Ottoman History

The oldest known caricatures of Ottoman humour press in Istanbul were published in Zuarchakhos 'Joker' (1856), an Armeno-Turkish humour gazette written in Turkish using Armenian script. It is also the oldest known humour gazette in Turkish. This gazette and its Armenian contemporary Meghu 'Bee' (1856) are the only known examples before the 1870s, when humour periodicals in Turkish using Ottoman Turkish script first appeared. The discourse of morality and normative caricatures featured in the Ottoman humour press in early 1870s. This phenomenon can be traced back to Zuarchakhos with many continuities. This article questions how subversive and satirical these first caricatures were, focusing on those featured in Zuarchakhos and two other gazettes in Ottoman Turkish language and script-Latife 'Joke' (1874) and Tiyatro 'Theatre' (1874)-all published by Ottoman Armenians. In doing so, this study explores what morality meant in this context, taking these caricatures as discursive formations. It could be suggested that morality was instrumentalised by the government to silence satire and political opposition and that humour gazettes in turn resorted to morality to push the boundaries of censorship. Alafranga was one popular topic shared by all three gazettes in question. At another level, this study seeks to contribute to the integration of the little-studied Armeno-Turkish humour press into Ottoman historiography.

This article examines the role of Polish political émigrés in Ottoman reform during the Tanzimat era, focusing on their involvement in the construction and maintenance of imperial infrastructure. Rendered stateless by the partitions of Poland-Lithuania, Polish émigrés entered Ottoman service as engineers, agronomists and technical administrators at a moment of intense geopolitical rivalry and administrative transformation. Drawing on microhistorical and biographical analysis, the article explores how exile could function not only as a condition of displacement but as a platform for imperial agency. By tracing the everyday practices of infrastructure-building-from telegraph lines to roads and agricultural projects-the study highlights the entanglement of migration, expertise and empire, and invites a reconsideration of how modern imperial governance relied on intermediaries from Europe's political margins. This chapter outlines the circumstances that led to a surge in efforts to reform ḥadı ̄th in the modern era and examines the three primary approaches that emerged. It begins with Quranists, who completely reject the authority of ḥadı ̄th and only follow the Qurʾa ̄n. Next, it discusses Modernists, who do not dismiss ḥadı ̄th completely but assign them a secondary role, particularly when a narration appears to con ict with modern sensibilities or Western norms. The chapter then turns to its main focus: modern ḥadı ̄th scholars pursuing reform through a rigorous return to the traditional science of ḥadı ̄th. Speci cally, it explores the in uence of Muḥammad Na ̄ṣir al-Dı ̄n al-Alba ̄nı ̄ (d. 1999), the controversial Sala scholar, on ḥadı ̄th studies. Over the past two centuries, the world has witnessed abrupt and drastic changes. Although change impacted the premodern world, nothing was as disruptive as the experience of modernity. Mass communication, technological developments, scienti c discoveries, industrialization, and globalization have impacted all facets of life, including religion and scriptural interpretation. Most of these developments occurred in the West, while the Muslim world witnessed the fall of the Caliphate, colonization, and Westernization. These transformations did not emerge organically from within the Muslim world but were imposed by colonial powers. This led many Muslims to question why they fell behind the West, which was undeniably more advanced technologically and economically. The notion that Islam or Muslims require reform is itself a product of colonial in uence. Many of the challenges faced by Muslim societies were primarily political and socioeconomic rather than religious in 1

The authenticity and dating of the Trojan War (while some scholars and other individuals question that there ever was a Trojan War) have been of great controversy. This author's published book, The Landmark Achilles, clearly documents the numerous wars and hostilities occurring in the Late Bronze Age, specifically the 220-year period 1430 to 1210 BC, as identified in The Ahhiyawa Texts. From that and writings of other archaeologists and scholars, there clearly were battles at Troy with the dating of Homer's war principally narrowed to 1260 to 1180 BC. Greek scientists have through their published works shown 1218 BC as the ending of that war. This is based on solar eclipses they identified in both THE ILIAD and THE ODYSSEY as derived from the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Catalog. With The Ahhiyawa Texts identifying a war at Troy with the Greeks ca. 1250 BC, initiated by the Hittites, as well as hostilities over some two centuries by Greek and Anatolian kingdoms, analysis of the leadership of these centralized economies and the dynamic conditions of the Eastern Mediterranean at that time lead to the conclusion that the Greeks sought revenge against the warring Hittites and their Trojan allies, revenge targeted during a period of Hittite weakness. This is discussed in The Landmark Achilles. The year 1228 BC as the beginning of the war with 1218 BC as its ending fits well with that timetable. Further detailed analysis points to Homer's ILIAD in the 10 th year of that war beginning 9 May 1218 BC with the sack of Troy occurring 15 July 1218 BC.

