The article analyses double and triple age records of individuals in papyrus documents from Egypt related to the Roman census, including census registers and extracts from them. Some of these records contain discrepancies in the reported age of the same individuals. The consistent patterns observed can only be explained by verification and subsequent correction by officials. This administrative practice of verifying the demographic data in census declarations was implemented by the Roman state to ensure that no male individual evaded paying the poll tax to the fiscus during the entire taxation period-from the age of 14 until 62. The evidence suggests that this verification was conducted in person.

Publication of a set of blocks that were once part of the southern outer wall of the temple of Montu in Tod. Le présent volume réunit cinq contributions qui proposent différentes approches des théologies thébaines tardives. Au cœur des cultes de Djémê, l’Ogdoade fait l’objet d’une étude à partir du riche corpus des inscriptions d’époque romaine de Medinet Habou. L’aspect taurin du Montou-Rê est mis à l’honneur, grâce à la traduction commentée de l’hymne gravé sur le propylône de Karnak-Nord et à la présentation d’une scène fragmentaire de Tôd figurant le très grand taureau vénérable de Médamoud. Ces cultes thébains relativement bien documentés contrastent avec des cultes « secondaires », tel celui consacré à un « lion vivant » en lien avec le dieu Mahès vénéré à Karnak-Sud. L’érudition des prêtres thébains est mise en évidence par l’étude d’un papyrus contenant un Document premier de respiration d’époque romaine.

The paper considers the specific problem of the land property outside
Italy in the Roman provinces during the period of the late Roman Republic and the early Principate. The author studies how the Roman government faced the new problems that the conquest created and what Rome actually did when first met the Hellenistic concepts of the land property in the conquered territories and how they were applied or modified
according to the traditional Roman law principles and regulations. It is emphasized that the need to organize the territory and to define the property of the people who lived on that territory or the rights which they had to the land for a very first time occurred in Sicily which the Romans organized as the first Roman provincia. The article examines the
organization of Sicily according to Lex Hieronica, it considers the exemptions and immunities of some cities from the general legal regime of the province, and studies the collection of public revenues and the payments for the taxes for the exploitation of the land – vectigal et vectigalia publica. Key notions and terms like possessio, dominium,
mancipatio, vectigal, vectigalia, tributum, stipendium are cleared and special attention is paid to the correct use of the Latin legal terminology. Some of the most important fragments from the Institutes of Gaius about the provincial property are examined and is made a carefully study of his language and the legal aspects of his consideration of the
rights that the individuals had over the provincial lands. The research presents in details the organization of other provinces in the late Roman Republic and the early Principate and deals with the richest Roman province – Asia, which brings huge revenues to the
Roman budget. Central part of the study is dedicated to the legal regime of the provincial land and the author considers the main opinions on this topic in the recent Roman legal doctrine and translates and analyzes the relevant classical Latin texts in the sources and provides an important bibliography on the problem, he tries also to define the Roman concept for „provincial property“ which for sure was not identical with the dominium ex iure Quiritium in Italy.

During the Roman Republic, Roman magistrates acted as censors,
who entered into contractual activity with private entities of the societates
publicanorum, which ultimately produced credits for the civitas Romana. The consequence was that the payments which supplied the cash flows of the government were determined through the activity of the censors as Roman magistrates. The strategy of the Roman fiscal policy may be synthesized by the fragment of Liv.39.44.7: "… et vectigaliasummispretiis, ultrotributainfimislocaverunt". Based on this fact, we may conclude that these ultro tributa were the subject matter of a contract, where the locator was the Roman State through its censors and the conductor were the societates publicanorum, which exercised their duties towards the SPQR. The aim of this article is to outline the significance of the societates publicanorum in the period of the Roman Republic as a remedy for the decentralization of public finances. Also, the Roman Republic practices of public building and services accomplished on contractual basis by private subjects with the money of the State are widely accepted nowadays within the modern institute of public-private partnership.

The article is a first step in the course of a research on the vocabulary of cash taxes attested in Roman Egypt. It starts with an attempt to categorize the attested names of taxes according to the semantic types of their eponymous elements, followed by a prospect of some denominations of important tax categories. A couple of examples will show the set of problems caused by lexical variation in the appellation of some taxes and by homonymies of diverse imposts. In conclusion the contribution analyzes a couple of significant or for certain reasons interesting denominations which offer occasions for further lexical considerations.

