The timing was complicated, the cost was high, and doing it during a global health crisis added a layer of absurdity that no Ivy League prestige could offset. But I needed a different kind of rigour, and Columbia offered exactly that.

In April 2025, the President of the Society rectified the situation and I was given charge of the Communications portfolio, an area I cared about deeply and felt genuinely equipped to lead.

A few months in, I stepped down in December 2025. Not because the work was not meaningful, but because it demanded a level of time and commitment that a pro bono role, layered on top of a full-time job and a life beyond work, simply could not sustainably absorb. ISOCARP needed someone who could commit fully to strengthening its foundations with communications at the core. That person needed to be available in ways I could not be at that point in my life.
Knowing when to step back is its own kind of contribution. I hope the Society finds the leadership it deserves. -

As a Local Pathways Fellow, I partnered with 45+ administrators to design and launch a sustainability project, building the strategy, framework, and metrics, and making the case to leadership until they said yes.

SDSN Youth, launched by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, is one of the world's largest networks of young leaders working towards the SDGs. As a Local Pathways Fellow, I partnered with 45+ administrators to design and launch a sustainability project, building the strategy, framework, and metrics, and making the case to leadership until they said yes.
The highlight nobody expects: I co-led a project called PoopIT at the UNLEASH Innovation Lab in China. Yes, real name. A credit-based technology solution promoting behavioural change around open defecation in India while creating micro-market opportunities for FMCG products.
It led to a Change.org campaign that, after more iterations than I care to count, gathered 200,000 signatures worldwide. In October 2019, it reached the Chief Minister of Delhi, resulting in a quiet but meaningful edit to sanitation policy: toilet audits for the urban poor would now assess function, not just numbers. By November, it was national policy. Credit was never given. That is the way of the world.
UNLEASH later nominated me for the Gates Foundation Global Goalkeepers Award. I did not win. The nomination mattered less than the fact that a policy actually changed.

One of the more surreal moments of my career: being told I had been selected as the Shardashish Scholar from a pool of over 1,400 applicants, in the middle of a global pandemic, for a programme I had applied to partly because I genuinely did not expect to get it.
The Shardashish Fellowship (USD 50,000) is awarded to one scholar per cohort committed to pushing boundaries and enabling others. The Goalkeepers Award, led by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, recognises individuals accelerating progress towards the SDGs through data, storytelling, and accountability.
I did not win. The policy changed anyway. That, in the end, was the point.
