new businesses offering careers in the green economy including in transportation, building electrification, and other energy sectors. BATWorks has been a valuable strategic partner in the Network and will continue to help the coalition achieve its aims.” We look forward to working with SPEMN as a core member of the network to help advance positive impact  within the Sunset Park community.

One of the biggest challenges that climate tech startups face is that there is no single funding source that can support a company from idea to commercialization. Climate tech founders often hear about venture capital, but scaling climate technology requires a more diverse pull of funding sources. Companies often need additional resources such as grants, working capital, equipment & project financing, infrastructure capital, insurance products, legal support, and strategic partnerships at different stages of growth. These topics were discussed during the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI)’s Climate Scaling Summit last Thursday at BATWorks. The event kicked off with a fireside chat featuring LACI's Adrienne C. Lindgren and Mark Hillhouse from Wells Fargo who discussed Wells Fargo's work with climate companies like Bloom. Attendees joined 1-1 speed-networking with organizations, investors, and other service providers to learn about a myriad of financing solutions they offer. 🗞️ ANNOUNCING THE OFFSHORE WIND INNOVATION HUB’S 2026 CALL FOR INNOVATORS 🗞️ It's official! We are thrilled to launch our 2026 Call for Innovators! Now in its fourth year, the program serves as a critical platform for advancing technologies that support offshore wind — including adjacent ocean and maritime sectors — and the broader climate economy. This year, we are especially seeking technologies that can maximize the performance and value of existing and near-term projects. Across three cohorts, the program has secured a 💸 combined $106 million in funding and achieved an average revenue growth of 67% following participation — with the 2025 cohort alone reporting a 327% year-over-year revenue increase. Innovators consistently rate the program 97% in satisfaction, citing it as a pivotal contributor to their success. With the addition of strategic partner NYSERDA, we are also excited to further deepen the program's ties to New York's clean energy transition while driving economic growth. This initiative is led by the Urban Future Lab at NYU Tandon School of Engineering and the National Offshore Wind Research & Development Consortium (NOWRDC), in collaboration with NYSERDA and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC).