Bu çalışma, hanedan dışı iki yönetici olan Konstantin Tih Asen (1257-1277) ve İvaylo (1277-1280) dönemlerinde Bulgar-Bizans ilişkilerini meşruiyet krizi ve diplomatik stratejiler bağlamında incelemektedir. Üsküp Valisi olan Konstantin Tih'in tahta çıkışı, Asen hanedanı dışında bir yöneticinin boyarların desteğiyle iktidara gelmesi bakımından dikkat çekicidir. Konstantin Tih Asen dönemi, İkinci Bulgar Devleti'nin Bizans İmparatorluğu ile ilişkilerinin karmaşık ve dinamik seyir izlediği bir dönemdir. Bu dönemde, Bulgaristan'ın siyasi ve askeri konumu, Bizans'ın iç çalkantıları ve bölgesel güç mücadeleleriyle şekillenmiştir. Meşruiyetini güçlendirmek için hanedan evliliklerine ve Bizans karşıtı ittifaklara başvurmuş, ancak Altın Orda, Macarlar ve Bizans karşısında kalıcı bir başarı sağlayamamıştır. İvaylo'nun köylü tabanlı hareketi ise ekonomik baskılar, feodal parçalanma ve Tatar istilalarının yarattığı kriz ortamında yükselmiş; hanedan dışı ikinci yönetim deneyimi olarak siyasi düzende önemli bir kırılma noktası oluşturmuştur. Bu dönemde Bizans, diplomatik müdahalelerle Bulgaristan'daki taht mücadelelerini yönlendirmiş ve Balkan siyasetinde belirleyici rolünü sürdürmüştür. Çalışma, hanedan dışı yönetimlerin sınırlılıklarını, meşruiyet arayışlarının diplomasiye nasıl yansıdığını ve toplumsal hareketlerin devlet yapısını nasıl dönüştürdüğünü ortaya koymaktadır. Böylece Konstantin Tih Asen ve İvaylo dönemleri, yalnızca Bulgar-Bizans ilişkileri bağlamında değil, aynı zamanda Ortaçağ Balkan siyasetindeki kırılgan güç dengelerinin anlaşılması açısından da kritik öneme sahiptir.

