Migration and Food Consumption

This study aims to explore the impact of forced migration on the eating habits of migrants. It also seeks to determine whether people who have experienced forced migration have transmitted the foods they consider their own to future generations. For this purpose, indepth interviews were conducted with 13 families who migrated to Türkiye. After World War II, approximately 500,000 Bosnians, Albanians, and Pomaks in Yugoslavia and Bulgaria were forced or encouraged to leave their lands. Türkiye accepted these migrants at that time. Long before these migrations, Crimean Tatars had begun migrating to the Ottoman Empire when the Russian army entered Crimea in 1771, and this migration continued throughout the 19th century. The participants in the study are members of families who experienced these migrations. According to the interviews, although Türkiye welcomed the migrants after the forced migration, the newcomers experienced diff iculties in adaptation. They went through a process of acculturation as they became familiar with Turkish cuisine and culture, integrating many Turkish dishes into their own culinary traditions. However, the best way for them to ease their longing for home was to continue cooking and eating their traditional dishes, at least on special occasions. They sought to pass on their culinary knowledge and signature recipes to future generations, and the younger generations regarded this food culture as a part of their family's historical heritage and identity. Despite the fast pace of life in a changing world, they have continued to cook and consume these traditional foods.

Global migration has brought about changes in the labour market and the consumer environment of both developed and developing economies. The entry of migrants into the host nations also changes consumer behaviour, as their migration into the formal labour markets influences the economy's productivity and social cohesion. Nevertheless, most segmentation models used by business operators and political experts do not give attention to the dynamic nature of the labour market position of migrants in influencing consumption behaviour. The paper will examine the impact of the different levels of labour market inclusion of migrant groups in society, which include the informal employment experiences to a more stabilised form of economic inclusion, on consumer identity and preferences, as well as responses towards specific marketing techniques. This study employs a mixed-methods scheme, located between national labour and consumer survey data and qualitative cross-region implicitness interviews that will be held in the choice regions with a high population density of the targeted migrants. The study finds the trends in income expenditure, brand loyalty, product preferences, and cultural consumption among migrant groups with varying employment and economic assimilation rates, respectively. It was found that the migrants who are fully integrated in the labour market display very similar consumer behaviour to that of the native population in terms of brand embrace and discretionary spending. Conversely, migrants working in precarious jobs display less price-driven consumption, need-oriented market dynamics, and commonly work outside the mainstream business logistics. Notably, the analysis reveals that labour integration is not only the economic situation but also the consumer segmentation role regulator that impacts access to market and culture, even partly. The research findings show that the issue of labour market integration should be factored in when marketers and policymakers develop segmentation strategies, particularly in multicultural urban contexts. The inclusion of economic inclusion can result in a more precise target, inclusive branding, and fair access to goods and services using a segmentation model.

