Space governance is evolving – and industry has a stake in shaping it 🌍🛰️ Outer space is already regulated through international law, including the UN Charter, the Outer Space Treaty and, where applicable, the law of armed conflict. Yet how these rules apply to today’s activities in orbit remains unclear. States are now working to clarify expectations and guide behaviour – through multilateral forums and national regulation. For industry, this matters: • Licensing and operational requirements will evolve • Data-sharing expectations may change • Definitions of “irresponsible” or threatening conduct are being shaped Commercial actors are not just affected – they can actively contribute. From technical standards to operational best practice and structured dialogue, industry plays a key role in shaping future governance frameworks. 💡 The key question: how can industry and policymakers work together to ensure clarity, stability and responsible conduct in space? 👉 Discuss this topic with us at #GSISHamburg2026 📅 09–10 December 2026 | CCH – Congress Center Hamburg ➡️Read more about this topic in the latest Executive Briefing by Dr Erin Pobjie, Senior Fellow for Space: https://lnkd.in/d-CBpz5a 📩 Subscribe to the newsletter to gain early access to our research findings: https://sohub.io/ffj6 🌐More information about GSIS: https://sohub.io/3qdz #GSISHamburg2026 #StrategicInnovation #GlobalSecurity #GSISHamburg Hamburg Messe und Congress #TheIdealConnection International Institute for Strategic Studies

As space becomes more crowded, the risks are evolving fast 🌍🛰️ By 2030, up to 100,000 satellites could be in orbit – mostly commercial. This surge signals innovation, but also growing vulnerability: • Higher collision and debris risks • Pressure on service continuity and insurance • Increasing complexity in mission assurance At the same time, commercial providers supporting defence face more direct interference – ranging from signal disruption to cyber attacks and close-proximity satellite manoeuvres. Geopolitics adds another layer: under the Outer Space Treaty, commercial activities are attributed to states. In a tense environment, civilian and national security interests are becoming increasingly blurred. 💡 The key question: how can we ensure resilience and trust in a contested orbital domain?

Many space technologies serve both civilian and military purposes. These include satellite communications, Earth observation, navigation, launch systems and space surveillance. They support applications such as telecommunications, weather forecasting and disaster relief, as well as military communications, reconnaissance and operational planning. As governments increase their investment in space security and resilience, these capabilities are becoming increasingly important for both commercial and defence actors. At the same time, their strategic relevance and commercial use raise questions regarding risks, regulation and the sustainable use of space. The graphic shows key dual-use technologies that shape today’s space sector and are examined in our latest study on the commercialisation of military space activities by Dr Erin Pobjie, Senior Fellow for Space: ➡️https://lnkd.in/d-CBpz5a 📩 Subscribe to the newsletter now to gain early access to our research findings: https://sohub.io/ffj6 📅 Save the date: 09–10 December 2026 | CCH – Congress Center Hamburg 🌐 Join industry leaders, policymakers and security experts at the Global Security and Innovation Summit to explore solutions, strengthen partnerships, and shape the future of critical infrastructure security.
