The rise of digital media has fundamentally transformed the production, distribution, and consumption of literature, altering both the form and content of literary texts. This paper will explore how the digital transformation of literature-through e-books, hypertext fiction, interactive storytelling, and other digitally born works-poses significant challenges to traditional approaches to literary analysis and criticism. It will focus on how digital technologies have redefined the nature of texts and how readers engage with these texts. This study will analyze key theoretical frameworks, case studies, and contemporary digital works to assess how interpretive practices must adapt to account for this shift. Additionally, the article will explore how these changes may require a reconsideration of established concepts in literary theory, such as authorship, the role of the reader, and the nature of the literary canon.

The purpose of this contribution is to present an educational and interactive tool to be accessed on-line to share knowledge about Aegean archaeological collections held by various museums in Tuscany, Italy, and reconnect them to the geographical sites they come from, recovering also the historical, cultural and technical information to understand better the importance of the artifacts which suffer of limited visibility where they are now kept. The paper is tailored to show how the described structure and exploration modalities of MUSINT's virtual museum meet these expectations, addressing one of the subject fields offered by the displayed contents: the Cretan collection in Florence, and particularly, within the collection, they clay finds from the Messara region, where the excavations of the renowned sites of Haghia Triada and Phaistos were carried out by the Italian Mission in Crete from the beginning of the 20 th century. Scholars and students practice literacy, numeracy, and graphicacy in school. In this educational triumvirate, graphicacy remains the less familiar term. Graphicacy is an ability, a fluency in making and reading visualizations and charts. How might scholars working in digital media practice graphic literacy in the shaping and sharing of their work? By working with more awareness of graphic literacy, scholars can also become more inclusive. In this illustrated essay, I will describe how my work in visualizing survey data provides insight into graphic literacy. Survey data is a primary data source. These observations have the potential for meaning yet need a meaningful structure and shape. While structuring, exploring, and visualizing this survey data, diverse worldviews begin to emerge. Digital scholars can also identify when to draw upon data-driven or conceptual content. By creating interactive survey data visualizations, we can partake in more inclusive humanistic inquiries and reading experiences.

The topic of archaeological apothekes, i.e., storage areas not intended for display and not accessible to the public (depositi in Italian), has only recently received the attention it deserves, for reasons related to the history of research methodology. The archiving of archaeological material poses specific problems compared to other categories of material with which the process is generally associated, such as artistic artefacts. Excavation finds consist mainly (and increasingly) of a mass of anonymous, repetitive pottery fragments, not destined to be accessible to the public. The management of these storage facilities poses two sets of problems linked with its archiving: on one hand, its (digital) documentation; on the other hand, its physical arrangement. Both aspects have often been contemplated, but as separate entities by different specialists (archaeologists, conservators, etc.). An adequate approach requires however both aspects to be considered together, for archaeological material only achieves its full value when its context of origin is secure. Only proper management of digital and physical archives can ensure a full understanding of the historical significance of archaeological material. These challenges also apply to the Archaeological Mission of Phaistos, in Crete, where Italian have been active since 1900. The reorganisation of the warehouses in 2024-2025 provided an opportunity to adequately address both the digital archiving of the material and the layout of the warehouses, tackling at the same time the particularly pressing issue in this case of the reuse of 'legacy data', which poses problems of standardization. This led also to a new perspective, using old labels and boxes as metadata to reconstruct the methods of archaeological research. The main results however were the creation of a holistic approach to the management of archaeological material and its (written, graphic, photographic, and topographic) documentation through the adoption and implementation of PyArchInit (version 4.9.5), a plug-in of QGIS (version 3.40.7 Bratislava).

The increasing use of digital tools in archaeology has vastly expanded our capacity to document and visualise the past, yet the reasoning that connects evidence to interpretation often remains implicit or undocumented. This paper addresses that gap by integrating Inference to the Best Explanation (IBE)-a philosophical model of hypothesis evaluation-into the Archaeological Interactive Report (AIR), a semantic platform for managing and visualising archaeological data. We demonstrate how this integration enables transparent, iterative, and reproducible archaeological interpretation by structuring hypotheses, linking them to evidence, and assessing them against explanatory virtues. Two case studies illustrate the potential of this framework: the systematic reconstruction of the House of the Greek Epigrams in Pompeii, and an experimental application to the Gribshunden shipwreck, where reasoning evolves alongside data collection. The result is a replicable method that formalises archaeological argumentation and embeds it directly within digital infrastructure, making interpretation not only visible, but critically assessable and reusable.