Aos estudantes do curso de Geografia do IESA com quem pude conviver e trabalhar: alunos da Turma 2007 na disciplina Demografia no ano de 2010, ao Johnathan, João Paulo, Galileu, Adriano, Nélton, Jovenita, Leila, Tathi, e outros que nos animam e nos fazem deslumbrar uma geografia em movimento e renovação. Aos colegas do Colegiado de Geografia da Universidade Federal do Amapá. À minha família toda, em especial à minha mãe e ao meu irmão Caetano, que sempre serão como o chão natal, a casa da infância, as minhas raízes. Aos migrantes goianienses com quem pude estar, que me abriram suas casas, narraram suas memórias, compartilharam seus desejos e anseios, e que sem esta abertura não existiria a tese. Não citar seus nomes aqui é uma forma de respeito, e também um modo de trazer para estas linhas a presença destes sujeitos tidos como "invisíveis". RESUMO Esta tese empreende um estudo sobre as imagens produzidas por migrantes goianienses que vivem na cidade de São Francisco, nos Estados Unidos, e como estas mediam uma conexão entre lugares fundados em vivências e experiências. Tais imagens são narrativas de experiências de trânsito, iniciadas com a saída do lugar de origem, pela transposição de fronteiras até chegar aos lugares desejados, e atuam na produção e circulação de saberes espaciais que reverberam em estratégias de sobrevivência e sublevação no processo migratório. A tese que defendemos é a de que estes migrantes goianienses, ao saírem de seu lugar de origem e migrarem, constroem imagens que são apresentações de suas práticas socioespaciais entre "dois lugares", repletas de contradições e ambiguidades a serem reconhecidas. O objetivo principal desta tese é propor a compreensão da migração de goianienses para a cidade de São Francisco, representada a partir de imagens produzidas por estes, que versam sobre suas experiências e que estabelecem uma conexão entre lugares. Sobre a metodologia construída, esta se fez em diálogo com a époche fenomenológica, em busca de descrever os fenômenos a partir de nossas percepções e compreensões, e assim criar formas de enunciação da experiência. Utilizamo-nos assim, a observação empírica, a coleta e leitura de imagens (dados) em documentos oficiais, pesquisa participativa, análise de narrativas, vivências na internet e o trabalho de campo no lugar deste grupo migrante. Nesta tese concluiu-se que, o sujeito migrante, ao se lançar como viajante em busca de melhores oportunidades de vida constrói a sua existência espacialmente, espacializa a existência, implica-se na história do lugar, estabelece lugares mediante sentidos e significações, tal qual o momento em que este os funda, revelando o espaço como enunciado da existência de sujeitos migrantes. A analise de conversa inspirada em Bakhtin permite explorar as formas em que o discurso hegemonico colonial afeta as experiencias de imigracao expressadas atraves da narrativa. O artigo se debrucara em uma conversa sobre a experiencia de imigracao no Reino Unido, centralizando a voz da mulher negra brasileira imigrante para explorar as multiplas vozes (heteroglossia) presentes em sua narrativa. O foco e questionar a nocao de “invasora” remetida a condicao de imigrante no Reino Unido atraves da dinâmica relacao com outras dimensoes de vozes narrando colonialidade, agencia e resistencia. Human movements via migrations facilitate the transport of plants and knowledge. Migrations were always present in our human history, but conflicts and environmental changes are contributing to the increase in people’s movements to and from different parts of the world. In this literature review, our focus is on the ethnobotany of food plants and migrations, and the adaptations following this process. We analyzed 58 studies dealing with human migrations and food plants, including both internal migrations and international ones, over a wide period from several centuries to the present but with the predominance of migrations since the second half of the twentieth century. Most studies reported migrations between countries or regions (80%) in which people search for better economic opportunities. A “Idéias” – Revista do Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas – da Unicamp abre a edição do primeiro semestre de 2011 com o Dossiê “Migrações”, esse contou com a colaboração de pesquisadores que tem no cerne de suas reflexões essa temática. As migrações assumem grande relevância no contexto contemporâneo dado ao impacto que causam as sociedades de origem e destino. O conjunto de questões sociais, econômicas e culturais que as migrações trazem à baila oferece aos pesquisadores e interessados um material rico e estimulante as reflexões. As “idas” e “vindas” dos migrantes apresenta-nos a relativização de perspectivas quando não a criação de novos espaços sociais de vida.

In this article, is reviewed the concept of ostipility (Derrida, 2000) in the light of material culture, food and related eating practices, and examine the links between food, belonging and commensality.
The participatory observation and the semi-structured interviews of this research made it possible to mark the boundaries of the Ballarò market, to identify the types of commercial activity, based on the “cooked” and / or “raw”, distinguish the inhabitants – immigrants and autochthonous – the different market areas are also the forms of “armed coexistence” taking place between the different groups.
In any case, is noted the pulsing umanity of a antithetical Lebenswelt to the processes of “delocalization” of hypermarkets and to “disembedding” (Polanyi, 1944; Anthony Giddens, 1991) of urban populations.

Questo articolo propone il concetto di ostipitalità (Derrida, 2000) per analizzare i collegamenti tra cibo, appartenenze e commensalità. L'osservazione partecipante e le interviste semi-strutturate permettono di individuare, nelle diverse aree e tra le tipologie di attività commerciali del mercato di Ballarò, le forme di "convivenza armata" fra autoctoni e migranti e di relativa prevalenza del "cotto" e/o del "crudo". Se il cibo cotto è ospitale a determinate condizioni, il cibo crudo ha maggiori probabilità di stabilire ostipitalità durevole oltre che condizionata. A Ballarò la prevalenza degli esercizi commerciali del crudo sembra costituire un freno rispetto alla delocalizzazione degli ipermercati e ai processi di disembedding tra economia e vita sociale urbana (Polanyi, 1944; Giddens, 1991).