Die Herrschaft des Herakleios (610–641) zeichnet sich durch eine Reihe von Krisen und unerwarteten Triumphen für den oströmisch-byzantinischen Staat aus. Die Untersuchung fragt (1) nach der Gewichtung von Krisen und Katastrophen durch die Zeitgenossen, (2) nach den Maßnahmen zur Generierung wirtschaftlicher, militärischer, ideologischer und personeller Resilienzressourcen zur Überwindung staatlicher Vulnerabilitäten sowie (3) nach den kurz-, mittel- und langfristigen Folgen dieser Handlungen für den oströmisch-byzantinischen Staat. Es zeigt sich, dass es dem Regenten unter Ausnutzung noch funktionierender Herrschafts- und Verwaltungsstrukturen gelang, den Angriffen der Perser zu trotzen. Die anschließende Siegeseuphorie ob des wundersam anmutenden Sieges, die in der kaiserlichen Selbstinszenierung zusätzlich überhöht wurde, trug dann aber wesentlich dazu bei, dass der plötzliche Aufstieg der Muslime nicht rechtzeitig registriert wurde. Kurzfristig erfolgreiche Resilienzmaßnahmen führten damit mittel- und langfristig zu neuen Vulnerabilitäten für das Reich.

Dio is an interesting, complex and in many respects ambiguous character. His life was marked by a series of significant events, such as his stay at the imperial court and the long exile from Bithynia and Italy following Domitian's order -a traumatic experience which compelled Dio to travel extensively in Greece and Asia Minor before his rehabilitation under Nerva. 1 Dio's works, philosophical activity and political life have been intensively discussed in past and recent scholarship, starting with the fundamental study by Hans von Arnim, then later in the wake of the influential works of Paolo Desideri, Christopher P. Jones, Simon Swain, and Giovanni Salmeri, until more recent studies. 2 Nonetheless, one aspect has so far received less attention as compared to other aspects of Dio's activity and career, namely the discourse of competition and corruption that

Après les rencontres de Bordeaux (juin 2023) et de Paris (novembre 2024), respectivement consacrées aux cadres du métier puis aux mobilités des procurateurs impériaux dans la partie occidentale de l’Empire romain, le colloque conclusif du projet PROCURATÈLES est destiné à l’étude des rapports qu’entretenaient les procuratores avec leurs subalternes et avec les administrés - provinciaux, cités, communautés
infra-civiques, gentes - en tant que figure d’autorité et représentant du pouvoir impérial.
Les fonctions qui incombent aux différents procurateurs leurs confèrent une autorité
temporelle. Les procuratores mènent leurs activités au plus près des communautés, au coeur des réalités matérielles. Inauguration de monuments, restauration d’édifices publics, collecte de l’impôt, réception des requêtes pour l’empereur, maintien de l’ordre sont autant de tâches qui font des procurateurs, chacun à leur propre niveau, des agents en contact direct non seulement avec le personnel subalterne qui les accompagne dans leur activité mais également avec les populations présentes dans leur circonscription.
Les hommages publics rendus aux procurateurs apportent un éclairage sur les
relations d’amitié et les relations de clientèles qui pouvaient se nouer entre les procurateurs et leurs employés, entre les procurateurs et les administrés. Inversement, certains documents exposent les nomina martelés de ces agents, preuve parfois d’une réprobation locale.
Ces problématiques autour de la figure du bon et du mauvais administrateur
permettent d’aborder la question des procuratèles de point de vue de l’histoire des représentations en s’interrogeant sur les moyens auxquels avaient recours ces agents du pouvoir pour inscrire leurs actes et leur fonction dans le temps et dans l’espace. Si les procurateurs sont au plus près des administrés, les membres de leur familia n’en sont pas éloignés non plus. Les témoignages de respect envers les membres de leur parentèle impliquaient indirectement les procurateurs et avaient des répercussions sur leur image. La place qu’occupent les familles des procurateurs dans le cadre de leur activité et la façon dont elles peuvent être amenées à influencer positivement le déroulement d’une procuratèle seront analysées à l’aune des sources littéraires et épigraphiques.

L’administration romaine en Asie. Un monde d’archives ?
Un paysage documentaire fait de multiples nuances.