The aim of our interdisciplinary project is to characterize the perceptibility and visual effects of figurative architectural terracottas by simulating typical light and shadow patterns. In its initial phase, we focus on the finds from the Republican House I.2 in Fregellae (Latium), early examples of the elaborate relief decorations of the eaves zone in Roman atrium houses. In addition to the digital visualization, our project contributes to current research on light and images in Roman houses, which has so far focused on wall and floor design.

Proponer el modelo de una "Elocuencia Diagramática" medieval implica una interpretación más amplia de la producción figurativa científica y filosófica a partir de la exposición visual de los contenidos teóricos de las artes liberales. Se toma como hilo conductor, los diagramas que simulan una concepción espaciotemporal de la naturaleza, lo que representa una noción de la secuencia del tiempo respecto de la posición espacial del observador y su relación con la experiencia de los fenómenos físicos. Se denomina a este modelo "elocuencia", porque se elabora un discurso visual a partir de la tradición de las artes liberales y de la experiencia de la naturaleza, lo que implica tanto a las formas argumentativas de cada disciplina como a la discusión acerca de los principios del conocimiento. De ahí el nombre "Elocuencia" y su relación con la especulación filosófica proyectada en herramientas visuales. Las artes liberales utilizaron estas herramientas y fueron representadas en imágenes que incluían alusiones a la observación de la naturaleza y a su relación con nociones lógico-metafísicas que explicaban el movimiento físico. Los primeros datos disponibles sobre el escrutinio del tiempo fueron los movimientos del sol y la luna que marcaban la periodización de los calendarios sagrados. Los diagramas fueron herramientas complejas aplicadas por otras disciplinas como la ética, la teología y la lógica que utilizaron figuras circulares para la recopilación de relaciones conceptuales. Las volvelles -o círculos- como las como las tablas que representaban las secuencias temporales de los movimientos físicos se convirtieron en modelos diagramáticos para otras disciplinas que las usaron como vehículos de explicación teórica en los cuales la percepción visual y las hipótesis conceptuales dieron forma a la ciencia demostrativa premoderna basada en figuraciones de nuestra experiencia frente a los fenómenos físicos.

In recent years, the field of Asian art has undergone extensive study. However, there is a fundamental gap in the bibliometric analysis of trends and directions in the field. The purpose of this article study is to provide a comprehensive review through bibliometric analysis. this study conducted a literature search in web of science databases, and screening included scie, ssci, and A&Hci. in total, 676 studies between 1997 and 2023 were compiled and visualized using vosviewer, scimago software, and Bibliometrix (r package). The collected data identifies research hotspots, evolutionary processes, and the field's development dynamics, as well as identify key themes and research directions. studies on Asian art exhibited steady growth before 2016 but experienced a substantial increase from 2017 to 2023. this article maps publication trends, subject categories, and institutional contributions, offering insights into the geographical and institutional distribution of research. Additionally, the study analyses the author co-citation network, revealing collaborative structures within the field. the research hotspots and trends were identified through keyword clustering and timeline analysis. these findings not only provide rich references for the global perception of Asian art but also provide insights for future research.

This essay endeavors to elucidate the issues of Cultural Analytics and media visualization methods as an emerging research paradigm in Digital Humanities. The central element to this issue is the question: What are Cultural Analytics? In this paper, I define this scientific discipline as the utilization of computational visualization techniques to delve into contemporary and historical cultures, focusing on big cultural datasets and visual media. While traditional Digital Humanities research has centered on textual data, historical artifacts, and the digitization of various media objects, Cultural Analytics emphasizes the examination of big cultural datasets and visual media – both digitized visual artifacts, and interactive digital media. In the case of media visualization methods, this approach, on the one hand, retains the expansive viewpoint on the situation, provided by traditional data visualization, while on the other hand, it diverging from fictionalization. Cultural Analytics introduces innovative perspectives on media visualization methods such as “close reading” and “distant reading.” Lev Manovich and his research team have developed the ImagePlot application, which is a free software tool for visualizing images, films, and video files of any size, using by media visualization methods. In my opinion, Cultural Analytics using media visualization methods falls in the scope of Digital Humanities. This essay concludes with an analysis of the research project “Phototrials” from the perspectives of Cultural Analytics, Software Studies, and media visualization methods, which reaffirms the significance of Cultural Analytics within Digital Humanities.

