AbstraetmA two-dimensional sheet model was used to study the dynamics of reentry around a zone of functional block. The sheet is a set of parallel, continuous, and uniform cables, transversely interconnected by a brick-wall arrangement of fixed resistors. In accord with experimental observations on cardiac tissue, longitudinal propagation is continuous, whereas transverse propagation exhibits discontinuous features. The width and length of the sheet are 1.5 and 5 cm, respectively, and the anisotropy ratio is fixed at approximately 4:1. The membrane model is a modified Beeler-Reuter formulation incorporating faster sodium current dynamics. We fixed the basic wavelength and action potential duration of the propagating impulse by dividing the time constants of the secondary inward current by an integer K. Reentry was initiated by a standard cross-shock protocol, and the rotating activity appeared as curling patterns around the point of junction (the q-point) of the activation (A) and recovery (R) fronts. The curling R front always precedes the A front and is separated from it by the excitable gap. In addition, the R front is occasionally shifted abruptly through a merging with a slow-moving triggered secondary recovery front that is dissociated from the A front and q-point. Sustained irregular reentry associated with substantial excitable gap variations was simulated with short wavelengths (K = 8 and K = 4). Unsustained reentry was obtained with a longer wavelength (K = 2), leading to a breakup of the q-point locus and the triggering of new activation fronts.

In order to master the growing complexity of analogue electronic systems, modelling and simulation of analogue hardware at various levels is absolutely necessary. This paper presents an original modelling method based on the graphical description of analogue electronic functional blocks. This method is intended to be automated and integrated into a design framework: specialists create behavioural models of existing functional blocks, that can then be used through high-level selection and specification. Applications of behavioural modelling are discussed.

We investigated whether the transplant of Schwann cells prevents the physiological and morphological effects of monocular deprivation in the rat. On the day of eye opening in rats (postnatal day 14), we transplanted Schwann cells in the lateral ventricles and sutured the eyelids of one eye. After 20-30 days, at the end of the critical period for the visual system development, we analyzed the functional properties of visual cortical neurons. Spontaneous discharge, orientation selectivity, and receptive field size of visual cortical neurons in transplanted animals were in the normal range. Transplantation of Schwann cells prevented the detrimental effects of monocular deprivation on ocular dominance and binocularity of cortical neurons. Visual acuity of the deprived eye estimated by visually evoked potentials was also normal. Schwann cells derived from adult animals were as effective as those derived from neonates. This paper proposes an approach to achieving fast reconfiguration of modular manufacturing systems, based on an ontology-based reconfiguration agent. The agent uses ontological knowledge of the manufacturing environment for the purpose of reconfiguration without human intervention. The current mass customization era requires increased flexibility and agility in the manufacturing systems to adapt changes in manufacturing requirements and environments. Our configuration agent minimises the overheads of the current reconfiguration process by automating it. It infers facts about the manufacturing environment from the ontological knowledge model and then decides whether the current environment can support the given manufacturing requirements. This paper proposes the agent architecture enabling the integration between the high level planning with the distributed low level control compliant with the upcoming IEC 61499 function blocks standard.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) protein-integrin-cytoskeleton axis plays a central role as a mechanotransducing protein assemblage in many cell types. However, how the process of mechanotransduction and the mechanical generated signals arising from this axis affect myofilament function in cardiac muscle are not completely understood. We hypothesize that ECM proteins can regulate cardiac function through integrin binding, and thereby alter the intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca 2+ ] i ) and/or modulate myofilament activation processes. Force measurements made in mouse papillary muscle demonstrated that in the presence of the soluble form of the ECM protein, fibronectin (FN), active force was increased significantly by 40% at 1 Hz, 54% at 2 Hz, 35% at 5 Hz and 16% at 9 Hz stimulation frequencies. Furthermore, increased active force in the presence of FN was associated with 12-33% increase in [Ca 2+ ] i and 20-50% increase in active force per unit Ca 2+ . A function blocking antibody for α5 integrin prevented the effects of the FN on the changes in force and [Ca 2+ ] i , whereas a function blocking α3 integrin antibody did not reverse the effects of FN. The effects of FN were reversed by an L-type Ca 2+ channel blocker, verapamil or PKA inhibitor. Freshly isolated cardiomyocytes exhibited a 39% increase in contraction force and a 36% increase in L-type Ca 2+ current in the presence of FN. Fibers treated with FN showed a significant increase in the phosphorylation of phospholamban; however, the phosphorylation of troponin I was unchanged. These results demonstrate that FN acts via α5β1 integrin to increase force production in myocardium and that this effect is partly mediated by increases in [Ca 2+ ] i and Ca 2+ sensitivity, PKA activation and phosphorylation of phospholamban.