Cette enquête entend examiner plusieurs points. Il s’agit de dresser le constat de l’existence de personnels spécialisés dans la confection et la tenue d’archives aussi bien du proconsul que du procurateur de l’Asie ; d’examiner ensuite les possibilités d’informations et d’enquêtes en
matière d’archives dans une province hautement urbanisée, qui connaissait une justice basée sur le circuit des chefs-lieux de conventus par le proconsul et l’existence de copies épigraphiques de certains documents ; enfin de s’interroger sur l’absence apparente de types de documents existant dans d’autres provinces (ainsi pour le census). Il en résulte un tableau
complexe et un contraste de la qualité des informations disponibles.

Roman administration in Asia. A world of archives?
A documentary landscape with many nuances.

This study aims to examine several points. It will establish the existence of personnel specialized in the creation and maintenance of archives for both the proconsul and the procurator of Asia; it will then examine the possibilities for information and investigation in terms of archives in a highly urbanized province, which had a justice system based on the circuit of conventus capitals by the proconsul and the existence of epigraphic copies of certain
documents; and finally, to question the apparent absence of certain types of documents that exist in other provinces (such as the census). The result is a complex picture and a contrast in the quality of the information available.

Die römische Verwaltung in Asia. Eine Welt von Archiven?
Eine dokumentarische Landschaft mit vielfältigen Nuancen.

Diese Untersuchung befasst sich mit mehreren Punkten. Es geht darum, festzustellen, ob es sowohl beim Prokonsul als auch beim Prokurator von Asien Fachpersonal für die Erstellung und Führung von Archiven gab; anschließend sollen die Möglichkeiten für Informationen und
Untersuchungen im Bereich der Archiven in einer hoch urbanisierten Provinz geprüft werden, in der die Rechtsprechung durch den Prokonsul auf der Grundlage der der Conventus-Städte erfolgte, und wo auch epigraphische Kopien bestimmter Dokumente existierten; schließlich soll das offensichtliche Fehlen von Dokument-Typen, die es in anderen Provinzen gab (wie beispielsweise die census-Dokumente), hinterfragt werden. Daraus ergibt sich ein komplexes Bild und ein Kontrast in der Qualität der verfügbaren Informationen.

The seminar paper deals with the historiological presentation of ancient Illyricum during the period of Roman subjugation and political-territorial organization. The structure of the paper is determined unidirectionally following the socio-political conceptualism (geographical definition, national ethnicity, subordination to the Roman state structure, socio-territorial organization and certain cultural aspects) of the Illyrian kingdom in the area of ​​residence of the Illyrian tribes, among whom the most numerous groups were the Histri, Iapodes, Liburni and Delmati; whose national etymology influenced the phonology of the territorial organization of the provincial districts of the kingdom. A more significant distinctive territorial-economic organization affected the Istrian region, which was an integral part of the Italian region with the corresponding Venetian district, in whose area a colonnade economic system was formed, which was to a greater extent favorable to the Roman aristocratic rule and military veterans. The military contribution of numerous Illyrian tribes in the Illyrian region in the clash with the militaristic expansionism of the Roman state was almost insignificant, the resistance was so futile that almost no significant battle took place, only the Liburnian tribe managed to enter into an alliance with the Romans through skillful diplomacy, at the same time freeing itself from the influence of the Celtic-Illyrian confederation, and waging war with the Delmatians.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Beitrag bietet Erst-sowie Neueditionen von 22 Inschriften aus Antiocheia ad Pisidiam und Umgebung. Dabei handelt es sich um Texte, die mit Bauwerken, Ehrungen, Weihungen sowie Grabmonumenten in Zusammenhang stehen. Zeitlich sind die Inschriften entweder der Kaiserzeit oder der frühbyzantinischen Epoche zuzuordnen. Als Grundlagen der Editionen dienten Aufzeichnungen, Notizen und Abbildungen von Maurice A. Byrne, die sich heute am Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents in Oxford befinden. Die Materialien dieses Archivs wurden mit Fotos von Stephen Mitchell sowie Kopien von Inschriften am British Institute at Ankara kombiniert. Im Anhang finden sich Kommentare zu zwei Monumenten, die jüngst in Zusammenhang mit den Xenoi Tekmoreioi publiziert wurden. SCHLÜSSELWÖRTER: Antiocheia ad Pisidiam, Yalvaç, Pisidien, Asia Minor, colonia Romana, Xenoi Tekmoreioi, kaiserzeitliche und frühbyzantinische Epigraphik. Antiocheia ad Pisidiam ist zweifellos den bedeutendsten Städten des kaiserzeitlichen Kleinasien zuzurechnen. Dies ist einerseits ihrer besonderen Lage an der Via Sebaste geschuldet, die Antiocheia zu einem Verkehrsknotenpunkt im südlichen Anatolien werden ließ. Andererseits avancierte die Stadt auf Grund ihrer Institutionalisierung als colonia zu einem Stützpunkt der römischen Herrschaft im Süden der Provinz Galatia sowie in der Spätantike zum Hauptort der neu geschaffenen Provinz Pisidia. Zudem lag Antiocheia in unmittelbarer Nähe von überregionalen Kultstätten: sowohl das Heiligtum für Mên am Berg Karakuyu als auch der Zentralort der Xenoi Tekmoreioi in der Chora der Kolonie, aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach im oder beim heutigen Dorf Sağır, sorgten alljährlich für viele Besucher*innen nicht nur der Kultplätze, sondern wohl auch der Stadt. 1

