Most evaluation methods are designed to measure what we planned for. But in complex systems, the most important changes are often the ones nobody anticipated. This brilliant How-To Sheet on Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) is part of the 360 Systems Guide by UNDP Food Systems. It's a a practical, end-to-end resource. I'm a long-standing advocate for REM and this guide captures why it's so valuable. It provides a clear introduction to the four core elements (appreciative inquiry, participatory approaches, interactive storytelling, and mind mapping) and how they work together to surface relational, behavioural, and cultural change that logframe metrics will never catch. There's a readiness checklist to help teams assess whether REM is the right approach for their initiative, covering programme scope, stakeholder engagement, types of outcomes, and practical requirements. It includes a step-by-step facilitation template, including paired appreciative inquiry interviews, a collaborative ripple mapping session, and group reflection, with probing questions like then what happened?, who else was affected?, and how have relationships or community conditions changed? Finally there's a coding and reporting template to convert the visual ripple map into structured data, enabling both qualitative and quantitative analysis, and making findings usable in grant proposals, strategy sessions, and community reporting. REM works best once early change is visible, but not yet fully understood. It's a tool for making sense of emergence not for proving a predetermined theory.

Summary
Project evaluation tools for agricultural development are structured methods used to assess whether agricultural projects meet their goals, create meaningful change, and benefit their communities. These tools help break down complex initiatives into measurable steps, making it easier to track progress and understand impact.
- Choose the right method: Select an evaluation approach that fits your project’s complexity, from logical frameworks to participatory mapping or statistical trials.
- Track meaningful change: Pay attention not only to planned results but also to unexpected outcomes that can reveal deeper shifts within communities.
- Report with clarity: Use visual maps, clear indicators, and structured data to communicate findings to stakeholders and support decision-making.

The Logical Framework (Logframe): Turning Project Ideas into Measurable Results in MEAL In Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL), one of the most powerful tools for designing, managing, and evaluating development interventions is the Logical Framework (Logframe). A Logframe is more than a project planning matrix; it is a strategic roadmap that links what a project intends to do with the results it seeks to achieve. It helps stakeholders clearly understand the pathway from activities to outputs, outcomes, and long-term impact. A well-designed Logframe answers four fundamental questions: 1️⃣ What do we want to achieve? (Results Hierarchy) The Logframe establishes a clear results chain: Inputs → Activities → Outputs → Outcomes → Impact For example: 🔹 Inputs: Funding, trainers, learning materials ⬇️ 🔹 Activities: Conduct entrepreneurship training ⬇️ 🔹 Outputs: Number of youth trained ⬇️ 🔹 Outcomes: Improved business management skills among youth ⬇️ 🔹 Impact: Increased youth employment and improved livelihoods 2️⃣ How will we know we are achieving it? (Indicators) A strong Logframe translates objectives into measurable indicators. Examples: ✅ Number of beneficiaries reached ✅ Percentage increase in household income ✅ School attendance rates ✅ Adoption of improved practices among target groups Good indicators should be SMART — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. 3️⃣ Where will we get evidence? (Means of Verification) MEAL professionals use the Logframe to identify data sources, including: Surveys, Project reports, Focus group discussions, Administrative records, and Field monitoring visits. This ensures that decisions are based on reliable evidence. 4️⃣ What assumptions and risks may affect success? No project operates in isolation. The Logframe captures external factors that may influence results, such as: Policy changes, Environmental conditions, Community participation, as well as Economic stability. Why is the Logframe important in MEAL? ✔️ Strengthens project design and clarity ✔️ Supports effective monitoring and evaluation ✔️ Improves accountability to donors and communities ✔️ Enables evidence-based decision-making ✔️ Promotes learning and adaptive management However, a Logframe should not be treated as a rigid document. Effective MEAL practice recognizes that projects operate in dynamic environments. The Logframe should evolve through continuous reflection, learning, and adaptation. A good Logframe does not only measure whether activities were completed; it helps us understand whether those activities created meaningful change. For MEAL practitioners, mastering the Logframe means mastering the art of connecting interventions, evidence, and impact. #MEAL #MonitoringAndEvaluation #LogicalFramework #Logframe #ProjectManagement #DevelopmentSector #ResultsBasedManagement #RBM #EvidenceBasedDecisionMaking #ImpactEvaluation

Building your evaluation toolkit? 🔍 Take a look at UNDP’s Evaluation Methods hub: https://lnkd.in/dYXa4GPj Alongside theory-based approaches, you’ll find clear primers on: • Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) • Quasi-experimental designs, including difference-in-difference, statistical matching and instrumental variables. What's interesting about the hub is that each method is shown against a small rating scale that indicates how well it can address five evaluation questions: ✔️ What was the net change caused by the intervention, and how much of the observed outcomes can be attributed to it? ✔️ How did the intervention impact different population groups under various circumstances? ✔️ How and why did the intervention make a difference—what mechanisms were at play? ✔️ Which other factors were necessary or sufficient for the outcomes achieved? ✔️ Which outcomes do different population groups consider most important? A straightforward way to compare designs when selecting the most appropriate option. The Logical Framework Approach (Logframe) is one of the simplest yet most powerful tools in project planning, monitoring and evaluation. At its core, it helps answer four critical questions: • What problem are we solving? • What change do we want to see? • How will we achieve it? • How will we measure success? The framework connects activities → outputs → outcomes → impact in a clear and logical way. For example: If we train farmers and provide drought-resistant seeds (activities), farmers improve production (outcome), which contributes to better food security (impact). What makes the Logframe powerful is that it forces projects to think beyond activities and focus on real change and measurable results. A good project is not just about what we do — it’s about the difference our work makes. #MonitoringAndEvaluation #MEAL #ProjectManagement #Logframe #HumanitarianWork #Development #ProgrammeManagement #ResultsBasedManagement #NGOs #ImpactMeasurement #LearningAndAccountability