Recent development of built heritage digitisation has not included required interest on scientific control tool. Without such information, such efforts can be useless for later reuse of digital models. Paradata were developed with this purpose but discussion about its content remained limited. This paper aims to provide a first specific set for digital three-dimensional models of built heritage based on other experiences and previous fieldwork. It includes works developed with photogrammetry, 3D scanning and at a lesser extent manual CAD reconstruction. Thanks to these series of paradata it would be possible not only to document the scientific process behind the digitisation of heritage, but also to provide data for further research.

The description of a burnished metal sphere adorned with a petasus hat 320 feet in diameter that was part of the Tomb of Lars Porsena sounds like an ancient account of a crashed flying saucer; which might explain the great efforts by the Roman military to completely disassemble this lost wonder of the ancient world.

Three dimensional visual recognition and measurement are important in many machine vision applications. In some cases, a stationary camera base is used and a three-dimensional model will permit the measurement of depth information from a scene. One important special case is stereo vision for human visualization or measurements. In cases in which the camera base is also in motion, a seven dimensional model may be used. Such is the case for navigation of an autonomous mobile robot. The purpose of this paper is to provide a computational view and introduction of three methods to three-dimensional vision. Models are presented for each situation and example computations and images are presented. The significance of this work is that it shows that various methods based on three-dimensional vision may be used for solving two and three dimensional vision problems. We hope this work will be slightly iconoclastic but also inspirational by encouraging further research in optical engineering.

The article addresses a project of visualization of research on ambient music, including the historically changing subject of this research, its theoretical background and qualitative studies arising from it. In this study, the visualization of the research process is related to the concept of graphesis, or visual interpretation, discussed and partly problematized in the context of visual representation of interdisciplinary topics at the interface of various knowledge systems.

Theoretical debates about the appropriateness of computer-assisted research for historians have now lost relevance. While some researchers have remained unconvinced since the 1960s and others, early-converted, have now had crises of faith, the computerization of research and writing is no longer in question. Word processing has proven to be the point of entry (and often the extent of application) for many current users, but substantive computer-based analysis has now reached most departments of history. The creation and examination of machine-readable data have encompassed scholars of both words and numbers and, while controversy continues over modes of analysis, the utility of computers has gained a consensus of acceptance if not general enthusiasm.

By applying the contemporary theories of schema, metonymy, metaphor, and conceptual blending, I argue in this paper that salient cognitive categories facilitate a deeper analysis of Tantric language. Tantras use a wide range of symbolic language expressed in terms of mantric speech and visual man. d. alas, and Tantric texts relate the process of deciphering meaning with the surge of mystical experience. In this essay, I will focus on some distinctive varieties of Tantric language with a conviction that select cognitive tools facilitate coherent reading of these expressions. Mystical language broadly utilizes images and metaphors. Deciphering Tantric language should therefore also provide a framework for reading other varieties of mystical expressions across cultures.

As ubiquitous sensing becomes embedded in our everyday world, we can easily obtain multimodal sensor data from our physical surroundings. Objectivity is a core value in the visualization research community. However, personal experiences are characterized not only by objective facts, but by personal emotions. In this paper, we explore immersive data visualization for conveying personal subjective perception and experience by using multidimensional data and multimedia. We introduce a framework to describe narrative structures in immersive data visualization, and provide an example project Baguamarsh as a proof of theme-based creative methods for designing correlations between different information. We hope this study may offer outline opportunities for future research in narrative visualization.

The chapter presents a reflection on the concept of transparency in digital modeling and visualization of Architectural Heritage. Moving from topics of transparency and from the experiences in using paradata in different fields to state model's source, the degree of reliability of virtual reconstructions , and to made the digital model testable by other professionals, transparency and paradata are studied and declined for a dedicated application to historical buildings. In fact paradata is useful for model's design, use, management, diffusion, archiving, and interoperability. This according to an aim of model's intellectual transparency, and scientific computing and visualization of historic buildings. Follows issues about: the relationship between physical and digital heritage, the design of the digital 3D model and the database, the communication of transparency through spatial visualizations and multiple windowed representations, the transparency as possible methodological workflow for scientific analysis.