A famous dossier of inscriptions discovered within the territory of the Roman province of Asia provides evidence for the repeated abuse of power by Roman soldiers against civilians in the countryside during the later second and the first half of the 3rd century AD. Various interpretations of these texts, which contain petitions of local communities and responses by imperial authorities, have been offered. Thus, they have often been understood as expressions of a condition of military anarchy, which was thought to have been characteristic of the 3rd century crisis throughout the Empire. More recently, these texts have been described as mere products of a regional epigraphic habit in this period, and therefore irrelevant to the historical development of the phenomena they deplore. This entry presents a fragmentary Greek inscription on a marble statue base discovered in 2011 at Laodicea on the Lycos (a few km north of modern Denizli, Turkey) and published for the first time in Şimşek, Guizzi, Nocita 2022. The surviving text records a dedication by the boulè and the dêmos of Laodicea to an anonymous praetorian prefect. The upper portion of the base – including the honorand's name – has been lost. On the basis of the surviving letters, the first editor tentatively identified the prefect with Pomponius Ianuarianus, an official active under Diocletian. However, there is no evidence Ianuarianus ever held the praetorian prefecture. In this paper, a new reading of the partially legible first line of the inscription is proposed, suggesting that what was taken as part of a name ending in -onius may instead refer to the rank of the honorand.

This entry presents a fragmentary Latin inscription on a limestone statue base found in Beirut during 1960s excavations, and published by J. Aliquot in 2019 and 2023 (as IGLS VIII/1, 93). The partially legible text records a dedication to an unnamed ruler by an anonymous official of clarissimus rank, who had held the offices of ordinary consul, praetorian prefect, and comes of the East, Egypt and Mesopotamia. The combination and sequence of these offices, together with the linguistic evidence from the city, suggest a chronology around 340-350 AD and the identification of the anonymous official as either Septimius Acindynus or, more likely, Domitius Leontius.

A hitherto unpublished legal document from Northern Africa regarding the tutorship case of Iulius Maianus from the Goretianos estate (provincia Byzacena) contains a copy of an older document from AD 282, which mentions the governor of Numidia, Flavius Aelius Victorinus. Previously, the date of his governorship was uncertain. Now it is possible to fix it to AD 282. It is an important contribution to the fasti of Numidia in the second half of the third and the beginning of the fourth centuries AD.

The Troesmis Research Project (2010-2024) is a Romanian-Austrian collaboration focused on the Roman and Byzantine site of Troesmis located on the Lower Danube. Extensive interdisciplinary research was conducted, including remote sensing, field surveys, and geophysical prospection, thus employing non-invasive methods. Key objectives included reconstructing the historical development of the military camp and civilian settlements, mapping infrastructure like aqueducts and roads, and creating a comprehensive archaeological dataset of an ancient microregion. Recent surveys (2023-2024) employed advanced geophysical techniques, notably motorised magnetometry and ground-penetrating radar, allowing detailed mapping of the legionary camp and adjacent civilian areas. The surveys revealed the layout of Troesmis' fortress, streets, and public buildings, while providing new data indicating that the epigraphically attested municipium developed outside the former camp after the departure of legio V Macedonica in the last decades of the 2 nd century AD. Noteworthy results include the identification of residential zones, the extensive road network, burial grounds, and the shift from Roman military to Byzantine settlement patterns. Marble artefact analysis and provenance studies revealed a mix of local and imported materials, particularly Prokonnesian marble, used in architectural elements, various interior decorations and sculptures, and highlighting trade networks. For the first time in the region, the use of greco scritto marble (imported from the Ephesos area) for wall revetments and flooring is identified for the 2 nd-3 rd centuries AD.

