Goodbye Spaghetti LOOPs, Hello FOR…REDUCE: A Real ABAP Refactor Story 💡 From Legacy Code to Modern ABAP: FOR…REDUCE, REGEX and ASSERT to the rescue. Recently I worked on a very real-world case many ABAP developers will recognize: ❓ My process has an input parameter that is a set of financial documents (BLART range). I must validate each document to check whether it exists in a view where the field is a string of possible document types (Example: RV-DE-SP-RM). If the validation is positive, the method returns an internal table with data from another column of the view. Instead of sticking to the classic combo LOOP AT + SPLIT + helper tables, I decided to push it further and apply modern ABAP techniques: 🔹 Heavy use of FOR / REDUCE / LET / COND to express business logic in a declarative way. 🔹 Regular expressions (REGEX) to find document types as separated tokens without needing to SPLIT. 🔹 SORTED internal tables to prepare the design for efficient future lookups. 🔹 A coverage ASSERT to guarantee that every BLART in the range is actually represented in the Excel matrix (and catch incomplete configurations early). The result: ✅ Less “ceremonial” code and more focus on the actual business rule. ✅ One classic implementation with LOOP, and one modern version with FOR…REDUCE – perfect for comparing approaches. ✅ A solution that is more robust, readable, and future-proof. If you work with SAP ABAP and you’re not yet taking advantage of FOR, REDUCE and friends, these kinds of scenarios are perfect to start modernizing your developments without losing functional control. I converted a legacy SEGW OData service to RAP with an open-source MCP server. The matching UI5 freestyle app became Fiori elements, all in under 20 minutes. The centerpiece is ARC-1, my open-source MCP server for ABAP and ADT workflows. ARC-1 let the AI agent inspect the real SAP system, read the MPC and DPC_EXT classes, create the RAP artifacts, activate them, and publish the OData V4 service binding. From there, the same flow moved the UI from old UI5 freestyle JavaScript toward a metadata-driven Fiori elements app. For me, this is the interesting part: not generic code generation, but AI with real ABAP system context. ABAP Restful Programming Model (RAP): Modernization or Just Another Unnecessary Layer? Is RAP truly the revolution we need, or just another complexity imposed by SAP? What’s at stake here: modernization or forcing ABAP developers to adopt something that, for many, seems unnecessary? Why all the buzz around RAP? Sure, it offers integration with modern service standards and promises scalability. But let's be honest: how many critical projects that keep businesses running actually need this modernization? Is SAP ABAP going to die? Short answer- No. SAP ABAP is not dying. But the way you use ABAP is changing faster than most people realize. Let’s be Real for a second. ✅ A lot of ABAP developers are worried. ↳ “AI will replace coding” ↳ “Low-code tools will take over” ↳ “Everything is moving to the cloud” And honestly.... some of that fear is valid. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: ✅ If you stay in the old ABAP mindset, you will struggle. ↳ Only ECC reports ↳ Only classical dynpro ↳ No APIs ↳ No cloud exposure These roles are not disappearing overnight. But they are shrinking. Every year. ✅ Now here’s what most people are missing: - ABAP is becoming more important.