Clément Ader’in on dokuzuncu yüzyılın sonundaki icadı théâtrophone ile başlatılabilecek tiyatronun dinlenmesi fikri, radyonun icat edilmesiyle geniş kitlelere ulaşan bir eğlence aracına dönüşmüştür. Söz konusu işitsel araçlardan özellikle radyo sayesinde tiyatro sanatı başta mekân olmak üzere bazı sınırlılıklardan sıyrılmış dinleyicinin zihninde var olan bir hayali mekâna kavuşmuştur. Türkiye’de 1927’den itibaren kullanılmaya başlayan radyonun yayın repertuarında ilk andan itibaren sesli öyküler ve radyo tiyatrosu yerini almıştır. Radyo tiyatrosuna yönelik oyunların doğrudan bu türde yazılıp yayınlanan oyunlar olmasının yanında bir romandan bir öyküden yapılan uyarlamalar şeklinde olduğu da görülmektedir. Yeni bir oyun yazmak kadar zor olan uyarlama eyleminin belli kriterler çerçevesinde yapılması gerekmektedir. Bu noktada uyarlama kuramına dair kaynaklar, bir uyarlamanın nasıl ve ne şekilde yapılacağını açıklamaktadır. Metinlerarasılığın alt dallarından biri olarak değerlendirilen uyarlama, metinlerarasılığın dönüştürüm ilkeleri çerçevesinde de ele alınabilmektedir. Adı geçen yöntemlerle uyarlamanın kuramsal çerçevesi çizilmiş, bir eserin incelenebilmesi için dikkat edilmesi gereken hususlar belirlenmiştir. Bu çalışmada uyarlama kapsamındaki diğer çalışmalardan farklı olarak romandan tiyatroya yapılan bir uyarlamayı incelemek yerine romandan radyo tiyatrosuna yapılan bir uyarlama örneği tercih edilmiştir. Söz konusu uyarlamanın kendine özgü özellikleri ve farklılıklarına yönelinmiştir. Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar Hakka Sığındık adlı romanının Orhan Hançerlioğlu tarafından yapılan radyo tiyatrosu uyarlaması bu bağlamda değerlendirilmiştir. Bir romandan radyo tiyatrosuna yapılan uyarlamanın öne çıkan yönlerinin yanında romandan tiyatroya yapılan uyarlamalar arasındaki farklılıklarına da değinilmiştir. Kaynak eser olan Hakka Sığındık romanı ile uyarlama radyo oyunu arasındaki değişim; anlatıcı, kişiler, mekân, zaman, diyalog ve efektler açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışma kapsamında uyarlamalara ilişkin yapılan diğer çalışmalardan farklı olarak romandan tiyatroya yapılan uyarlama örneğinin yerine romandan radyo tiyatrosuna yapılan bir uyarlama örneğine odaklanılmıştır.

Mîlâdî IX. Yüzyıldan itibaren eğitim nazariyesine dair meseleler, gerek farklı türlerdeki eserler içerisinde dolaylı biçimde gerekse müstakil olarak kaleme alınmaya başlanmış; bu noktada mîladî XII. Yüzyılın sonlarında Zernûci tarafından kaleme alınan Ta'lîmü'l-Müte'allim adlı eser, İslam telif geleneğinde dolaşım ve yayılımı bakımından önemli bir konumda kendisini göstermiştir. Söz konusu metin, önemine binaen, İstanbul Medeniyet Üniversitesi Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü öğretim üyelerinden Sadık Yazar'ın yürütücülüğünü üstlendiği "Eğitim Teorisi Konusunda Kanonik Bir Metin Olarak Ta'lîmü'l-Müte'allim'in Osmanlı Telif ve Tedris Geleneğindeki Etkisi ve Dolaşımı" başlığını taşıyan bir TÜBİTAK 1001 projesine konu edilmiş; projenin ilk çıktıları 14 Şubat 2026 tarihinde "Ta'lîmü'l-Müte'allim'in İslâm Telif Geleneğindeki Etkisi" başlıklı bir çalıştay kapsamında bilim insanlarının değerlendirme ve eleştirilerine sunulmuştur. William Lane Craig ve J. P. Moreland'in derlediği Naturalism: A Critical Analysis, çağdaş analitik felsefenin baskın konumlarından biri olan natüralizmi sistematik bir incelemeye tabi tutar. Natüralizm, gerçekliğin yalnızca doğal dünyadan ibaret olduğunu ve doğaüstü hiçbir varlığın bulunmadığını savunan kapsamlı bir görüştür. Kitap, bu görüşün ontolojik ve metodolojik biçimlerini ayırt ederek bilinç, yönelmişlik, ahlaki olgular ve aklın güvenilirliği gibi alanların salt doğalcı bir çerçeveye sığıp sığmadığını farklı yazarların katkılarıyla tartışır. On bölümden oluşan eserin Türkçe çevirisi on ayrı çevirmenin ortak emeğiyle tamamlandı. This is an ethnographic study of Hamdi Ahmed Abdullah, aged fourty-five, from Cairo in Egypt. The task was to examine his artwork, through a relationship with him as a person as well as his background or 'life-world', which has encompassed ancient Egyptian symbolism, historical, social and political events and a grasp of the artist's personality. It took the form of four interviews which initially setyp the task, and subsequent interviews builtyp a relationship of trust and mutualilnterest which lead to an in depth understanding of the work. The approach and analysis of these interviews are related in detail in Appendix I.

