The interpretation and representation of variation has long been (in the print paradigm) and stil... more The interpretation and representation of variation has long been (in the print paradigm) and still remains (in our hybrid culture) a desideratum for many of the approaches of text as a process. In this paper we situate the ‘analytical method’ for interpreting and representing textual fluidity and variation within the field of other western traditions that study change in modern literary writing. The ‘analytical method’ is part of a continuum of theories and practices developed in order to face the editing challenges posed by the Greek poet Dionysios Solomòs’ unfinished works. The method is particularly interesting as an autonomous parallel to other approaches that aim at the representation of textual variation. Although departing from a single case study (that of Solomòs), it proceeds to the development of a series of sophisticated tools that attempt to present change, both on the micro- as well as on the macro-genetic level. The tools and theoretical consequences of the ‘analytical method’ put to the test not only the traditional concepts of text/work, variant/version, but also the mere conventions of the print medium.

The intersection between archive theory and digital technologies has generated more than technica... more The intersection between archive theory and digital technologies has generated more than technical innovations—it has challenged our assumptions about what archives are and do. Projects such as The Walt Whitman Archive, The Shelley-Godwin Archive, the Samuel Beckett Digital Manuscript Project, and the Digitale Faustedition demonstrate a new understanding of the archive's role in literary studies. These initiatives raise a critical question: Should we understand digital archives as reproductions of physical collections, or as entities with their own distinct logic? This paper attempts to answer this question, based on the experience gained from the project Solomos’ Digital Archive. Solomos' holographs are the most authoritative source for his incomplete works. Responding to one of the most important challenges of Modern Greek Philology, Linos Politis proposed ―and in 1964 carried out― the photographic reproduction and diplomatic transcription of the manuscripts. Today, some sixty years later, the digital edition being implemented at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is part of that longstanding editing tradition and at the same time follows contemporary developments in the field of digital scholarly editions. We discuss the challenges posed by the very concept of the literary archive in the digital condition, which often approximates that of an edition, as it consists not only of digital surrogates and their metadata but also of encoded transcriptions based on editorial decisions (according to the TEI standard); the work of encoding and annotating the transcribed text is what allows for multiple forms of textual representation (diplomatic, critical, genetic, reading) and for textual analysis via methods of distant reading.

Η ψηφιακή συνθήκη έχει αλλάξει τον χαρακτήρα των κειμενικών σπουδών και έχει επηρεάσει τη μέθοδο ... more Η ψηφιακή συνθήκη έχει αλλάξει τον χαρακτήρα των κειμενικών σπουδών και έχει επηρεάσει τη μέθοδο της εκδοτικής εργασίας αλλά και τα ερευνητικά ερωτήματα που την διέπουν. Ο συλλογικός τόμος Ψηφιακές Φιλολογικές Εκδόσεις: Θεωρίες και Πρακτικές —που επιμελούνται οι Matthew James Driscoll & Elena Pierazzo— αφορά το επιστημονικό πεδίο της «εκδοτικής των κειμένων» και ειδικότερα τις «ψηφιακές φιλολογικές εκδόσεις», δηλαδή τις ψηφιακές εκδόσεις ιστορικών πηγών και τεκμηρίων που βασίζονται σε ενδελεχή κριτική και ανάλυση του κειμένου. Συγκεντρώνοντας το έργο καθιερωμένων και νέων ερευνητών, ο συλλογικός τόμος προσφέρει έναν επίκαιρο προβληματισμό σχετικά με τις πρακτικές που εμπλέκονται στην παραγωγή, στην επιμέλεια και στην ανάγνωση ψηφιακών φιλολογικών εκδόσεων και με τις θεωρίες που τις υποστηρίζουν. Ο τόμος αποτελείται από δύο μέρη, τα οποία, όπως προαναγγέλλεται στον τίτλο, αντίστοιχα εστιάζονται στη Θεωρία και στην Πράξη των ψηφιακών φιλολογικών εκδόσεων. Τα βασικά θεωρητικά θέματα που συζητούνται είναι: ο ορισμός των ψηφιακών φιλολογικών εκδόσεων, οι αλλαγές που έχουν γίνει κατά το πέρασμα από το έντυπο στο ψηφιακό και οι πρακτικές που εμπλέκονται στην παραγωγή, έκδοση και ανάγνωση των ψηφιακών φιλολογικών εκδόσεων. Όσον αφορά την πράξη, αναλύονται συγκεκριμένες περιπτώσεις ψηφιακών εκδοτικών εγχειρημάτων, καθώς και η διαχείριση ζητημάτων, όπως είναι η ανάγκη κωδικοποίησης του κριτικού υπομνήματος ή εμπλουτισμού των δυνατοτήτων επισημείωσης σωμάτων αλληλογραφίας. Ο συγκεκριμένος πολυσυλλεκτικός τόμος αποτελεί απαραίτητο ανάγνωσμα για αυτούς/-ές που ενδιαφέρονται για το μέλλον των κειμενικών σπουδών και των ψηφιακών ανθρωπιστικών επιστημών.