O presente artigo, com caráter de ensaio, aborda de forma reflexiva, a relação entre imigração educação. Em concreto o texto tem como objetivo suscitar a necessidade de refletir sobre a importância do ensino da sociologia nas escolas com alunos imigrantes. O número de imigrantes no país vem crescendo nas duas últimas décadas e, consequentemente, também aumentou a entrada de crianças e adolescentes imigrantes no sistema educacional básico do país. Portanto, faz-se necessário pensar como a Sociologia com seus instrumentos conceituais, pedagógicos e metodológicos pode ser um locus para os alunos imigrantes e não-migrantes entenderem melhor as particularidades dos processos migratórios, suas motivações e consequências. Ademais, é relevante pensar como a disciplina de Sociologia pode contribuir para a integração sociocultural e para a socialização dos alunos imigrantes no seu novo contexto cultural. This research explores the transnational and dynamic connection between food, culture, and migration by examining the Syrian foodscapes in Istanbul's Fatih district-one of the most popular settlement areas for Syrian refugees in Türkiye-following the forced migration flows due to civil war in 2011. Migrations were always present in our human history, but conflicts and environmental changes are contributing to the increase in people's movements to and from different parts of the world. In this literature review, our focus is on the ethnobotany of food plants and migrations, and the adaptations following this process. We analyzed 58 studies dealing with human migrations and food plants, including both internal migrations and international ones, over a wide period from several centuries to the present but with the predominance of migrations since the second half of the twentieth century. Most studies reported migrations between countries or regions (80%) in which people search for better economic opportunities. Other reasons for migrations were refugees, mandatory displacements, and slavery. The studies included cultivated plants, gathered plants (foraged), and food plants purchased on markets or obtained via exchanges or importation. We discuss the identitarian role of food plants in the processes of maintenance, abandonment, replacement, and incorporation of plants; although the evidences of abandonment are the most difficult to track. After the migration, the maintenance of a food identity will depend on several variables, including how important it is to keep a distinct identity, the plant resources available, the people's agency of the plant resources, and also the reasons for each migratory movement. Finally, we discuss the implications of this ethnobotanical knowledge and practices related to food plants for sustainability.

Proyecto académico sin fines de lucro, desarrollado bajo la iniciativa de acceso abierto * * * Resumen Para analizar la temática propuesta en este trabajo, nos remitimos en primer término, al estudio de la organización familiar caboverdeana y de la ideología patriarcal que la sustenta en relación a la organización/formación social del archipiélago y su evolución, ya que se trata de una sociedad basada fundamentalmente en la vieja institución "escravócrata". Desarrollamos brevemente cuál fue el perfil de los primeros pobladores de las islas y la repercusión que ello tuvo en la configuración de la estructura social y en la emigración masiva de su población. En ese marco podrá entenderse el lugar de la mujer en la concepción caboverdeana de tradición mediterránea. Exploramos las nociones de machismo, virginidad y honra y su vinculación con el fenómeno de la emigración, para arribar finalmente a analizar la situación de la mujer caboverdeana en la Argentina, demarcando distintas etapas (desde su llegada hasta la actualidad), con especial énfasis en los cambios y el "interjuego ambivalente" entre "tradición" y "modernidad" que se producen en este particular contexto migratorio.

Social networks for Syrian migrants are of utmost importance because they struggle to build new lives in the metropolitan cities
almost completely relying on their own social networks and financial capital. The food businesses in Fatih emerge as distinct places where we can trace the ways in which Syrian migrants build/maintain or transform social bonds, shared identities, cultural traditions, socio-economic ties, daily-life habits, consumption-production patterns, etc.. However, these networks might also counteract as mechanisms of exclusion for Syrian migrants both hindering social cohesion with the receiving society and continuing the fellowship- kinship ties. My study offers field-driven discussion points to gain more insight into these intricate relationships among migrant foodways, socio-cultural integration and social networks.

Mankind, like Tennyson's Ulysses, has always roamed with a "hungry heart" (12), unable to endure the dullness that accompanies the "pause" (12), but the life of a wayfarer is often strewn with moments of homesickness. Therefore, whenever man navigated through the antique, uncharted territories to expand the horizons of his knowledge and reach, he brought with him flavours, spices, and recipes as a little memorabilia of the home and the self he had left behind. Since the familiar flavour and aroma of his native cuisine, in a land of new flavours, was potent enough to unleash a plethora of memories that would cocoon him in the warmth and comfort reminiscent of home. Like a water bearer's cracked pot, whose dripping water leaves a wet trail along the path he travels, the food, a traveller brings with him, also leaves a similar trail-the drifting aroma of his recipes permeates all the indigenous cuisines and cultures it encounters. Simultaneously, the exotic cuisines impact his palate; an impact he carries all the way back to his homeland. The curry too underwent similarly exciting adventures and experiences of culinary exchanges before it finally took its present shape and form.