Following up on last year’s round table organized by the Balkan Studies Research Unit and focusing on the rich collections from archives of Roman Catholic institutions – such as the Congregation of Propaganda Fide, the Holy Office, and the Society of Jesus –, this round table aims to put sources drawn from regional archives in the center of the study of the confessional and religious history of the Balkans. Researchers working on different regions, themes, and time periods will bring together their experience with such archives, shedding light on their potential for future research, but also problematizing archival silences and difficulties in accessing collections.
From the Aegean archipelago to the Banat, from Sofia to Budapest, from Dubrovnik to Bosnian monasteries, the participants will discuss how to connect sources from different – and at times unexpected – places within a unified analytical framework.
The round table thus aims to foster dialogue on integrating local archival material more fully into the study of Catholic and other confessional and religious groups – Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, Armenian – in the Ottoman and non-Ottoman Balkans.

Spanning vast territories and encompassing diverse ethnic, religious, and social groups, the Ottoman context reveals how this fundamental human relationship operated across religious, spatial, social, cultural, professional, and emotional dimensions simultaneously. Beyond the theoretically prescribed affiliations of legal classifications and social norms, factors like spatial proximity, individual career choices, and dependencies emerged as crucial markers. The fluidity of identity within this complex, multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multilingual society is a key finding. The contributors demonstrate that while proximity fostered strong bonds of solidarity and shaped social hierarchy, belonging itself was often a fragile and volatile experience for both individuals and groups. Veruschka Wagner is a Research Associate at the Department for Islamic Studies and Middle-Eastern Languages at the University of Bonn and Affiliated Researcher of the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS). Her research focuses primarily on Ottoman slavery and dependencies, as well as late Ottoman and early Republican satire and caricatures. This article examines the functioning and consolidation of the Turkish reserve officer system, as well as its social significance, during the Second World War. While Turkey remained officially non-belligerent, prolonged partial mobilization and rapid military expansion generated an acute shortage of officers, making reserve officers indispensable. Building on the late Ottoman legacy, the Republican regime consolidated the system institutionally and ideologically, integrating educated men into the army as both conscripts and officers. Drawing on archival documents, legislation, press coverage, and memoirs, the study analyzes how reserve officership functioned simultaneously as a practical manpower solution and as a symbolic instrument of the militarist ‘nation-in-arms’ ideal. The article also highlights the system’s limits, particularly regarding discriminatory practices towards non-Muslim citizens. By focusing on lived experiences and memory, it demonstrates how reserve officers navigated their dual status between command and conscription, revealing the complex entanglement of military mobilization, citizenship, and ideology in wartime Turkey.

As cousins, we discovered a treasure trove of family papers revealing the intricate relationship between precarity and privilege for our family from Salonica as they navigated the post-Ottoman transition. Recognising the potential of family history to provide a more intimate and complex historiography, this article offers our initial study of these family papers. By highlighting the challenges posed by the scarcity of such documents in Middle Eastern studies, emphasising women’s roles in preserving family memory and focussing on the interplay between personal and political domains, we identify the preparation of a family tree as a gendered and socioeconomic project of preserving the past and shaping the present. By tracing our family's origins, including unsettling discoveries, we address matters of identity and memory before embarking on our analysis. By reconstructing the biographies of two generations, we characterise the family’s socioeconomic struggle to sustain their precarious privilege amid shifting frontiers and along their journey from Ottoman Salonica to Kemalist Turkey. Ultimately, this article underscores the significance of family history as a transnational, intergenerational, intersectional and social history that enriches our understanding of the post-Ottoman transition through the lives of ordinary (and some extraordinary) Ottomans.

