  • We love seeing our Members thrive and this captures exactly what makes our location so special. At Workshack, our focus has always been simple: create an environment where businesses can connect, support one another and unlock new opportunities. Hearing that our workspace helps teams feel at home, showcase their best work and spark new connections (whether around a boardroom table or a bonfire) is exactly why we do what we do. We are incredibly proud to have codebow and Andrew Cardoza and team as part of our community.

Our codebow HQ is situated in the heart of Stellenbosch, a university town that catapults big dreams into reality for many tech start-ups. Technopark, a veritable hub of technological innovation and entrepreneurship, boasts not only the homebase of codebow but the war-room of many a local tech SME. Their Workshack hub places networking and growing small businesses at the forefront of its ethos - collaborating with Stellenbosch University LaunchLab and Innovus Technology Transfer Office at Stellenbosch University bring cutting-edge tech, business owners and new collaborators together. We could not be prouder to be a part of the @workshack family with Carla Pietersen and her team doing a sterling job of making us feel - very at home. Being able to showcase our best work, meet potential new clients and huddle around the bonfire with our technological (and literal) neighbours gives us a leg-up in the world of SMEs. Sharing an article I wrote following the Climate & Manufacturing panel during the BRAIN Bootcamp in Stellenbosch, South Africa, hosted by Open Startup, Octoco, and Workshack. 📄 Sustainable Manufacturing in Africa: Designing the Transition The core insight: sustainable manufacturing in Africa is not just a technology challenge. It is a systems design challenge. During the panel, leaders across industry, academia, and investment unpacked what it actually takes to move from ambition to execution. We discussed fragmented regulatory systems, data interoperability gaps, commercialization bottlenecks, capital intensity, and the unique opportunity embedded in Africa’s early-stage energy transition. A few themes that stood out to me: • Climate tech operates high in the value chain, requiring patient capital and deep technical integration • Interoperable data standards are foundational for AI-enabled supply chains • Africa has the rare opportunity to design energy and industrial systems without heavy legacy constraints • The university-to-market pipeline must accelerate if industrial innovation is to scale The article reflects insights shared by Chifae Laazouzi, Brandon Paschal, Prof. Cristina Trois, @CJ van Rooyen, and Mwiche Mukoma, whose perspectives grounded the conversation in operational and investment realities. For me, this experience reinforced something we explore deeply in the MIT EMBA program: scaling innovation in emerging markets requires institutional design, capital alignment, and long-term strategic commitment. Sustainable manufacturing is not a single breakthrough. It is coordinated execution across ecosystems. Thank you to MIT Sloan, especially Johanna Hising DiFabio, Dr.Phil Budden, and the entire team, for bridging the gap between classroom learning to hands-on global ecosystem building. Grateful to Open Startup (under Houda Ghozzi, PhD leadership), the BRAIN accelerator community, and the founders building across the continent. Trenika L. 📄 #Article | Sustainable Manufacturing in Africa: Designing the Transition Sustainable manufacturing in Africa is a design problem at systems level. Shaped during our BRAIN Bootcamp ecosystem convening in Stellenbosch, hosted in partnership with Octoco and Workshack, this piece examines what it takes to transition industrial growth toward sustainability within African realities. From fragmented regulatory systems and data interoperability gaps to energy transition dynamics and capital efficiency, the discussion moves beyond ambition and into the conditions required for scale. Key takeaways include: • Climate tech operates high in the value chain, with longer sales cycles and deeper technical requirements • Interoperable data standards are foundational to supply chain modeling and AI deployment at scale • Africa’s energy transition is early, creating space to design systems without legacy constraints • Commercialization gaps between university research and market deployment must close faster The article reflects perspectives shared by Chifae Laazouzi, Brandon Paschal, Prof. Cristina Trois, G-J van Rooyen, and Mwiche Mukoma, grounding the conversation in industrial and investment realities. Written by Greg Knutson (MIT EMBA ’26), following the Climate & Manufacturing panel during the BRAIN Bootcamp. Read more → https://lnkd.in/dYypfnPS #BRAIN #OpenStartup

We were proud to host the Deploying DeepTech at Scale: Health & Climate in Africa event. The manufacturing panel highlighted a critical conversation around supply chain resilience, local sourcing, and scaling climate-conscious innovation across African industries. These are the kinds of practical, forward-thinking discussions we love seeing happen in our space. Thank you to Octoco, BRAIN, Open Startup and their programme partners, and the incredible panel for bringing such valuable insight into the room. #Workshack #Innovation #DeepTech #ClimateTech #AfricanInnovation

🎙️Panel | Climate, Manufacturing & Scaling Innovation in Africa During the Deploying DeepTech at Scale: Health & Climate in Africa event, the manufacturing panel featured G-J van Rooyen from Octoco alongside industry leaders from startups, academia, and the broader innovation ecosystem. One of the key themes discussed was supply chain resilience. Many African companies find it critical to source machines and components locally, as delays or shortages from abroad can significantly affect operations and business continuity. Supply chain delays and part availability can make or break operations, highlighting the importance of local solutions. The panel also explored where climate and manufacturing innovation are most applicable, and what needs to be in place for solutions to scale successfully. What made the discussion particularly valuable was the range of experience in the room, offering a well-rounded view of how climate-conscious manufacturing can scale across different contexts and industries. It was a powerful reminder that aligning innovation with operational realities unlocks tangible impact in African industries. Thank you to the panellists for a thought-provoking conversation: G-J van Rooyen, Brandon Paschal, Prof. Cristina Trois, Mwiche Mukoma, Chifae Laazouzi (Moderator) Thank you to BRAIN, Open Startup and their programme partners for the collaboration, and to Workshack for hosting us.

Last Thursday, our CEO, Nolan van Heerden, joined a panel of AI experts at The Open Letter event at Workshack to explore how enterprises are integrating AI into their operations. Alongside Oscar Smuts (Sidekick Lab), Othelo Vieira (Cloud On Demand) and Renier Kriel (Open Letter), the discussion covered the transformative potential of AI across various business functions. A key topic was the significant productivity gains businesses are achieving, from accelerating software development to streamlining UX design and automating repetitive "grunt work." These advancements allow teams to focus on creative problem-solving and high-value tasks that drive innovation. A critical insight from the panel: To truly harness AI’s potential, businesses must lay the essential groundwork to organise their data effectively. This involves securing permissions for sensitive data, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations, and filtering out outdated or irrelevant data to maintain accuracy and relevance. Clean, well-structured data is the foundation for AI to deliver its full impact. Conversations like these highlight not just the technology, but the real, tangible benefits AI can bring to how we work.
