When it comes to using technology for operational efficiency, are you automating chaos or creating order? If you use the latest and greatest technology to automate the lamest process, you’ve lost. The real magic happens when you align your team on a standardized process before introducing technology. As Susie Cranston, President and COO of Cresset, shared in our recent Barron's Advisor podcast conversation: "Technology is the hardening of process. If we say we're going to automate how to open new accounts, that means we're going to take all the steps that people do manually today and make them forced steps that everybody takes in lockstep." The Cost of Using Too Many Systems As your firm grows, scaling efficiently becomes critical. However, if you keep adding systems without consolidating, you end up with a complex, disjointed infrastructure that requires 20 different logins. "You have to get consolidation at the operating platform as step number one, priority number one, always," Susie emphasized. Without system consolidation, you lose the "one safe source" for your data, compromise the client experience, and erode profit margins as you funnel resources into maintaining incompatible technologies. Balancing Process Standardization with Advisor Autonomy A key challenge in standardizing processes is maintaining advisor autonomy. No advisor likes "corporate" dictating how they should serve their clients. Susie addresses this tension by empowering her advisors while still ensuring process efficiency: "One of my golden rules is to try to let advisors be as empowered as humanly possible when it comes to how they service their clients. I believe in the platinum rule of client service: do unto your clients as they would have done to themselves." The secret, Susie explains, lies in making sure that any mandated processes are genuinely beneficial to advisors: "The bar that I hold for anything that's mandated for advisors is that it's something that is helpful and additive to them. The way that you can ensure that people are using the systems is to make the systems helpful and user friendly." Process First, Then Harden With Technology The firms that effectively balance process standardization with advisor autonomy are the ones that scale successfully and reach billions in AUM. Those that don’t get stuck in the La Brea Tar Pits of operational complexity and never make it out. So, before you invest in the latest technology, take a step back and assess your processes. Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD): Automating the build, test, and deployment process reduces manual effort, minimizes errors, and allows for faster iteration and feedback loops. 5 .