Selimiye Mosque in Edirne created by the ever-talented Mimar Sinan. It was considered by Sinan to be his masterpiece and is one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture Today, the classic art of Islamic patterns has gone beyond borders, and they are heavily utilized all around the world. Still, people want to draw these patterns by hand with a pencil in a traditional way. Architects of the Islamic world had a long history of using mathematics in architecture. More than 1000 years ago, Muslim scholars and artists, especially in the Baghdad area, created an alternative form of decoration using only the basic tools of Euclid, namely the compass and the straight edge. We call them Islamic geometric patterns because they have a lot of mathematics in the structure. Still, geometric designs were used significantly in Islamic art. Since the depiction of humans and animal figures is not part of Islamic culture, Muslim artists used geometrical shapes and calligraphy to make repeated patterns as a form of decorative art. Furthermore, Islam had its own Michelangelo, Mimar Sinan, who was the best architect and civil engineer in the Ottoman Empire. This great architect was the mastermind behind 300 plus classical Ottoman structures. He was referred to as Euclid of his time because of his mastery of geometry. Bu editoryal yazı, hayvan tarihinin metodolojisi, sınırları ve olanakları hakkında bilgi vermenin yanısıra hayvan tarihinin Osmanlı-Türkiye tarihyazımındaki gelişmini özetliyor ve Toplumsal Tarih Akademi Hayvan Tarihi özel sayısının içeriğini kısaca aktarıyor.

Zootekni, yani evcil hayvanların ırklarının ıslahı, üretilmesi, yetiştirilmesi ve yaygınlaştırılması, erken Cumhuriyet döneminde modernleşme ve ulus inşa süreçlerinin kırsal alanda yayılması ve benimsenmesi çabalarındaki önemli araçlardan biriydi. Kemalist rejim, zootekni pratikleriyle iktisadi milliyetçilik ve devletçilik ideallerini bir biçimde bir araya getirmiş, iktisat, sanayi, nüfus, halk sağlığı gibi konulardaki çeşitli "dava"larla zootekni arasında bir bağlantı kurmaya çalışmıştı. Erken Cumhuriyet yöneticileri, zootekniden faydalanarak hayvan varlığını kontrol altına alma, hayvanlar üzerinde daha fazla tahakküm kurma ve hayvanlardan alınan verimi artırmanın yanında hayvanları toplumun kimlik ve aidiyet duygularını pekiştirmede birer ideolojik aygıt ve propaganda aracı olarak yeniden tanımlamaya çabalamıştı.

Analysis of the Advice Suggested to İskender in Ahmedi's İskender-name in Terms of Values Education

Ahmedî, one of the founding and reflective poets of classical Turkish literature, is one of the leading Ottoman poets of XIV century Turkish literature. The first verse written in Turkish literature belongs to İskendernâme Ahmedî. Iskender-name, although shaped around many subjects, has equipment that can be considered as a set of values. In this study, "Iskender-nâme", which is an example of policy and advice, as well as many features, was examined in terms of values education and it was aimed to carry people to a higher level.

In this thesis, the human values in Ahmedî's work called İskender-nâme have been examined through İskender. In order for the study to sit on a consistent basis and increase its comprehensibility, the concept of value is primarily emphasized. The aim of this study was to examine the work named "Iskender-nâme" within the scope of managerial values and to highlight the qualities necessary for the image of "human". The study started with an "introduction" aiming to dominate the content of the thesis such as "introduction, necessity, purpose, importance, limitation, method, data collection.

The study consists of six parts. In the first part of the study, the concept of moral value was examined. In the second part, Ahmadi' In the third chapter, information about the life, literary personality and works of Alexander is given, and in the third chapter, the life, personality and works written about Alexander are examined.In the fourth and fifth chapters, which are the main subjects of the study, a brief summary of Ahmedi's "Iskender-nâme" is given. Values such as "thankfulness, patience, smiling face and gentleness, generosity, knowledge, arrogance..." presented to.

Introduction

The exhibition surrounding the Grand Staircase of Paleis Het Loo, opened in April 2026, represents an interesting attempt to place an iconic element of the palace within a new historical perspective. Through its art-historical approach and its references to contacts between the Dutch Republic under Stadtholder William III and the Ottoman Empire, the exhibition appears at first glance to align with the ambitions of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science as expressed in its Agenda Against Discrimination and Racism. This policy explicitly advocates greater plurality of voices, the representation of diverse perspectives, and the inclusion of different audiences in the cultural heritage of the Netherlands.

Yet, in several crucial respects, the exhibition falls short of these ambitions and raises fundamental questions concerning perspective, depth, and museological courage.