From the late second century AD, archaeological and epigraphic evidence attests to a major architectural complex within the canabae legionis at Apulum, likely the praetorium consularis, residence and headquarters of the Roman provincial governor in Dacia. Despite excavation challenges due to the modern city of Alba Iulia, a variety of decorative materials have been recovered - marble flooring and wall revetments, mosaics, stucco, and terracotta pavements - many from secondary contexts and previously understudied. This project reexamines these fragments, drawing on material from 19th-century digs, recent rescue excavations, and earlier research. Emphasis is placed on analyzing the technical and material aspects of interior decoration, particularly the sourcing and use of both local and imported marble categories. The presence of high quality finishes and evidence of skilled workmanship, including input from northern Italy and Asia Minor, points to a well-developed decorative program. Ultimately, the study of interior decoration at the praetorium consularis not only advances our understanding of the complex’s spatial organization and chronological development, but also contributes to wider inquiries into the economic, cultural, and administrative structures of Roman Dacia.

This paper examines the role of architectural spaces in political self-representation and diplomacy in North Africa between the 3rd and 1st centuries BCE. Focusing on Numidian and Mauretanian monarchies, it highlights how palatial centers such as Siga and Cirta functioned as hubs of diplomatic activity, while monumental funerary structures like the Medracen and the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania projected dynastic legitimacy. These sites combined indigenous, Punic, and Hellenistic elements to construct symbolic landscapes of power. Ultimately, the study argues that architecture played a central role in reinforcing authority and shaping diplomatic interactions in the pre-Roman Maghreb.

La cité béotienne d' Akraiphia, située sur la berge orientale de l'ancien lac Kopaïs, présente tous les traits de ce que l'historien allemand Eberhard Ruschenbusch nommait une Normalpolis 1 : il s'agit d'une entité dotée d'un territoire agricole et d'un petit centre urbain qui en font un gros village à l'image d'un grand nombre de poleis classiques et hellénistiques. Dans le cas d' Akraiphia, s'y ajoutent deux spécificités, qui rompent avec cette normalité : la chôra abritait un sanctuaire d' Apollon Ptoios, qui eut une vocation au moins pambéotienne, voire internationale 2 ; la cité faisait partie d'une confédération, dont la structure la mieux connue et la plus développée fut celle de l'époque hellénistique. Mais ce koinon béotien finit par être dissous de manière brutale en 171 a.C. par les Romains 3 . La chance de cette cité fut d'avoir été fouillée tôt et de manière répétée à partir de la fin du xix e siècle et d'avoir, de ce fait, livré un nombre non négligeable d'inscriptions, au moins 270 4 . Ce corpus, certes moins abondant que celui d'autres cités, comme Thespies ou Tanagra, présente néanmoins l'avantage d'être varié et comprend, en particulier, des documents officiels d'époque hellénistique, tels les décrets ou les catalogues militaires, qui permettent à l'historien de mener, autant que faire se peut pour qui ne dispose pas du riche matériel athénien, une analyse à la fois chronologique et prosopographique 5 : il s'agit là d'un laboratoire intéressant pour comprendre les ressorts et développements d'une société civique ordinaire notamment à la basse époque hellénistique, alors même que l'armature fédérale a été rompue. Je voudrais saisir l'occasion qui m'est ici offerte pour revenir sur une question controversée : celle de la chronologie des inscriptions du ii e s. a.C. avec la mention des synedria locaux. * Avec Catherine Grandjean, dédicataire de ce volume, nous avons beaucoup partagé : koina, chronologie, Béotie, mais aussi bien des fous rires ! El gobierno de C. Verres en Sicilia (73-71 a.C.), según el testimonio de Cicerón en In Verrem, representa un caso extremo de abuso del poder romano en el ámbito provincial. Este ejercicio del imperium se habría caracterizado por una violencia institucional sistemática, ejercida sin distinción de estatus jurídico sobre comunidades e individuos, vulnerando los derechos personales y procesales tanto de peregrinos como de ciudadanos romanos. Este estudio propone una reevaluación histórica de dicha violencia, contextualizándola en el marco de la crisis institucional que atravesaba la República romana en la década de los 70 a.C., marcada por una intensa conflictividad sociopolítica y militar en Italia y algunas provincias. Se analiza, en particular, la situación cívica de las poblaciones de Sicilia tras la aprobación de la lex Iulia de civitate y la lex Plautia Papiria (90-89 a.C.), así como el impacto en la isla del bellum sociale, el bellum civile, el bellum Spartacium y la piratería. El objetivo es establecer premisas iniciales que permitan una relectura del gobierno de Verres, desligada de las estrategias discursivas y recursos retóricos de Cicerón, y enfocada en comprender su actuación dentro de una aplicación estricta del imperium militiae en un contexto de extremo peligro para la República romana.

