For the last few years, the advice for early-stage founders was to build on closed models. That's not really true anymore, I just met 4 founders who own theirs. Open models have gotten so good (welcome Kimi K3!) that founders are now thinking about them from day one. They take an open model, train it on their own data, and it gets far better at their specific job than a general model built to handle everything for everyone would. Which now makes this a product decision. The model becomes part of the reason their product is difficult for anyone else to copy. Every day someone uses it, it gets a little better at its job - and nobody else can recreate that version. On Tuesday, August 4th, Arjun Karanam (co-founder of Trajectory), Jack O'Brien (co-founder of Subconscious), Saad Jamal(Co-founder of Antigen), and Ken Acquah (co-founder of Kaizen) are all demoing at Baseten HQ next week. They'll be breaking down: - Why they chose to own their models. - How they actually built their inference stack. - What made it hard, and what they'd do differently. If you're an engineer or a technical founder making this decision right now, this is where you want to be. Space is limited, and registration needs approval, so sign up soon!