Imigração brasileira contemporânea: discursos e práticas de imigrantes brasileiros em Londres. Este artigo discute como os migrantes brasileiros em Londres, que migraram com o projeto inicial de trabalhar, economizar e regressar, reformulam os seus objetivos após um tempo de estadia na sociedade recetora. O texto pretende compreender os limites apresentados pelos estudos migratórios brasileiros centrados no modelo teórico push-pull, os quais destacam fatores macroeconómicos como razões principais para definir a imigração brasileira. Por meio de observação participante e entrevistas, foi possível compreender de que forma esses migrantes, uma vez introduzidas novas prioridades nas suas vidas, redefinem os seus estilos de vida em Londres, deixando para segundo plano a ideia inicial de trabalhar/ganhar dinheiro/retornar. This article reflects on how Brazilians in London, who moved on the migratory project of working, saving money and return, readapt their aims after a period in the host society. Therefore, the text aims to understand the limits of analysis on Brazilian immigration based on the theoretical framework push-pull, which highlight economic reasons as the main points to define Brazilian migrants. Through participative observations and interviews, it was possible to comprehend how Brazilians once introduced new priorities in their lives, and thus reshape their lifestyle in London, their initial idea of working/saving money become somehow secondary.

Este texto tem como objetivo refletir sobre os dilemas da memória e esquecimento presentes em relatos de sujeitos históricos que vivenciaram a experiência do deslocamento forçado. Para tanto, recorremos às narrativas de uma imigrante de origem polonesa, cuja trajetória pessoal foi marcada, de modo irreversível, pela experiência do recrutamento compulsório, no contexto da Segunda Guerra mundial. O registro de sua história de vida resultou de uma longa entrevista realizada a partir da metodologia da história oral, na qual ela fornece importantes elementos para refletir sobre a potencialidade das narrativas autobiográficas no exercício de reconstrução do passado, cujas imagens e representações emergem, sempre mediados pela relação interativa e inseparável com o tempo presente, no movimento dialético entre a história e a memória, a lembrança e o esquecimento, o silêncio e a narratividade, o dito e o sentido.

Neste artigo, examino como a articulação entre identidade nacional, gênero e raça aparece no discurso de um grupo de brasileiros que fez seu doutorado no exterior. A partir da condição de ser estrangeiro em outro país, analiso como a identidade brasileira é percebida de forma marcada pelo gênero e pela raça, marcas estas vivenciadas de modo ambíguo. Em particular, procuro compreender o que significa afirmar, como a maioria fez, que eles não têm “aparência” de brasileiro. Em termos teóricos, está em questão a dimensão contrastiva na elaboração das identidades nacionais e o modo como o gênero e a raça são constitutivos de um tipo nacional.

The localization of cuticular wax (CW) on the leaf epidermis and its interaction with the physiological mechanisms of three edible aroids, Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma, were assessed. CW in the leaf tissues was visualized using scanning electron microscopy, which was higher in Colocasia (10.61 mg·dm−2) and Xanthosoma (11.36 mg·dm−2) than in Alocasia (1.36 mg·dm−2). Colocasia CW exhibited superhydrophobic properties with a higher static contact angle (CA) (>150°) than Xanthosoma (99.0°) and Alocasia (128.7°). The higher CW in Colocasia and Xanthosoma resulted in better leaf chlorophyll stability, moisture retention ability, and cellular membrane integrity compared to Alocasia. CW acted as a protecting barrier against deleterious solar radiation in terms of sun protection factor (SPF). The glossy appearance of wax crystals in the Alocasia leaf cuticles resulted in higher SPF. Overall, Colocasia CW highly influenced the qualitative and protective mechanisms of the leaf. Our s...

O presente artigo visa analisar as memórias de uma trajetória de vida de uma imigrante nascida no Paraguai, mas atualmente de nacionalidade brasileira e residente no município de Santa Terezinha de Itaipu, Paraná. Trabalharemos a trajetória considerando desde o seu ponto de partida e mobilidades no Paraguai, emigrações temporárias à Áustria, até sua emigração e estabelecimento no Brasil, buscando identificar o papel das redes sociais e a agência da mulher no trabalho em diferentes setores. Partimos de uma teorização breve sobre a memória e rede para, após, em uma descrição um pouco mais empírica, situar a sua trajetória. A metodologia utilizada é a história oral, na modalidade de história de vida. Por meio desta trajetória identificamos motivações presentes nas mobilidades, como o desejo de ser proprietário de terra, a perda violenta de um membro da família, desavenças familiares, busca por novas oportunidades de trabalho, experiências de vida e a busca pela saúde dos dependentes, mostrando que o fator econômico nem sempre é preponderante para emigrar.