Nuestras vidas se desarrollan en escenarios que nos transcienden y en circunstancias que no elegimos. Factores que van de lo más externo a lo más íntimo (nuestro entorno medioambiental, nuestro contexto social o nuestro universo emotivo-simbólico, por ejemplo), que afectan decisivamente a la biografía que vamos construyendo. Son circunstancias que influyen en nuestro estar en el mundo y que nos revelan la condición que hace posible todas nuestras experiencias: ser vulnerables (Seguró Mendlewicz 2021: 13) Esta obra colectiva reúne una serie de contribuciones elaboradas en el marco del proyecto VIPMA. Vulnerabilidad intrafamiliar y política del mundo antiguo (PID 2020-116349GB-100), financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación del Gobierno de España y dirigido por las doctoras Susana Reboreda Morillo y Rosa María Cid López, de las universidades de Vigo y Oviedo, respectivamente. En un trabajo reciente, Ana Iriarte (2025: 279-281) alude a la problemática que plantea la aplicación del concepto de vulnerabilidad para el período antiguo, una cuestión ampliamente debatida y reflexionada en el transcurso del citado proyecto. De origen indoeuropeo, a partir de la raíz vul-y pese a la existencia del adjetivo latino vulnerabilis, el significado actual del término "vulnerabilidad" no existía en el periodo grecolatino. El vocablo más cercano sería vulnus, cuyo sentido más estricto remite a la "herida" física o corporal y, por extensión, al instrumento con el que se inflige el daño. No obstante, gracias a la literatura y, en especial, a la poesía, es posible comprobar la evolución experimentada por el concepto, que se extenderá a una herida de carácter emocional (vulnere amoris o vulnera vitae) 2 . En el pensamiento filosófico la vulnerabilidad se ha abordado desde dos ópticas o postulados. Por un lado, tenemos la denominada "ontológica" o de perfil "antropológico", que sería la condición compartida por todos los seres humanos susceptibles de ser dañados y en última instancia de perder la vida, mientras que, la segunda opción, incide más en el aspecto "social" o "situacional". Esta última corriente sería aquella que presta especialmente atención a situaciones concretas que conducen a la exacerbación de la vulnerabilidad compartida u ontológica. En las sociedades antiguas, donde los Estados carecían de la conciencia social o de los mecanismos institucionales necesarios para mitigar este tipo de problemáticas, la pertenencia étnica, el género o la edad fueron factores que determinaron el "grado de vulnerabilidad" de distintos individuos, afectando especialmente a colectivos como mujeres, infantes o personas ancianas, que eran más propensas a vivir situaciones de exclusión social, precariedad y desamparo (Liedo 2021: 245-246; Fernández Prieto e Iriarte 2024: 19). No obstante, también pudieron darse situaciones concretas que también fueron determinantes que propiciaron momentos de sufrimiento, más allá de las circunstancias económicas o de género, como las crisis pedro david conesa navarro, susana reboreda morillo, josé miguel noguera celdrán relegada a una posición de inferioridad, lo que pone de manifiesto el fracaso de la política romana en lo relativo a la integración de los individuos. El cuarto bloque agrupa cuatro capítulos dedicados a la familia, a las enfermedades y a las etapas vitales del ser humano. La contribución de Francesca Reduzzi Merola: "La famiglia come luogo della vulnerabilità", examina contextos de vulnerabilidad dentro de la familia romana, con especial atención a dos constituciones imperiales pertenecientes a momentos distintos y vinculadas por la cuestión del matrimonio entre una mujer ingenua y un liberto y por las repercusiones jurídicas tanto en los cónyuges como en su descendencia. El trabajo de Borja Méndez Santiago: "La violencia contra las personas mayores en la Antigüedad. Un acercamiento multidisciplinar", aborda la violencia ejercida contra las personas mayores percibidas como una carga familiar a partir del registro literario, epigráfico, iconográfico y arqueológico, abarcando un amplio marco cronológico y geográfico. El capítulo de María Secades Fonseca, "La ilusión de la invulnerabilidad. Poder, justicia y daño en las Georgias de Platón", interpreta la vulnerabilidad en Gorgias desde la perspectiva ontológica humana, distinguiendo entre daño físico y daño moral. Platón considera este último más grave al comprometer la integridad del alma, transformando al ser herido en un problema filosófico central. El capítulo de Gonzalo Matilla Séiquer: "La enfermedad como vulnerabilidad: el caso de los balnearios romanos", analiza el deseo del ser humano de curarse y enfrentarse a la enfermedad, a través de los balnearios gracias a las propiedades medicinales de sus aguas, revisando si este recurso estaba al alcance de todas las personas. El último bloque de la monografía está compuesto por cinco aportaciones dedicadas a analizar las diferencias de vulnerabilidad entre las personas determinadas por su posición social y jurídica. Claudia Valeria Alonso Moreno: "Vulnerabilidad y dependencia en la Grecia del Bronce final: el trabajo femenino e infantil en los talleres textiles y el servicio doméstico en el Estado micénico de Pilo", se centra en el Bronce Final en el Estado palacial de Pilo, donde la mano de obra era un recurso fundamental