Following a short essay that I previously published on this subject, Forgotten Staircase (https://www.academia.edu/165835270/Forgotten_staircase), in which I outlined my objections to the concept, I was invited by Paleis Het Loo shortly after the exhibition’s opening to elaborate on my concerns and discuss the existing differences of opinion. During two meetings with several senior staff members—including the Head of Collections, the Head of Programming, and the Head of Public Relations—I presented my views in detail. Despite these exchanges, however, the differences in interpretation remained unresolved.

Paleis Het Loo ultimately chose to maintain its original concept and rejected my proposal to give a public lecture in which I could present my alternative interpretation.

Because these disagreements touch upon fundamental questions regarding the way museums and other state institutions engage with the history of what is now the Netherlands—questions comparable to the broader societal debates surrounding slavery—I have decided to make these concerns public. This is not intended as criticism of individual staff members, who appear to be implementing an established institutional policy from which they are not permitted to deviate.

Modern telecommunications took shape in the nineteenth century with the emergence of the electric telegraph and its expansion across wide geographies through land lines and submarine cables, fundamentally transforming communication, administration, and warfare. At the beginning of the twentieth century, wireless telegraphy introduced a new technological regime that disrupted established cable networks and reconfigured the strategic balance of global communications, expanding the military, competitive, and intelligence-related dimensions of communication. This article examines the global rise and strategic implications of wireless telegraphy, together with the Ottoman Empire's practices of adopting and employing this new technology. While the Ottoman state embraced wireless telegraphy for military, administrative, and maritime purposes, it also increasingly perceived the technology as a security risk due to its potential use in espionage. In response, a detailed guide was prepared to detect clandestine wireless installations. Drawing on extensive Ottoman and British archival sources, the study employs a historical international relations methodology to analyze wireless telegraphy within the intersecting domains of technology, imperial rivalry, internal security, and state governance, thereby contributing to the existing literature.

The contemporary meaning of street music in Istanbul, from the 1980s onwards, emerged within a context of accelerated globalization and hegemonic struggles over urban public space. Before this period, the term was rarely used or lacked its current meaning. As a result, earlier street music practices are often overlooked or inconsistently classified. Today, some performances on streets are not considered street music, while some classified as such do not occur on streets. This study, rather than offering a normative definition, primarily aims to trace the discourses of street music and situate the discourses and practices within their historical context.

The dissertation begins with a semiotic analysis of expressions containing "street" in the TDK Dictionary, Kubbealtı Lugatı, and Ötüken Turkish Dictionary, and examination of the modes of exchange that characterize street music, followed by a review of historical chronicles, eyewitness accounts, news articles, fictional works, and academic studies on street music. Ethnographic fieldwork, including observations, unstructured and semi-structured interviews, was conducted. Using categorical content analysis, collected sources were analyzed by identifying relevant expressions, grouping them into categories and themes, and interpreting them in relation to the research questions.

The historical analysis identifies various socio-historical contexts and performers of street music, revealing three dominant historical discourses: the street musician as a wandering urban folk artist, as a member of a low-status group, and as an outsider. The contemporary analysis identifies diverse venues and performers of street music, revealing five dominant contemporary discourses: the street musician as a traveler, as a member of a low-status group, street music as a marginal lifestyle and subculture, street music as a counter-hegemonic political discourse, and the gentrification and taming of street music.

In the context of achievements in the social sciences and humanities in the study of a not only
negative historical past of the aristocracy, inspiring intellectual commitments to deepen the
understanding and comprehension of the processes and phenomena of the 19th century, which
changed the world, and whose legacy remains difficult to assimilate even today, the current
round table seeks to fill gaps in studies of the Balkans, turning its attention to the importance of
classes that have long shaped its history: the aristocrats and the meritocrats. Given that the
Balkans and the Black Sea region have historically functioned as a crossroads of empires,
cultures and political models, where the concepts of hereditary power (aristocracy) and
belonging to the elite based on personal merit and abilities (meritocracy) constantly intertwine,
predetermine and interact, the organizers of this conference have the ambition to encourage,
among others, discussions in search of answers to the question: To what extent do contemporary
societies in the region succeed in building working meritocratic systems or rather reproduce new
forms of closed, privileged elites?

