PCMA also establishes links among other university research and teaching efforts relevant to conflict management alternatives, and maintains liaison and collaboration with similar efforts in other universities and Practitioner agencies. The Program staffers own work focuses explicitly on the relationship between social justice and social conflict, specifically: (a) the use of innovative settlement procedures and roles for disputants and third parties; (b) the institutionalization of innovative mechanisms and the adoption of organizational and community structures that permanently alter the way conflicts are managed; and. (c) the fundamental differences and inequalities between parties that often create conflict and threaten its stable resolution. We examine these issues primarily in united Statesf settings, in conflicts arising within and between families, organizations and communities, and between different racial, gender, and economic constituencies. These specific efforts are supported by a variety of research and action grants/contracts with governmental agencies, foundations, and private and public organizations/agencies.

The substantial intellectual and institutional resources of Americas research universities are not readily accessible to the community. This article analyzes several elements in redefining service as scholarship, identifies obstacles to the process, and suggests ways of overcoming them.

But because mass media, social science, and professional practice tend to emphasize the deficiencies and disengagement of young people, there is need for more knowledge of their resources and roles as active participants in the policy process. This paper examines the San Francisco Youth Commission as an example of youth participation, including its origins, objectives, activities, facilitating and limiting forces, multilevel effects, and lessons learned from empirically-based practice. The authors-a university professor, commission director, and youth leader-argue that more knowledge of youth participation as a subject of study will contribute to its growth as a field of practice.

The paper identifies issues arising when they are trying to find their way, such as choosing courses whose content feels foreign, and finding professors who can communicate with them in ways which they understand. It draws upon a review of the literature, and the experiences of the author as a first-generation student and, subsequently, a professor.

These include youth workers and school teachers serving in established institutional roles, and community leaders and neighborhood activists involving youth in new grassroots initiatives. The assumption is that adults can benefit from information and intended to increase inter-generational interaction and mutual support in the common cause of creating change.

“Down Woodward”: A Case Study of Empowering Youth to See and Disrupt Segregation Using Photovoice Methods

The study describes how nine racially and socioeconomically diverse adolescent girls and boys (14–17 years old), from the inner city and suburbs of Detroit, collectively evaluated the cultural, economic, and racial markers of differences found along one of the region’s thoroughfares, Woodward Avenue. The case study used multiple sources of data, collected over 8 years from 2006 to 2014, and a hybrid inductive-deductive analysis approach to examine the process of youth empowerment. The collaborative nature of the photovoice tour helped youth move from critical self-reflection of lived experiences to a collective understanding of segregation and inequality in the metropolitan region. The findings als...

This question is especially important at a time when young people are aware of segregation, and want to communicate and collaborate with others who are different from themselves, across the boundaries that segregate them. Some adults successfully support and engage with youth as adult allies. Many adults are, however, conditioned to position youth in secondary roles, and would benefit from more information about how to successfully engage with young people as allies. This article analyses the efforts of adults like these, drawing upon work in metropolitan Detroit, an area that is among the most segregated in the United States, and that also has small pockets of diversity. It views adults as allies in their broader context, identifies exemplars of practice and discusses the lessons learned from empirically based ...

Strengthening the Scholarship of Engagement
Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement, Dec 12, 2013
Should your college or university have a strategy for strengthening the scholarship of engagement... more Should your college or university have a strategy for strengthening the scholarship of engagement? If so, what should it be? This question arises at a time when levels of civic engagement are inconsistent, when higher education and engaged scholarship have potential for addressing the situation, and when new civic engagement and community learning centers are arising on campuses and, in some cases, on a "road half traveled." This essay addresses this question and some of the issues it raises. It assumes that civic engagement is a core purpose of higher education, and that engaged scholarship can contribute to its answer. It places emphasis on student learning, faculty engagement, and institutional change. These are not the only elements of a larger strategy, but they are among the most important ones.

This article addresses this question, as well as some of the personal, professional and institutional issues that it raises for me, as a community worker and university professor. It draws upon a program in a metropolitan area that is simultaneously segregated and diverse, and examines ways of defining the problem, gathering the information and using the results – all the while working with community partners, without whom the work would not be.Keywords: Research, community-building, university-community collaboration
