    I take a nap and still perform at my best. In fact, sometimes I perform better because of it. That might sound counterintuitive in a culture that glorifies 5am starts, late nights and relentless productivity. One of the reasons I talk about “Optimal Alex” is because I deliberately protect the conditions that allow me to enter flow. During the week, I’m in bed by 8:30pm and up at 4:10am. I prioritise consistency. And if my recovery data is poor (from my Garmin), I will cancel the gym or take a short nap. I’m not ‘lazy’. I understand what performance actually requires. Recently, I worked with a client who wanted to be, in their words, “five times more productive.” As we unpacked what was happening, something else emerged. They were sleeping less than five hours a night. There is a hard truth here that many leaders don’t want to hear: You cannot be optimal on chronic sleep deprivation. Sleep is not a luxury. It is a biological requirement for high performance. During sleep, the brain consolidates memory, integrates learning and sharpens decision-making. It restores attention, improves creativity and strengthens emotional regulation. Flow requires deep focus, cognitive flexibility and sustained attention. All of those decline when we are under-rested. Research shows even one night of sleep deprivation reduces the likelihood of entering flow. Short naps, on the other hand, can increase flow opportunities by restoring clarity. Growing a business (and leading a team) is hard. But sacrificing your nervous system is not a performance strategy. If you want flow, start by protecting the conditions that make it possible.

    One of the most memorable presentations I attended at Microsoft had nothing to do with cloud architecture, AI, or performance engineering. It was about sleep. That still surprises people when I say it, especially knowing the rooms I sat in. Most of my time at Microsoft was spent in deeply technical sessions. High-performance systems. Complex architectures. Optimization at scale. The kind of material where the expectation is constant acceleration. And yet, the presentation that stayed with me was the one that focused on something far more basic. Hundreds of people attended. Engineers, leaders, operators. The reaction was immediate and quiet. Not hype. Recognition. You could feel how tired the room was. People did not need convincing. They needed permission to take the subject seriously. What made it powerful was the framing. You cannot out-engineer a depleted brain. Sleep is not a personal habit issue. It is core infrastructure for decision quality, focus, and emotional regulation. When it erodes, everything downstream degrades while still looking functional on the surface. Did you know: 1. Sleeping under six hours for one night impairs judgment and reaction time to a level comparable to alcohol intoxication. 2. Sleep loss hits the prefrontal cortex first, reducing decision quality, impulse control, and long-term thinking before motivation drops. 3. The brain clears metabolic waste during deep sleep. Less sleep means faster cognitive degradation. 4. Memory and learning consolidate during sleep. Cut sleep and you work longer while retaining less. 5. REM sleep regulates emotion. When it drops, stress reactivity and conflict sensitivity rise. I see founders now chasing leverage through tools, AI, and systems while running on broken sleep. They assume the problem is strategy or discipline. It rarely is. Sleep is the base layer. If it is unstable, nothing above it compounds. You cannot build clarity, resilience, or sustained performance on an exhausted nervous system. The smartest rooms in the world still run on human brains.     After 26 years of training high performers, I discovered their most overlooked superpower that allows them to outwork everyone else: It's sleep, but not in the way that you think. I used to try to out-hustle a tired brain and outperform a depleted body, but the fact is, I couldn't. If your sleep isn't replenishing you, it's becoming a danger to your goals. Succesful people don't win because they work when you're asleep, they succeeed because they work harder than you on the right things when you're awake. They're goals are clearer, they're schedule is optimized and they move without skipping a beat because their mind is always well rested. Since learning this I've worked with a sleep coach to optimize for one thing; performance when i'm awake. Here are the 8 habits that high performers use that I started copying: 1. Sleep at 67 degrees Cool environments trigger natural melatonin. You fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. 2. Block out light and sound Black out your room. Use white noise if needed. 3. Clear your mind before bed Use journaling or breath work. Quiet the mental loops that keep you awake. 4. Finish workouts at least 3 hours before bed Don't elevate cortisol late at night. Let your body unwind. 5. Same sleep and wake times daily Even on weekends to protect your natural rhythm. 6. Block 7 hours every night Sleep is non-negotiable. If you miss one night, don't miss two. 7. Cut stimulants by mid-afternoon No caffeine after 2 PM. These break up your sleep cycles. 8. Get up if you can't sleep after 20 minutes Reset and try again. Being successful is the result of how productive you are when you are awake, not the total hours you spend awake. Your day begins the night before. If you want to show up big tomorrow, start tonight. Protect your sleep like athletes do before game day. I treat my sleep like my most important bank account. Every bit of energy and focus you need during the day is a withdrawal.     You already know your thinking degrades after a poor night of sleep. What you have never been told is where the cost actually sits. It is not fatigue. It is clearance. Every hour of high-level cognition leaves biochemical residue in the form of amyloid beta and tau. These are not distant disease markers. They are the metabolic output of the exact neural activity you depend on to make decisions others cannot. Your brain has one system designed to remove that load.