Publishing digital anthologies and databases, testing out new models of distribution, exhibition, and preservation, and building interdisciplinary collaboration not only between traditional academic disciplines but also between distinct international communities, one might think of electronic literature as the research and development wing of the digital humanities. Despite its long history and prowess, Heloros is and therefore less known. This article answers crucial questions regarding the site's chronology, architecture, and topography. This involves digitizing and verifying legacy data and fusing them in a Geographic Information System with newly acquired 3D and geospatial documentation that we collected using global positioning, digital photogrammetry, drones, terrestrial and airborne Light Detection and Ranging, and ground penetrating radar. Our results present new insights into Heloros' history, including information about its pre-Greek occupation and revisions to the interpretation of important buildings and fortifications. Our research demonstrated that the Archaeology of Archaeology investigation we carried out at Heloros, when enhanced by our 'digital excavation' approach can generate new knowledge on archaeological sites without requiring new excavations.

As games increase in narrative complexity, challenges mount for their story designers. As authors, these designers are concerned with building an experience that responds to players in consistent and engaging ways, even when players make unpredictable story choices amongst a large group of options. Furthermore, they want those choices to have narrative impact. However, historically the task of authoring such narratives can prove daunting or infeasible. One approach to solving this problem is to use external tools to visualize story structure. This paper introduces a new set of design-time visualizations for combinatorial interactive narrative authoring. By using these visualizations during the creation of Ice-Bound (an interactive narrative iPad game) we were able to author content within a large combinatorial possibility space, and achieve both desired player freedom and content responsiveness. This generalized visualization strategy could also prove useful to future interactive narratives using combinatorial approaches.

The principal aim of the Internet Shakespeare Editions is to "create and publish works for the student, scholar, actor, and general reader in a form native to the medium of the Internet." Our focus to date, as texts are being edited, has been to create hypertext editions, capable of being annotated both by text and by multimedia objects. The infrastructure created by TAPoR (Text Analysis Portal for Research), however, provides an opportunity to go further than the hypertext edition, by integrating into it the capabilities offered by textual analysis software. The aim will be to develop an interface that permits a user to go beyond the hard links provided by the editor in the basic hypertext structure to explore in a more fluid way the text of a given play, and to extend the exploration to related texts by Shakespeare and other relevant writers in the period.

Provenance study through XRF analysis of 26 samples of obsidian flints and blades from Phaistos and Haghia Triada reveals an interesting pattern: all the neolithic material has its source in the Demenegaki quarry in Melos, the majority of the EM I samples, and all the EM II ones come from the site of Sta Nykia in the same island, while MM IA-B samples originated from both quarries. This shift in time reveals not only internal dynamics in Melos, but poses also the problem of the discrepancy between the early exploitation of Melian quarry and the floruit of Melian culture in EBA II

In recent years, virtual reality and augmented reality have emerged as areas of extreme interest as unique methods for visualising and interacting with digital museum artefacts in a different context, for example, as a virtual museum or exhibition, particularly over the Internet. Modern cultural heritage exhibitions have evolved from static to dynamic exhibitions and challenging explorations. This paper presents two different applications developed for the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery that make the user’s experience more immersive, engaging, and interactive. The first application utilizes mobile phone devices in order to enrich the visitors experience in the museum, and the second application is a serious game for cultural heritage and in particular for museum environments focusing on the younger visitors.

PASTEXAMINATIONS OF THE interactions of librarianship with historical scholarship have noted problems that libraries face in serving historians. This article examines changes in the nature of historical work that have occurred over the last four decades including the advent of computers and electronic texts. The authors examine recent developments-such as electronic publishing, electronic mail, electronic journals, and hypertext databases-and suggest that some of these tools will be of limited use to historians, due to the nature of historical scholarship. While some historians may be reluctant to adopt computer technology, many of them already use computers in writing. Historians' personal computers will be a gateway for new forms of electronic information, as evidenced by the publication of various CD-ROM files of relevance to historians. Other publishing projects in the humanities also offer examples that historians can follow in the use of electronic text and images.