controlado por la administración. Las mujeres trabajadoras y sus hijos, documentados en las series Aa y Ab, formaban parte de los sectores más vulnerables de la sociedad, aunque no fueran consideradas esclavas. Esta vulnerabilidad, fomentada por el propio Estado, aseguraba una fuerza de trabajo estable. También se indagan los mecanismos y espacios en los que se desarrollaba este tipo de actividades. Francesca Cenerini: "Le stanze del potere e la violenza letale sulle Augustae: da Poppea Sabina a Faustina Minore", analiza la vulnerabilidad de ciertas mujeres de la corte imperial romana, incluso en espacios que deberían ofrecerles protección. Estudia los casos de Poppea Sabina, Julia hija de Tito y Faustina la Menor, destacando una vulnerabilidad ligada al embarazo y al desgaste físico provocado por maternidades repetidas y constantes desplazamientos. Las tres últimas aportaciones son de Jacobo Rodríguez Garrido: "Lo que no se nombre no existe: la invisibilización de la prostitución masculina en la documentación legal romana"; Maria Vittoria Bramante: "Qui in scaenam prodierit nello spazio del diritto: dall'infamia al divieto di rappresentazione" y José Javier Martínez García: "Mujeres vulnerables durante los primeros siglos del cristianismo: el ordo viduarum y el ordo virginum y su reflejo en Oxirrinco (Egipto)". Rodríguez Garrido se centra en la prostitución a través del análisis de las fuentes jurídicas romanas, especialmente las referidas al componente servil. El empleo de un lenguaje "feminizado" parece que no da cabida a la prostitución masculina. No obstante, a partir de un recorrido diacrónico que abarca desde los primeros siglos de la Antigüedad hasta época tardía, se aprecia cómo los varones, al igual que las mujeres, también ejercieron la prostitución. Bramante estudia la situación legal de los actores en Roma, limitada hasta las reformas de Justiniano, y subraya que, pese a las restricciones jurídicas, eran muy valorados en la vida cotidiana y en los espectáculos. Martínez García se circunscribe al estudio de la ciudad egipcia de Oxirrinco y analiza las condiciones de vida de las viudas y las vírgenes en época tardía. Estas mujeres, a pesar de desempeñar funciones como guías espirituales y de ejercer una notable influencia social, veían su margen de actuación limitado por dinámicas de marginación y subordinación al clero masculino. No obstante, dichas restricciones no les impidieron optimizar los recursos disponibles para desarrollarse tanto en el ámbito social como en el religioso. En definitiva, los capítulos de este volumen avalan la hipótesis de que la vulnerabilidad en la Antigüedad fue un fenómeno multidimensional, ligado a factores de género, edad, estatus social, condición jurídica, espacio y contextos culturales o religiosos. También se demuestra cómo mujeres, niños, ancianos y otros grupos introducción. una vulnerabilidad diversa en la antigüedad 11 podían encontrarse en situaciones de fragilidad física, social o legal, incluso en entornos que deberían ofrecer protección, como la corte imperial, el hogar o los espacios religiosos. La vulnerabilidad se manifiesta tanto en la cotidiano (trabajo, familia, parto, enfermedad), como en lo simbólico o jurídico (leyes, relegaciones, marginalización social), y estaba condicionada por relaciones de poder, dependencia y control institucional. Asimismo, los estudios concluyen que, pese a estas limitaciones, existían estrategias de participación cívica y mecanismos de compensación que permitían cierta capacidad de acción y resistencia, revelando una tensión constante entre subordinación y autonomía en distintos contextos históricos. It presents the results of research on literary and epigraphic sources as well as archaeological material. The articles in the first part address the beginnings of the Roman period and the Principate, and those of the second part offer new insights into the Late Roman period, Late Antiquity, and the transition to the Early Middle Ages. Together, they add new insights to a field of research whose contours were first outlined by Jaroslav Šašel. We hope that this book will encourage further research on one of the most pivotal regions of the Roman Empire: at the crossroads between Italy and the Balkan Peninsula, between the Mediterranean and Central Europe. This study examines Suetonius’ Lives of the XII Caesars from the viewpoint of the Julio-Claudians’ use of Greek and Latin. The goal is to highlight the emperors’ role in the developments of bilingual practices in Roman society, at a time of cultural and political transformation. Although educated in Greek language, Augustus mostly expressed himself in Latin in public. Tiberius kept separate uses for each language, stressing the prevalence of Latin in official contexts, such as in the Senate assemblies. Claudius used Greek more openly in official communication, suggesting a wider acceptance by the Roman people. By contrast, Nero was criticised for his admiration of Greek culture. This paper traces the progression of Greek language from a restricted and targeted use to an integrated and institutionalised use, examining the emperors’ roles as both preservers of Roman identity and cultural innovators. Finally, it contributes to our understanding of the complex dynamics between language and power in the early Roman Empire.

