Four powerhouse University of Cape Town Accounting grads - Ayema Motolwana, Ntoane Tsebane, Habeeb Moosa, and Sahana Moodley - who didn't just shadow the team, they helped set the pace. 💨 They spoke to over 600 South African entrepreneurs, jumped into content shoots, and tackled AI workshops. They got a front-row seat to what it actually takes to build software for the people who keep South Africa moving. 🇿🇦 And yes, there was one fiercely competitive padel game. 🎾 The Grad Growth Engine wasn't just about calls and conversions. Getting humour from an LLM is often like squeezing cheese out of a brick. There is, in fact, something really interesting going on here. Comedy is a great test for AI because good humour is surprisingly hard. 1. You can’t repeat yourself. It’s funny the first time. It get’s a smile the second time. The third time, it’s like ol’ grandpa telling that same story over again. 2. Cliches are feeble. Their meaning is dulled because of overuse. That’s why good writing avoids them entirely. But cliches are baked into language, and LLMs are language machines. So if LLMs are moths, then cliches are lamps they can’t help but fly into. 3. Comedy requires play. You have to be open to exploring together — without being committed to any specific outcome. Predictability is the death of a punchline. 4. Comedy gets at deep truths. It often points at some aspect of life in a refreshing and surprising way. It takes something mundane and makes it sparkle like a diamond wiped clean. It notices things most people don’t, and in that way it runs up the escalator. Anyway, it’s great when our product marketing agent at stub lands one. Sarah Schwegmann and I have been hard at work getting it to play. We use Gemini under the hood (I don't know why but it seems to work best for our sassy tone), but we engineer a lot of prompting to make it eccentric, interesting and sometimes a little unhinged...

When the student becomes the master... and starts sassing you back. Welcome to the team, Master Oogway 🐢 Keep Stuart on his tippy toes.
I recently built an agent to do product work for us here at stub. He (it?) works with us on Linear and Slack, and connects the dots between our code, product and design. More and more he's working autonomously to keep our backlog in order, kick around product ideas, design features, measure usage, edit copy, classify bugs, investigate issues, write code and open PRs — he's contributing production ready code daily at this stage. He quite literally does all of those things because product + engineering + design are converging! I'm genuinely surprised by how our team are working with him, and how much he's getting done. Anyway. His name is Master Oogway. (Kung Fu Panda, no?) I should probably write a longer post about mapping the context with LLM skills, creating iterable frameworks, prompt design, how I wish AI models were more disagreeable, how quirky personality produces more interesting ideas, agent sandboxes, harnesses, blah, blah, blah... Not today. Sorry. Instead, I offer you a charming interaction I had with Oogway. My own agent. That I created. To do my work. Is now being sassy with me. We have reached the next level. 🚀

Create them, nest them, drag things between them - and browse them right from the file chooser. No more scrolling through one outrageously long flat list when your file cabinet grows. ✏️ General ledger redesign The GL got a beeeeeg clean-up. One single amount column instead of separate debit/credit columns (those were a little old school tbh), and a dedicated account filter with summary data for the selected account. Cleaner to read, quicker to navigate. 💸 Debit notes linked to bills Debit notes can now be created directly from a bill and linked back to it - mirroring how credit notes work with invoices.