Situating Rome within wider debates on Classical Urbanism is notoriously challenging. It cannot be ignored; the city was the point of reference for a civilization built on urban centres. Rome's resilient power to absorb, adapt and represent itself underpinned its longevity. Yet while this rightly ensures Rome has a profound significance in discussions of the Classical and Late Antique city, the pulse that sustained the urbs Roma aeterna was also very much its own. No urban centre in the Mediterranean world could match its sustained dynamism, and as Purcell (2007) observed in his discussion of the horti of peri-urban Rome, the drivers that underpinned its evolution were often particular to the circumstances of the city itself. The European Research Council-funded 'Rome Transformed' Project https://research.ncl.ac.uk/rometrans/ (grant agreement No. 835271, Haynes et al. 2020; 2021; 2022) seeks to understand better this dynamism and its implications, through detailed study of a neighbourhood on the periphery of the Late Republican city, outside Rome's pomerium, which went on to become the centre of western Christendom for a millennium. The project's focus is on the eastern Caelian, and most particularly, on the eight formative centuries that ran from the Principate of Augustus to the Pontificate of Leo III. This paper concentrates on the first four of those centuries. Before proceeding, we would argue that the word 'transformation' needs to be reclaimed. In one of the biggest debates in the study of Classical Urbanism, discussion of the 'end' of ancient cities, the term has become baggage laden. For some, notably Ward-Perkins (2005, 4) it is too neutral to apply to what befell Rome and her empire. The article presents the results of a wider research carried out by a multidisciplinary group (archaeologists and engineers) of the University and the CNR-ISPC of Catania in the South-Western Quarter of the Minoan Palace of Phaistos (Crete). The article focuses on two digital survey campaigns carried out respectively in 2014, laser scanning, and 2019, Structure from Motion. Starting from the point cloud by laser scanner, the most recent, low cost and user-friendly photogrammetric tools (GoPro camera and software Agisoft Metashape) have been used during the 2019 campaign in order to update and to improve the previous dataset, which was used as a grid for georeferencing and scaling the new virtual model. Special attention was addressed to the comparison of the two datasets and to the reuse of the first one for georeferencing and scaling the second one. In this work, we focus on the document visualization strategy to support the access to information in the digital era. First, we discuss the dynamics of the document visualization approach and the ability to generate innovations with a direct impact in the digital transformation competitive scenario. Second, we discuss the visualization and computational intelligence methods such as data mining and knowledge discovery as
important tools to improve decision making process. Then we present the knowledge organization systems concept and the main challenges related to document visualization strategy. Finally, we discuss the digital and visual literacies have become common to how we read and view information and communicate with others to meet the demands of the transformations of the digital age.

Emotional expression in digital form has become increasingly ubiquitous via the proliferation of computers and handheld devices. Using online surveys and live chat experiments across four studies and 1325 individuals (Study 1A-B and 2A-B), and a large social media dataset spanning 4.9 billion individuals (Study 3), we examine whether digital emotion expression (emojis) predicts happiness at the individual and national levels. Our studies converge on three central findings. First, people use emojis in text-based communication to convey emotional experience. Second, the amount and diversity of emojis causally increases happiness during social interactions. Third, across 122 countries, higher total amount and greater diversity of emoji usage per capita and per user correlate with higher national happiness. Across levels of analysis, our results suggest that both the amount and diversity of digital emotion expression influences well-being.

Geographic visualization tools with coordinated and multiple views (CMV) typically provide sets of visualization methods. Such configuration gives users the possibility of investigating data in various visual contexts; however, it can be confusing due to the multiplicity of visual components and interactive functions. We addressed this challenge and conducted an empirical study on how a CMV tool, consisting of a map, a parallel coordinate plot (PCP), and a table, is used to acquire information. We combined a task-based approach with eye-tracking and usability metrics since these methods provide comprehensive insights into users' behaviour. Our empirical study revealed that the freedom to choose visualization components is appreciated by users. The individuals worked with all the available visualization methods and they often used more than one visualization method when executing tasks. Different views were used in different ways by various individuals, but in a similarly effective way. Even PCP, which is claimed to be problematic, was found to be a handy way of exploring data when accompanied by interactive functions.

The integration of digital photogrammetry and laser scanning technologies in archaeology has transformed data acquisition, enabling efficient and precise documentation. However, this digital shift raises concerns about information overload, the potential loss of on-site insights, and the need for suitable data management methods. Over the past 15 years, digital tools like photogrammetry, laser scanning, and unmanned aerial vehicles have advanced cultural heritage documentation. These methods offer detailed 3D models of archaeological sites, artifacts, and monuments, with evolving accessibility and user friendliness. This paper delves into methods for documenting cultural heritage, examining the implications of various approaches on the archaeologist’s workflow and on the field as a whole.

The analysis of painted pottery is instrumental for understanding ancient Greek society and human behavior of past cultures in Archaeology. A key part of this analysis is the discovery of cross references to establish links and correspondences. However, due to the vast amount of documented images and 3D scans of pottery objects in today’s domain repositories, manual search is very time consuming. Computer aided retrieval methods are of increasing importance. Mostly, current retrieval systems for this kind of cultural heritage data only allow to search for pottery of similar vessel’s shape. However, in many cases important similarity cues are given by motifs painted on these vessels.