RESUMEN: Los decuriones, que, jerárquicamente, estaban situados por encima de la tropa y justo por debajo de los oficiales ecuestres, apenas han sido objeto de estudios específicos por su escasa presencia en las fuentes. Como resultado, existen carencias en múltiples campos, incluidos los relacionados con el alcance de sus funciones y su capacidad para asumir mandos extraordinarios. Para abordar estas cuestiones se ha hecho un uso combinado de la epigrafía de las Mauretaniae, donde no hubo una guarnición legionaria, y del Africa Proconsularis-Numidia, donde los auxilia coexistieron con la legio III Augusta. El resultado es un rico marco geográfico que, en primer lugar, permite profundizar en cómo estos suboficiales contribuían al control y la mejora de distintos puntos del limes. Of particular interest is a provision of the Theodosian Code, 7.8.9, which attests to the confiscation and exploitation of certain urban properties.
This paper aims to investigate the rationale behind this provision in relation to other similar provisions, who the conductores mentioned in the provision were, and what the underlying dynamics of this locatio-conductio were.

Rad se bavi procesom kristijanizacije na prostoru koji danas obuhvata država Bosna i Hercegovina, s tim da je veći naglasak na prostoru koji je bio sastavni dio nekadašnje rimske provincije Dalmacije. U tekstu se na temelju pisanog i arheološkog materijala analizira širenje kršćanstva na dotičnom prostoru, od njegovih samih početaka u 1. stoljeću n. e. pa sve do završetka antičkog perioda. Kritikom pisanih izvora i analizom arheoloških nalaza cilj je predstaviti širu sliku ovog procesa, ustanoviti pravac njegovog djelovanja te razjasniti uzročno-posljedičnu vezu između različitih aspekata procesa kristijanizacije.

The present paper analyses a large piece of mail armour found during archaeological
excavations in Cluj‑Napoca, no. 1 Victor Deleu Street. In the course of this research, important
traces of the ancient Roman town of Napoca came to light. The mail shirt may belong to the latest
phases of Roman habitation, but, in the absence of an undisturbed find context, a later date cannot
be excluded. The artefact was subjected to a series of detailed investigations, including X‑ray and CT
scan. The poor state of preservation, however, means that many uncertainties still remain. After the
technical description, other issues, such as deposition and possible dating, are addressed. Assuming
a Roman date for the mail, the presence of a military item in a civilian context is further discussed.