Türkiye' de yaşayan Ermeniler, Cumhuriyet döneminde (1923-1945) ciddi anlamda zararlı bir faaliyet içerisinde olmamıştır. Aksine bazı olaylar karşısında olumlu tavır takınmışlardır. Bu dönemde başta Atatürk olmak üzere birçok Türk devlet adamına yapılan suikast girişimlerinde içerideki Ermenilerden ziyade dışarıdaki Ermenilerin rollerinin olduğu görülmüştür. Cumhuriyet ilân edildikten sonra ülkedeki bütün vatandaşlar için yeni bir dönem başlamış, "millet sistemi"ne son verilerek, "ulus devlet" ve "vatandaşlık" sistemine geçilmiştir. Cumhuriyet rejimi, Ermeniler için dîni ihtiyaçları karşılamanın yanında, sosyal ve eğitim alanında da kendi gelenek ve göreneklerine uygun bir şekilde ihtiyaçlarını karşılayabilecekleri bir ortamı sağlamıştır. Ermenilerin Cumhuriyet döneminde Türk toplumu ile entegre olma gayretleri farklı şekillerde hızla devam etmiştir. Cumhuriyet döneminde Ermeni asıllı yurttaşlar Türk kültürüne, sanatına ve basın yayın hayatına önemli katkılar yapmıştır. Bu dönemde Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi'nde görev alan Ermeni Milletvekilleri pek çok konuda çalışmalar yapmış, kanun teklifleri hazırlamış ve soru önergeleri vermiştir. Türkiye' de yaşayan Ermenilerin büyük çoğunluğu 1923-1945 döneminde devletin aleyhine olacak tavırlar içerisine girmemiş ve ülkede yaşayan diğer vatandaşlar gibi üzerine düşen sorumlulukları yerine getirerek ülkenin gelişmesine ve kalkınmasına önemli katkılar yapmıştır.

Amaç: Bu makale, Osmanlı Devleti’nin son döneminin en önemli tıpçılarından Doktor Besim Ömer’in (Akalın) kaleme almış olduğu
“Çocuk” adlı esere odaklanmaktadır. Çalışmada, kitabın içeriğinden hareketle XIX. yüzyılın sonlarında çocuk sağlığı ve Besim Ömer’in
konu hakkındaki değerlendirmelerine dair özgün verilerin sunulması amaçlanmıştır. 
Yöntem: Makalenin ana kaynağını Dr. Besim Ömer’in “Çocuk” adlı kitabı teşkil etmektedir. Ayrıca yazarın anne ve çocuk sağlığı
konusuna verdiği önem ile özel ve mesleki hayatını şekillendiren ilmi kişiliği süreli yayınlar, arşiv vesikaları ile mevcut literatür
üzerinden ele alınmıştır. Elde edilen veriler döküman analizi yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiştir. 
Bulgular: Rumi 1309 (1892-1893) yılında basılan kitapta çocuklarla ilgili çeşitli bölümler altında birçok konuya değinilmiştir. Servet-i
Fünûn’da dizi halinde yayımlanan bu bölümlerin bir araya getirilip bazı resimlerle zenginleştirilmesiyle bastırılmış olan eserde,
çocukların beslenmesi, sütten kesilmesi, yakalandıkları muhtemel bazı hastalıklar ve genel gelişim süreçleri gibi konular işlenmiştir. 
Sonuç: Eser yazıldığı dönemde ebeveynler, bilhassa anneler ve hekimler için bir başvuru kaynağı olarak tasarlanmıştır. Yazar
çocukların sağlıklı yetiştirilebilmesi adına eseri kaleme almıştır. Eserin ön sözündeki “ömr-i beşerin erken zamanı çocukluktur”
ifadesiyle, Besim Ömer, çocukların geleceğin yetişkinleri olduğunu vurgulamakta, sağlıklı nesillerin yetiştirilmesinin çocuk sağlığına
ehemmiyet verilmesine bağlı olduğuna güçlü bir referansta bulunmaktadır.
